I have a bunch of these and they're so good for a dual monitor setup (including the non-USB-C version) - but if you're using it as a single external monitor, I'd stretch to get a 32" monitor - as it is a better size for 4k / single monitor setup.

    • May I ask why you need your second monitor to be good? I have this monitor, and opt for a dual okay Samsung curved monitor to compensate the table size.

      • +1

I just have both monitors setup on monitor arms and usually have multiple programs / screens open at once. The consistent size / colour / dimensions across both make it easier to work with.

      • +2

I would hate to have mismatched screens

  • +2

Got this a couple years back. I rate it

I was very literally looking at this specific monitor, as I have the older U2720Q (bought at the height of COVID with the associated taxes!) and have been very happy with it.

We needed a second so was looking at this last night with intent to purchase today, so this deal came in at just the right time, thanks OP!

  • +1

got the non USB-C version (S2722QS) a couple of month ago as a second monitor to an ultrawide (non Dell unfortunately) for some additional screen estate, I highly rate the clarity of the picture and would buy another one just to get the full surround feel ;).

    • did you mean S2721QS?

      • +1

yes thats the one, not sure where the 2 was coming from

  • +1

Thanks ordered. Got one a while back for the missus, and now got one for the Father in law for xmas! Cheers.

but remember that Dell do not make monitors

Not sure what your point is — Dell do make monitors. They are manufactured and assembled in various countries, but mostly in China, just like 99% of brands.

      • -6

        Dell do make monitors

That is the real ignorant statement that I was expecting for the random gurus.
And it tells me that you do not have a Dell monitor otherwise you could read the name of the manufacturer at the back of the monitor!

        Who Makes Dell Monitors?
Dell monitors are made by various manufacturers. The company does not have its own manufacturing facilities, but instead, it contracts other companies to produce its monitors. Some of the companies that make Dell monitors include LG, Samsung, and AU Optronics.

The list of manufacturers from the following web link is not exhaustive but you're welcome to buy Dell monitors and educate yourself LOL
        https://whoisthemaker.com/who-makes-dell-monitor/

        • Dell monitors do disappoint, especially some of these S series cost effective models. One issue is you hardly get any firmware update support for these. At times, it feel like LG (one of the makers for Dell monitors) provides slightly inferior monitors to Dell.

This one, for example, doesn't have a DisplayPort, the only way to connect to a device through DisplayPort is via a special cable. Question is, does VRR work properly when you use that cable? Price is decent (but that's why LG removed the DisplayPort), quality control is somewhat questionable. Firmware… well, not that great to be honest. Software, clearly Dell purposely blocked the Mac app for USB-C monitors working for this monitor (so if you want that, pay Dell more $$$ for a more expensive model).

          • @netsurfer:

            Dell monitors do disappoint

That is a generalisation that no one will agree with.
I mentioned Dell monitors and I've been very very happy with two monitors, the first one served me for 10 years then I sold it for $50.
The second one is even better.
But if your pocket is tight, you've to find the best compromise.
This $227.70 Dell monitor is very affordable, it has a display port but I don't know what your requirements are

            • @billadm: I returned 2 Dell monitors (UltraSharp). One had a cluster of dead pixels (>12). Another one had 2 dead pixels and Dell insisted I paid for return postage (because they only cover bright pixels) and that's 2 dead pixels on arrival. The no bright pixel warranty for IPS monitors is fairly useless since IPS monitors generally suffer from dead pixels issue. They insisted I go through 14 days change of mind warranty instead of agreeing it is a defect. Buying an expensive monitor and have to live with 2 dead pixels from day 1 is not something I can accept. I basically blacklisted Dell for 5 years, but during Covid, I gave Dell another go.

The 144Hz display I bought had a glitch in 60Hz mode. I bought during Covid and since I normally use 120Hz or 144Hz, I let it go (because it took 2 months to get that monitor and will most likely take another 2 months to get a replacement which may still have the same issue). I know Dell fixed it in the firmware in the later batches. I asked Dell Support for that firmware but the CSR had zero idea on how to get it. LG's equivalent model doesn't have this issue.

You get what you paid for. The non-USB-C version of this display (S2721QS) has a known issue that VRR doesn't work over HDMI. It is unclear to me whether Dell actually fixed that issue in this model.

It's easy to not take a harsh stand on the products we purchased (because we tend to want to believe we made the right choice). Dell monitors are decent, but quality control isn't great, especially in the S and G range. The fact I returned 2 UltraSharp monitors meant even the top range isn't that great either.

I get Dell monitors because they are cheap, not because they are great. Both Dell and LG need to make money so can't expect too much.

              • @netsurfer:

The no bright pixel warranty for IPS monitors is fairly useless since IPS monitors generally suffer from dead pixels issue

It's unfortunate that you didn't get what you wanted or I dare to say, you gambled for.
I also would say that you knew the risk of getting dead pixels (the price was too tempting) but you still relied on the tricky warranty because as you know it's 100% impossible the get a monitor free of dead pixels!
I suggest you buy the monitors from a retail store where they care more about the client rather than the product itself, but that has a price!

                • @billadm: Someone asked me a question so I saw this comment. My experience is that Dell monitors certainly have higher chance of getting dead pixels compared to other brands. However, I wasn't impressed that Dell's Ultrasharp range's QC isn't much better. I am not talking about the G series or S series. Ultrasharp ones are more expensive and they are meant to be better.

Ultrasharp's replacement policy was (maybe still is) a load of ….. By rights, consumers should get 14 days warranty and that's the premium range, not this "cost effective" range.

These cost effective range monitors get even less support, especially on the firmware side.

          • @netsurfer: I just got the 27" 4K monitor [ Model: S2722QC ] for a family relative.

After buying it, I'm starting to realise, that I should have not opted for the USB-C version,
ie. I should have focused on having a DisplayPort.

Now, this S2722QC monitor only has
            ○ 2 x HDMI 2.0 port
            ○ 1 x USB-C port

So, I just wanted to ask you, what kind of computer output should I look for,
since I have been tasked to look for a 'cheap-ish' computer too.

            I keep reading HDMI has limits at outputting 4K @ 60Hz , etc…
so, now I'm getting more confused.

I'm used to building PCs, plugging monitors, etc… a very long time ago,
and so much has changed, that it's getting annoying with so many different things to worry about, ha.

            • +1

@whyisave: You have sent me a private message and I have replied with the details. Not having DisplayPort is also one of my main gripe with this monitor (because the LG equivalent model does have one). I understand Dell did sell it cheaper, but this causes a problem for people with older Intel PCs without a dedicated GPU.

Sent you links to 3 products which you could use to workaround the issue. The cheapest option does mean you don't get HDR support.

              • @netsurfer: Yes, I did write here, publicly,
hoping your answer will benefit someone
when they're searching on how to
                figure out 4K @ 60Hz with these DP-less monitors.

                Checking PM now.

  • daisy or not daisy

    • It doesn't support MST feature of USB-C/alt-mode. Daisy chain is a Thunderbolt based technology.

      • A shame. MST is available on much more expensive Dell U2723QE

      • +1

        Incorrect: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000128707/how-to-da…

Though Macs have never been able to take advantage of it.

        • +2

          As stated that page:

Before you get started, ensure you have the following:

          • Compatible video or graphics card (GPU) with DisplayPort 1.2 port
          • DisplayPort 1.2 MST-capable monitor
          • Latest video or graphics card (GPU) drivers

So, are you saying spend more money on another monitor that supports that? This monitor doesn't support MST (because the extra chipset needed to support it costs money).

Though Macs have never been able to take advantage of it.

That's why I mentioned daisy chain is a different technology. Apple won't support MST because Thunderbolt daisy chain is a better technology and Intel + Apple are shrewd.

          • @netsurfer: I guess we're both slightly imprecise. I was actually just correcting 'Daisy chain is a Thunderbolt based technology' part. 'Daisy chaining' isn't a Thunderbolt-specific term.

MST is 'daisy chaining', and this display doesn't have the output port that serves video on it. Not correcting you there.

Apple doesn't support MST for who knows what reason. Maybe they don't care because they don't sell a monitor that could do it. And even their current TB-connected displays don't support it.

            • @ozbargainsam: It is a bad idea to use the term daisy chain for USB-C/alt-mode based monitors. For people who don't know tech, we can understand what they meant. USB-C camp uses a different implementation calls MST. That's different to Thunderbolt daisy chaining.

I already explained why Apple doesn't support it. They are different technologies. USB-C is a big mess and it was behind Thunderbolt for years. When USB-C started catching up, Intel, to protect its own interest, donated Thunderbolt 3 specs to USB 4, but it causes a bigger mess. Apple puts in Thunderbolt based chipset in their monitors because that's a superior setup, bandwidth wise. However, the latest gen USB 4 chipset "may" change that, but Intel had been given that chipset maker a hard time. Thunderbolt itself is also messy.

From the page you posted, it indicates DisplayPort 1.2 MST-capable monitor. That's the correct term to use not DisplayPort 1.2 Daisy Chain-capable monitor.

  • Nothing for Dell 27 Monitor - S2722DC?

    :(

    • I have a S2722DC. Solid monitor :)

  • Student discount code makes it to $351.93

  • Is there really a noticeable difference in the image quality between the P and U versions?

Good price! I got it as refurbished for $350 in 2020.

    60hz gaming ftw

    • -1

Not sure who is gaming on this..

      • +1

Works very well for PS5, I upgraded to 120hz later, noticed almost no difference. Plus the refresh rate is variable, only time I get 120 is when there no movement 😂

        G3223q

      • +3

Lots of people. Those who buy bleeding edge gaming monitors are a tiny minority. But anyway 60hz is fine for 90% of the population. Personally I game on a 43" 60hz and love it

    • Any recommendations for a 27” suitable for both productivity and gaming?

I already have one of these, and want to go dual, but want to be able to get a gaming pc later.

      • No idea. I use a single 43". Which plenty of people aren't into for work though I like it

      • 27" is perfect for QHD. Too bad they no longer make the infamous S2721DGF, the newer model of this doesnt have the USB hub feature anymore.

That being said, if you already have a 27" 4K monitor, you might want to try find another similarly specced monitor so you have the same scaling between screens.
        Maybe the Gigabyte M27U?

  • +2

only 5% off. I will wait

  • Would this scale properly with the Mac mini?

    • Keen to know

    • +1

Unsure about the Mac mini, but I am using an older version of the monitor with my MBP 14" and it scales perfectly, so assume that would be a yes for a Mac mini.

    • +2

Depends what you mean "properly". For me a 4K monitor works and looks great in macOS, but technically the scaling only really works perfectly at certain Retina-compatible resolutions such as 5K. This article explains it:
      https://appleinsider.com/inside/macos/tips/what-is-display-s…

Apparently on certain Macs, Apple themselves use fractional scaling:
      https://bytecellar.com/2022/11/08/4k-scaling-is-not-a-proble…

For most people, it's a non-issue. You'll only notice it if you pixel-peep and obsess over it.

  • Weird question, but does the Dell OSD menu allow you to flip the screen orientation in hardware? I have a vertical monitor setup and would like to rotate it for minimal bezels. I know you can do it in software in Windows but when I have it connected to the PS5 it will be upside down…

    • Tried to set this up to mirror an iPhone at work and couldn't figure it out. I've got one at home as well and just had a look through the settings but can't an option to change orientation

  • +1

Be wary, Ive had a lot of issues with this monitor since purchasing around 2yrs ago. On certain sites / screensavers the screen would begin to flicker noticeably. Returned 2 of them, now on my third and it still faces this issue sometimes, albeit not as bad as before. Previously it would become unusable, it would slowly begin to flicker uncontrollably and the contents of the screen which caused it would be burned in to the monitor for a while. Pretty big turn off for me, it caused a lot of grievance trying to troubleshoot and returning twice, only to still have the same issue.

    • I'm currently with 2nd replacement of this one purchased about 1y ago.
Same symptoms, flickering and ghosting suddenly.
Replacement process is easy, it is a known issue so you just need to take a photo when it happens, they will send you a replacement in 2 days.
But, you will get a refurb one replacing your new product.

      • But, you will get a refurb one replacing your new product.

        That's dodgy.

    • I’m on my third. Original had loud coil whine when asleep, second had the left side backlight just die. All have been refurbished though.

    • +1

Try replacing your cable? Despite common perception, digital is not a case of it works or not, there's a middle ground where interference and other issues are possible

    • +1

I have the same issue with another Dell model (S2721QS). I'm on my second monitor now..

Do you have a Mac by any chance? I have a feeling it is a Mac only issue.

      • +1

That was my first thought as well, my S2721QS had this severe intermittent flickering issue when connected to my M1 Max MacBook Pro, and judging from all the forum posts online, a large number of people had a similar problem. I have no idea if Apple ever ended up fixing this as I gave the monitor to my parents after a few months to use with their Windows PC (where the monitor worked perfectly, with no flickering).

And yes, I already checked the HDMI cables, it definitely wasn't a case of bad cables. I tried a tonne of different cables including expensive Belkin 8K/60Hz cables, and it didn't make any difference.

Update: I just checked the Macrumors thread, it still seems to be an issue in 2023, though various people swear by odd fixes which I suspect are just temporary workarounds until the problem inevitably happens again — that's what happened to me, the flickering problem would sometimes not occur for a few weeks, and then it would be back with a vengeance:
        https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/m1-m2-flickering-ghosti…

      • +1

Yep, Mac M1 here, sounds to be most likely the cause…

        • Ding ding ding ding ding, we have the culprit. Apple silicon Macs and Dell monitors don't seem to mix, unfortunately.

    • Thanks for the heads up, I've been lost in the forums the last hour. Looks like it's not worth the stress, sadly, despite the great specs. Has anybody had any luck with a 4K non-Dell monitor to use with Macbook M2?

  • +1

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/810536
Extra 7% off with post above

  • Do they still sell the non-USB Type-C model?

  • I am trying to decide between Two of these or one of philips 438p1. Any thoughts?

    • 2 4k displays vs 1 4k display. Do you want a giant screen or 2 smaller ones..? I feel like this is heavily influenced by what you're using it for.

  • Wow, never thought this would drop to this price again after all the inflation price rises.
Interesting that it's on Dell's website though; previously they were on Dell's eBay page.

Anyway, bought two of these around this time two years ago and they've been just great.

  • Just want highlight that if you choose to not have integrated speakers, that model doesn't have USB-C charging

  • +1

Any recommendations for using 2 of these as a dual monitor setup with MB Pro(M1 Max)?

    • You cannot chain this monitor, so you will have to use two USB-C ports from your MacBook Pro. Also, you need to turn off the USB charging from one of the monitors. Other than those, the dual monitor set up should be fine.

      • thanks, is there a hub that can be used instead?

  • That's a really good price. I'm thinking of replacing my dual samsung curved monitor for this..

  • Ahh bloody hell, only just picked one up last week for $423 using the student discount.

Using it with my MacBook Air, loving the screen.

    • I read in a previous post for a Dell monitor that Dell credited the difference for someone when price lowered few days after purchase, would hit them up and see if they could do that

  • Thanks, bought one. Good combo with my M1 Air for doing online degree next couple years.

This is pretty much its cheapest historical price, even before its price hike, will be interesting if gets any cheaper for black friday.

Also Cashrewards tracked at $5.29, and getting almost $15 in Dell Rewards credit (theres a $5 reward signup bonus)

    • My cashback was tracked at $5.29 too but just got declined. Hbu

  • If you have two thunderbolt/usbc monitors and want to use them both, do you need to plug the both monitors into your macbook or can you somehow daisy chain these so that only one cable is needed?

    • +1

Apple supports Thunderbolt based daisy chain and generally, Apple wants you to use 5K monitors (so the display scaling ratio is better).

USB-C/Alt-mode with MST is a different technology. This monitor only supports USB-C/Alt-mode (no MST support). You cannot mix and match the two technologies.

Also, do bear in mind its 65W max power delivery support.

  • +2

had this for a few months before upgrading to G3223Q (4k 32" 144Hz).

if you don't game, and don't want to pay more, yeah get this one. but seriously consider getting G3223Q it's amazing for not much more.

    I'm seeing it for $379.50.

    • did the price increase?

Got this in 2021 and it’s been a pleasure to use alongside my Macbook Pro! The usb c feature is what sold me but yeah picture quality and quality of product in general is top notch. Bought for same price 2 years ago too haha. Would definitely buy again!

  • +2

Good monitor for productivity use. Do be aware though it doesn't have a DP port, so you'll need a USB-C to DP cable if using it with a desktop GPU.

  • got the same monitor in 2021 but the 1440p version, going strong an love the usb c

  • Waited for this in the last years black Fri and Christmas sale… too late… already bought and out of market…. Sorry Dell. 2022 model going on special at 2023 end…

  • +1

Bought this 2 years ago. Decent monitor with the extra handy usb hub. Unfortunately, my one started to flick here and there when I do casual gaming, so I get rid of it.

  • you can get decent 50“ 4k tvs for a bit more

    that’s 4 times the area

  • If I buy two can I plug one into the USBC port of my laptop (HP) and daisy chain the second one to the first one?

I currently have a dock but I also need to plug in power, I want to be able to just plug one cable and be done.

  • I've had this monitor for a few years and its been great. Looking to upgrade to something new possibly bigger. What do most people that have this monitor move to next?

    • If you're in Sydney, if you sell, pm me. X

  • +1
