Does KFC Save Breasts for Full Paying Customers? What’s Your Favourite Piece?

I don’t eat KFC all that often but decided to take advantage of the $15 Colonels Chicken and Chips.
I opened the box to find 5 drumsticks and 5 thighs. Not a breast in sight. Is that usual with these promo deals?

Edit - added a poll for your favourite piece of original KFC

Not from the one Chicken it isn't.

    • +1

      Haha

    • +2

It could be from at least one octachicken.

  • +7

no, I did the same order and got 10 breast pieces.

  • +12

As someone who often pays full price for kfc, no

  • +106

No one in a KFC store is paid enough to care.

    • -2

But if they could, they would give an entire box of that shitty little piece that always hides at the bottom of your order.

    • -5

But they care enough to refuse my request of NOT putting any wings in my chicken bucket… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • +3

It's because if they did that, it would leave them with excessive wings to try to give out in the next bucket, which would result in a complaint about too many wings.

Be easier if people just accepted what they were given, as long as what they were given was fair. So some of every piece.

        • -1

The last time i ordered a 9-piece bucket, i got 5 wings in it even though i told them i dont want wings and they refused the request.

  • +18

Lucky? If I'm getting KFC chicken pieces I want the fatty, tastier pieces. They can keep the breast for the burgers and what not.

    • +3

Yeh I agree but the missus was keen for breast

      • I think my wife complains more about it than me.

      • +21

If shes that keen tell her to have a friend come over.

        • Would be awkard if her friend comes round and has man boobs 😂

      • It's usually the hubby that's keen for breast.

        • touché

    • +2

Thighs are nearly always a better option. To cook with and to get even if you prefer breast. Main reason is thigh is very hard to (profanity) up and the margin of error on it means usually you get a serviceable piece of chicken.

Breast goes dry at the touch of a hat and nearly always KFC breast is dry as a desert.

However if we talking two equally well cooked cuts of meat then breast is great.

You can request what pieces you would like, if not, they prob are told just to even the drumstick to other pieces out.

@c64: Yeah, I heard that's from feeding the chickens hormones.

      • +4

As someone who regularly eats kfc in the work Ute, high drum stick ratio is a blessing imo

      • 5 drumsticks in a 10 piece box is a bit much

Sometimes, we just have a tray full of drumsticks and thighs. That's usually not the case though. Just ask at the counter if you want breasts.

  • +4

I did get told by a manager once they are supposed to be evenly distributed in the larger boxes. I got all wings in a 9 piece box and they replaced it.

    • +9

Wings should be sold off as cheaper wing only boxes

  • +1

KFC in other countries allows you to preference white or dark meat. Probs won't work here because there's a bias toward breast pieces; and many team members appear to have poor piece recognition. But if you prefer breast, always ask for a keel.

    • +3

“I would like a piece of thigh good sir”

Kfc employee: “vacant look on their face”

      • It's MA'AM!!!

    • +1

I remember in the US years ago you could choose white or dark, but white pieces cost more than dark from memory?

      • +1

        That sounds controversial

        • So does saying 'I like breast best,' but that seems to be okay in this context - and it seems thighs are the most desirable when we refer to kfc chicken pieces.

        • +2

I believe the term to use nowadays is ‘problematic’.

    • i was in singapore/malaysia recently and i saw someone at the counter exchanging the chicken pieces he received. after i collected my order and sat down, i saw i'd been given a wing and a thigh, i went to the counter and asked if i could swap them for 2 breasts. they put the wing and thigh back in the warmer and gave me 2 breasts haha. i went to kfc a few times in different cities and was able to do it every time. slightly unsanitary but 🤷‍♂️

    • Piece recognition is a training issue.

Bone In chicken come to the store in 2 different sets.

    1. a set with 5 types: breast, leg, thigh, rib, wing

    2. a set with 2 types: leg, thigh

I would guess they didn't have any of set 1.

    • +1

Glad to see someone is finally putting use to all those annoying bin chickens in the city.

    • Are you BOH? Didnt even know this. Sometimes we would just have a tray of legs and thighs and i would wonder why

      • What's BOH?

        • Back of House

        • Back of house (Basically cooks and prepares chicken)

    • Former KFC cook here:

For each of these sets, there's 2 chickens worth of chicken.
So for set 1, there would be 4 of each piece, except for the breast, where there is one.
So for set 2, there would be 9 pieces of each (I think, it was a while ago).

Typically when we cook in the store I used to work at, we would always cook 2 of set 1, and cook 1 of set 2 (sometimes 2 if it was busy), so most of the time, we cooked Original Recipe, we would be cooking 6 chicken's worth of chicken.

Regarding why there are so few breasts, doing the maths, there would only be 4 pieces of breasts out of 54 pieces of chicken.

If you have a larger order, there was usually a rule for the front, that for every 9 pieces of chicken that a customer ordered, you would try and throw in a breast (as breasts were actually the pieces least requested by customers).

Drumstick and thigh are far superior than breast. I'll die on that hill.

    • +7

Back in the day when they did 9-piece Tuesday, I used to request leg and thigh - to help out the breast-loving masses. Response: non-verbal, vacant expression.

    • +3

      Not alone,you won't.

      • +1

        And my axe!

    • You'll probably die on that quicker because of the choice!

  • +9

    Thighs ftw way juicier

Only plebs who cant cook prefer breast

    • The breast is harder to cook, since it's more easily overcooked. I agree dark meat is juicer, but some don't like the taste.

      • breast requires no prep, you just slap it on done.

  • meh …
OP : basically try going to a different store … your store == disrespect !!!

Atleast you didn't get ALL wings - which has happened to me prior when getting 9 pieces of chicken from my EX-local.

  • Breast is best.

  • +8

I opened the box to find 5 drumsticks and 5 thighs.

    50% drumsticks are a blessing.

Who even likes the breast pieces at KFC. Dry and lack the flavour of the drumsticks (I'm assuming because the oil can't go as deep into the meat).

Breast belongs in burgers or in a ceasar salad, not fried chicken.

    • I disagree, I don't think you can get juicer breasts than deep fried.

  • Don’t like to eat breasts deep fried, prefer them “au naturale”

    • +1

      Swing low, sweet chariot.

My daughter has 4 years experience at KFC. Her answer is ‘you think we care?’

As mentioned above, sometimes they just run out.

    • You as her dad, shouldn't you advise her that it's time to get a higher paying job?

      • It may be during High School or Uni. These are good jobs for kids while studying.

  • +5

I believe there's suppose to be 5 types totalling 9 pieces per chicken and I was under the impression they were meant to try and give you an even or fair amount of each? See below diagram.

    https://wadd.asia/page/431/fried-chicken-101-beginners-guide…

IMO In order from best to worst (if I read it correctly)
    1) Thigh (3)
    2) Rib (5)
    3) Breast (1)
    4) Drumstick (4)
    5) Wing (2)

Rib and breast are interchange or a draw for 2nd though.

May have spent too much time thinking about this. 😕

    • Wow, you know your KFC. Poll added!

    • +2

Never tried pulling the bones out of the pieces before eating, must get KFC now to experiment.

  • +8

    Hi All,

I used to work at KFC back in the day. Chicken get delivered in crates and would contain bags of original chicken peices. Each bag of chicken would come with 18 peices which would comprise of:
    - 4 Wings
    - 4 Thighs
    - 4 Ribs
    - 4 Drumsticks
    - 2 Breasts

However in each crate of chicken there is also a bag of just drumsticks and thighs, which generally means you are much more likely to get the ass end of the bird. Naturally the wing is so small, so anyone requesting set peices for a 3 peice box etc. will generally say no wings, which means the larger boxed meals generally over index on wings.

So it would be common to get 10 peices with mostly wings, thighs and drumsticks.

    • Wow I never thought about saying "no wings". Thanks!

    • How do you say no wings when you're ordering from the app?

  • +6

I remember during 9 for 9, the people in front of me said 'no breasts pieces please, just drumstick and wings' and the guy was like sure. So when I asked ' can i just get the breast and thigh pieces', "no we can't do that". and then he gave me 4 wings and 4 drumsticks, made him change that out.

  • +1

you thigh lovers will enjoy the new maccas chicken thigh patty with a hint of spice

    • Are you referring to McSpicy? I reckon it will be made from breast because that's what people want - but I haven't tried one.

      • +1

Yes the McSpicy. It appears to be made with thigh here but is breast in other markets. Purchased a stand alone patty for my friend to try who is a huge KFC thigh fan and he enjoyed it.

KFC Hot & Spicy is where its at. It needs to be a normal menu item… 😋

    • Move to WA.

      • I'm from WA. Havent you heard..? The master franchisor for KFC is now the same as our eastern state friends.. as such.. they are looking to bring the WA stores in line with the other stores.

        • Really? My local store (Ascot) were still selling it when I had recently.

  • +3

    Breast is dry af.
    Thigh!!!

  • +2

just asked my son who works at KFC,
basically echoed the person above who said 'you think we care?'

but the short answer is no, they don't save breasts for full paying customers,
but as you can see from the chook breakdown above, the bags contain 2 chickens with the exception of only having 2 breasts instead of 4.
This means your chance of getting a breast is reduced before they even start the chicken part assignments.
