STARTS THURSDAY OCTOBER 4

3 YEAR WARRANTY

Big W are selling the 3tb HP Simple Save hard drives for $189 normally, $169 for a week from 3/10/12

Delivery to 2120 is $8 and the website has a delivery cost calculator.

I have a 2tb version and I like it a lot. I much prefer these HP drives to the Seagate Expansion series (which I rate poorly) and the Western Digital My Book Essential series drives. I much prefer the look of the HP, and I like the blue activity lights which make it easy to tell from a distance when the drive is on and when it is being accessed (unlike the Seagates in particular).

Note that the drive has no on/off switch, which is commmon in many USB drives like this other than the Samsung Story drives…. The drive automatically turns on/off as it senses activity on the USB port…

The 2tb is $109 at Officeworks at the moment…

The 3tb drive is $199 at the Good Guys….

  • Anyone know the model and speed of the drive inside?

    • I have the 2TB, and I'm pretty sure it's a WD

    • WDBW2A0030HBK-AESN - WD30EZRX . Had mine for approx 5months. Its 93% health according to HDSENTINEL, meaning it has developed bad sectors. Oh the drive can get quite hot since it is fanless, when in heavy use.

      • That's not good. I would RMA it immediately. Bad sectors will spread and corrupt the rest of your contents. And it will corrupt them randomly, which means bits of everything will go corrupt.

      • Thats a green 5400RPM Drive, Seagate I got off USB3 3TB amazon uses the 7200RPM drive

  • How do you know about this deal? Will it be in store as well?

    • Yep it will be in store as well (though stock is likely to run out based on previous experience).

I know about it coz I read it in the Big W catalogue that came in the mail today….

Deal is not active until tomorrow so when you look at the web site today it is still $189….

As SFK pointed out the deal actually starts Thursday…

Will try to use OW price beating :)

Not sure OW have the 3tb model - they have the 2tb at $109 which is pretty good…

  • The online catalogue says starts on the 4th

  • thought Dicksmith, JB Hi-Fi & Officework have 3TB(Seagate?/WD?) drive around these price ($169?)

should be a standard price….not much special?

Seagate 3TB is $169 at JB and other places when advertised. Just can't recall if it's USB3 or not.

This one ships free if you don't mind Seagate. Almost the same $/TB like the HP 2TB simplesave for $109 from OW.

        my point is:

this HP 3TB USB3.0 drive for $169 is not really a bargain but more like a "everyday price"

You sure ? I've been looking for a USB3.0, 3TB drive on and off for a few months, since I missed the Bing Lee buffalo deal.

          Links please :)

        • Depends on how you look at it. If the drive really is a WD, their own branded models go for ~$225 in stores (external). The Seagate, though, goes for around $169. Since it's apparently a WD in the casing, it all comes down to how good the HP casing and controller is. Being HP, I'd be hesitant.

  • my 1tb of the same hd doesnt work very well with my rmbp. not stable, should i return it to bigw or keep it?

  • The drive automatically turns on/off as it senses activity on the USB port…

This is important - I bought the Buffalo 3TB from Bing Lees and it sits there spinning contimuously

You actually have to install software to make it spin down = hopeless.

    • Isn't it better for the health of the drive to not spin down/up constantly?

  • Why the unit price per TB for this 3TB model is higher or same with the 2TB model (officeworks price)?

  • Can anyone post some read/write speed tests?

  • I just purchased this with delivery to 3026 and received an $8 shipping discount which cancelled the $8 shipping charge and bought the price back to $169. Not sure if this is because I used an everyday rewards card, or because of the delivery address but either way it's a good deal.

  • Is this sold out online?
