New MacBook: Education Pricing or Tax-Deduct as Work-Related Device?

Hi guys, I'm getting a new MacBook M2 ($1649) for my sibling.

Just wondering if it's worth getting it from AOC with student discount ($1582), or just buy it under my name and deduct it from my taxable income? I'm earning around $110k.

I wonder if there's another way to save?

Thanks

    Why can’t you do both?

      This is the way

What would the ATO care if they saw an invoice with educational pricing discount on it. They'll never ask to see the invoice anyway, the cost to audit you that thoroughly would probably be just as much as you owe in taxes that year, which their supercomputer AI deep state spy software already knows anyway.

The ATO monitors these chats so you screwed now

    Only 8GB?

    M2 MacBook

Unfortunately if you hadn't specified the price, "M2 MacBook" wouldn't help us figure out which device you're talking about when all of these are M2 Macbooks 😅:

    • M2 MacBook Air 13"
    • M2 MacBook Air 15"
    • M2 MacBook Pro 13"
    • M2 MacBook Pro 14"
    • M2 MacBook Pro 16"

The M2 Pro line has just been replaced by the M3 line few days ago. Unless you've already decided on the Air 13", I'd consider keeping an eye on Pro 13" clearance sales.

  • Someone correct me if I am wrong as I havent bought a Macbook in 6 years but the previous best deal was to get a grey import from Kogan. MacBooks have global warranty so its the same as buying here cheaper.

You're living in the past man. Those sweet $1k and under Macbook Air deals are lost in the mists of OzBargain time. Plus you won't get an extra year or more ACL if you buy a grey market one.

      • Thats a shame. The fabled 20% off Ebay + Kogan grey import was the best.
