Whats the connectivity like with this or others. Is there any delay or lagg or disconnects while using this.

    • +7

My car has genuine wireless CarPlay, it also disconnects and lags when making call. So I’m using wired..

    • I have a Motorola wireless Android Auto adaptor. It also has dropouts and lag. Same with my wife's Pioneer head unit, and a relative's Skoda with built-in wireless.

It's just Android Auto that's crap. I think it's because it uses a really wide 5GHz channel that has way more theoretical bandwidth than it ever needs, but which makes it extremely susceptible to interference. For me, being within 150 metres of any mobile phone tower causes a dropout.

I'll wait for the day I upgrade my phone to a wireless charging one, and techno of these wireless android auto (AA) adapter's support wireless charging. For now I'm happy with easily pluging in the phone, knowing it's reliable AA connectivity and charging without battery draining for WiFi connectivity.

Thanks, you talked me out of buying this. Now, can you talk me out of buying everything else on OzBargain, please?

      • :D

I have an AA Wireless one of these (was popular when this tech was new) and it's great. It has flaws, I'm normally half way down the street by the time it's connected, but I can just hop in the car and go. If I'm going on a long drive I might unplug the wireless adapter and plug my phone in, it's just a matter of taking the cable from the little box and putting it in my phone, but I'm more often on short trips and would rather leave my phone in my pocket.

    • +5

I never liked wireless charging in a car. If you are nagivating using google maps most phones will just overheat and stop charging.

      • Really? good to know!! Now it's not a factor to upgrade the phone. Can happily stick to good ol tech!

        • -3

lies, ive been using qi charging in my car even before apple started using it on their phones, long road trips have never been an issue.

the only problem with heat ive ever run across is those ring stickers coming undone and dropping the phone. which is no longer a problem as you can now buy phone cases with the qi ring built in.

        • Depending on where the phone lies, on my Atto 3 unfortunately the charger is in full sun and on sunny day yes my Pixel 7 Pro will stop charging. On not so sunny day it's fine.

      • +1

Try setting your map app to dark or nightmode, this may help lower the power usage on your screen and lower the heat.

      • On my car, its enough to keep the phone from losing charge, im happy with that

      • No issues for me but I use a vent mount holder with wireless charging so I guess the AC helps to cool it.

    Gold.

Thanks OP, grabbed one, happy to risk at this price

all of them delay, so good for music and maps calls hopeless. all the same chipset

I can vouch for the AA version of this actually works really well.

  • I have a Mazda CX-9 2016 which does not have Apple CarPlay, but has the original Mazda Connect Infotainment System which has touch screen features. I can connect my iPhone to this system by a wired connection and a wireless connection.

Will this convert my Mazda Connect Infotainment System into CarPlay, or is this only to switch existing wired CarPlay to wireless CarPlay?

    • +12

No it’s an adaptor so it won’t work if your car doesn’t have wired CarPlay by default

    • +7

You can, however, buy something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001447097099.html and upgrade the infotainment system to have Carplay. Took me a few hours (software updates take a while) and then get the wireless adapter.

        Awesome. Thanks ozvictor and Cachew.

        • I have a 2017 cx5, (the newer shape with the dash top mounted stereo) and I bought one of these. But I also had to update the software on the stereo which wasn't easy, and the files are hard to find on the internet because Mazda basically hates people doing this. Mazda charges around 550 to add the module and update the software last time I checked.

      • Yeah I've done this too, no issue.

      • is there something to enable andriod auto on a Holden VF?

    • +2

Note, your Mazda can get Carplay / AA retrofitted by Mazda for like 500 bucks, albeit it's still wired, but the interface is pretty neat (albeit no touchscreen for AA whatsoever).

      • +2

You’re paying Mazda $500 for the $83 AliExpress link. It’s quite easy to fit, just have to route a few wires and swap the usb unit.

From memory your have to update the radio via a USB BEFORE you install the new parts

        • The tricky part was obtaining a copy of the latest firmware!

          • +2

@Underlord: I have a copy and I could upload if anyone needs it. If anyone has any suggestions where to upload it I cam probably do that.

      • 604$ for the wired CarPlay from Mazda! Includes the software upgrade and a lifetime warranty as per my local dealership.

  • Has anyone purchased this before? The price is tempting

  • Buy this sort of thing from Amazon. If no good for calls etc due to lag, just send it back.

I bought the CarPlay one recently and have used it for a week now and been using it with a Mazda 3 (2020).
    For anyone considering:
    Good:
    1. Connects to my phone without fail as soon as I turn on my car. There is a “starting screen” that comes up for maybe 3~5 seconds but by the time I’ve come out of park, the “starting screen” is well over.
    2. CarPlay’s control has no delay at all. The only delays I have noticed are when skipping music (1 sec) and when setting a route from my phone (1-2 sec).
    3. The wireless bit is really useful even if it’s the purpose.
    Bad:
    1. If you also connect your phone to your car to charge, the audio output changes from Bluetooth to normal CarPlay. But because the normal CarPlay is taken over by the device, there isn’t any audio. You can fix this by going to your music app and changing the output back to Bluetooth. (Only tested this with Apple Music, not sure for Spotify)
    2. If you have a Bluetooth audio device like a headset and you were using it as you turn on your car, the Bluetooth’s audio output can random swap to your audio device. You can fix this by properly disconnecting or just not having both connected when the car starts.
    3. Calls are slightly delayed so it feels like you’re talking to someone who’s in a different country. Call quality is also degraded but it’s okay.

Overall, I think it’s great and the only annoyances have been related to audio output for me.

    • For calls, does it have it's own mic? Or does it use your phone's mic?

      Sorry for the last question.

      • It uses the car's microphone - like like if you plug it into the cable. Basically this just creates a connection from your phone to the car's USB as if you'd plugged it in.

        • Oh gotcha thanks. Not for me then. I thought this maybe made your dumb car smart. Kind of like a Bluetooth receiver but that was smart and could do calls too.. ah well

I have the Android version. Other than the confusing instructions that contradicts itself because it looks like it's for another product; it's fairly easy to use and I didn't notice anything different compared to wired. Works well.

However the sound quality was noticeable downgraded. That alone made me switch back to wired and put this away in the shame drawer. However I don't believe it's the fault of this product, just the nature of wireless.

    • I can't speak for these things but genuine wireless CarPlay streams lossloss audio @ 24bit/48kHz - So no drop in quality for going wireless.

  • Can you stack this with new user coupons?

  • TL;DR - a similar device (carlinkit) is in my car, unplugged, and I use cable.

Not sure how this compares with carlinkit , and ottobox, those are generally the best (or most popular / well known) ones out there?

Mine seemed decent for calls, no lag. no complaints from other end, and only small lag on GUI input , and I had it set for 1sec of music buffer, worked fine. Didn’t really notice the wireless being much worse

Was sweet not having to plug in a cord too, so phone can just stay in pocket etc

Even still, I’ve almost entirely stopped using it.

Minor thing, but I found the occasional cutouts to music (I assume 5ghz interference, it’s like cd skipping) really jarring.

Secondly , the heat generated in the phone during GPS+streaming music+wireless CarPlay caused overheating. Same deal for phone calls+gps+wirelessCP. Sunlight on phone likely a factor too. Add in charging or even worse , wireless charging and yeh, not ideal.

It’s not over yet tho - I’m going to try a MagSafe holder which covers as little of the phone as possible , like one of those funky circle/ ring ones, and try mount in front of an AC vent. Also I think there was ios16 overheating reports associated with CarPlay in general, which I did notice once or twice with wired - so I’ll try with ios17 again one day

If that test works I’ll try a small MagSafe charger, on a hot day,

All this lengthy rambling probably just reinforces my overall point that wireless is has its own quirks to contend with, YMMV

    • I bought a heymix magsafe charger and it has active cooling, like a little peltier cell and a fan. My phone comes off the charger with an actual cold spot, so it seems to be legit and works well. Only downside is the quality is otherwise average, it will probably last a year or 2 before it falls to bits.

  • I have carlinkit and can vouch for it. Grabbed one when it was listed on sale on OZB.

Disconnection happened only once, but got connected quickly. With wired one, I had an issue of AA not loading sometimes. Its fixed now.

Onlyt annoying things I noticed is that if you try to power the phone when its trying to estbalish connection with headset, it has some problem in connecting. So wait for the wireless AA to establish the connection and then correct the Type-C that is connected to Cig Light and quick charger.

Never used wired one after getting the wireless AA

    • Can voucher for carlinkit, have the dual android auto and apple carplay one. Works very well with minimal to no lag.

  • Hi all,

does anyone know if this is known to work with aftermarket headunits like Sony XAV-AX5000

i have the above Sony unit and its only wired carplay and android auto atm.

    thanks

    • +1

I use a Carlinkit 3.0 with my XA-AX3000 and it works perfectly.

  • I've heard that all these wireless adapters (regardless of brand) drain your car battery when the car is off. Not sure if true for all or just some, just retelling what I have heard.

    • Yup, phone also heats up. I don't think the drain is that bad but comparing to a wired system, your phone isn't charging at the same time.

    • That usually depends on whether your car activates its USB ports when turned off or not. Some do, some don’t.

    • My motorola adapter stays powered on for several minutes after I switch off the car. Not enough to drain the battery.

    • Does your internal USB stay active when you turn the car off? Mine (i30) turns off at about the same time as the internal light goes off after turning the ignition off.

  • Don't create too many new accounts. They'll ban you permanently.

  • Hi, im confused can someone help.
I have mercedes w251 headunit. Inside the glovebox there is a usb that connects to it. Will this device turn the headynit into carplay?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125008542228?chn=ps&_ul=AU&norov…

    • This does not give you CarPlay if you don't already have it in your headunit. It just lets you use wireless Carplay from wired.

  • What do you plug this into on the car? The USB port?

    • yes plug in the usb port in the car

  • Page not found?

  • Good luck if they sent you the wrong item. To resolve it, they will ask you a tracking label between China and Australia, which you will not have (you will only have the tracking label between an Australian company, probably set up by AliExpress, and you). It will not go anywhere.

  • I’m surprised it’s working well on my VW (so far)

  • expired

  • Am returning this item, it just stopped working (does not go beyond the boot screen)

  • +1

I got the Apple Carplay box and have been using it for 2 weeks now with my Tiguan and Forrester and its been flawless!
Really impressive for $30 and delivered in like 8days!

  • Just bought one - not expired

  • I received mine and have been using it for about a week (Android) in my Mazda3. No issues so far, I have been pleasantly surprised at how well it works. Auto reconnects when I switch off the car and restart. I do find that my phone battery runs low quicker, other than that can highly recommend at this price!
