Does KFC Save Breasts for Full Paying Customers? What’s Your Favourite Piece?

I don’t eat KFC all that often but decided to take advantage of the $15 Colonels Chicken and Chips.
I opened the box to find 5 drumsticks and 5 thighs. Not a breast in sight. Is that usual with these promo deals?

Edit - added a poll for your favourite piece of original KFC

    • Isn't the breast cut centred though with part on the ribs. (or maybe the missing ends up in burgers). ie if you cot a chicken cut in a bbq shop, you would have 2 breast, but at KFC there's 1 breast and 2 ribs.

      • +1

I think the piece everyone refers to as "breast" is technically called "Keel" and and chicken only has one Keel

    • The mystery of the 2 missing breasts…

      • +1

        I solved it, see above

I've tried to request mainly thighs in my order (we used to get the Family Feast but have grown (pun intended) into the Giant Feast) despite the "Set combinations apply" message on the menu board. Doesn't seem to change the combination we get much.

Maybe we need a secondary market for swapping KFC pieces…

I very rarely eat KFC., but recently the kids wanted some for a family meal, so i bought a 21 piece box from the drivethrough

The box contained about 1/3 wings, which were tiny (not much more than 5cm), and about 1/3 legs, which were not much bigger

To make things worse, it was so oily that the oil leaked through the box and the paper bag and ended up on the floor of the car (on a rubber mat fortunately)

The whole experience was most unsatisfactory

    • Terrible, such a disappointing experience.

    • +2

Reminds me of the Simpsons ep where Dr Nick rubs an oily drumstick on a piece of paper, and if you can see through it, it's your ticket to weight gain

  • been getting a lot of tiny wings from kfc of late in the box meals, seriously can't believe they count that as one piece of chicken…

    • +1

Order wicked wings instead…more meat on those than the wing piece and taste a lot better

    • Maybe KFC thinks customers should be grateful there's no mammal body parts in there like rabbits, rats and cats legs and thighs.

  • It's random but you should generally get an equal number of large and small pieces.

If you want something non-random then request it.

  • Damn I was hoping I'm the only one that loves Thigh. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • +1

Box full of drumsticks and thighs would be the ultimate box for me.

  • If it's hot n spicy kfc, the ribs are the best.

  • that would be my ultimate box, i always ask for thighs and drums. I hate the breasts its dry lol

  • The breast is my favourite because it's easier to get all the meat off with a good ratio of skin each bite. You also don't have to deal with all the cartilage/joints that are there on a drumstick/wing (I don't eat cartilage/joints because the texture is gross and it lacks any good flavour)

  • +1

I like thighs myself, wings is the worst piece, breast is a bit dry for me.

I have heard a customer in the past say they are allergic to the wings, so don't give me any on those.

  • +1

Employee here, Breasts just happen to be more rare on the tray. If you ask at the register, we will be happy to give breasts. Sometimes we just get a tray full of drumsticks and thigh's.

    • And sometimes you will be asked to wait.

      • +1

Yeah, there can be a wait for rotations of the chicken.

    • Username doesn't check out…

I didn't know thighs were so unpopular. I'll ask next time.

  • The last time I had KFC was way before covid when they had the $9 for 9 deals. Has the taste improved or degraded?

    • It's all random luck

    • +1

taste seems hits and miss for me, sometimes its good, sometimes its super bland, like they forgot the herbs and spices.

      • The spicy and crispy always used to hit the spot

  • +4

All I want is drumstick and thigh…glad to hear it's not preferred and breasts are the rarer ones

  • +3

I thought OP was joking. I ask for drum/thigh and if they can't fulfil I actually throw out the breast pieces (de-boned to my dog). He loves KFC nights bcs he knows he gets half of my order.

  • I prefer kingsleys

  • If you ever watch them pack your order, you can tell they are just grabbing any piece as fast as possible.

  • +1

KFC or not it seems like a lot of Aussies are prefer breast (white meat). Many don't even cook them properly - often overcooked, under-seasoned and dry, but seem to enjoy the texture and taste of it!

  • +1

What a lucky guy, 5 drumsticks and 5 thighs!!! KFC breast meat is the worst.

    • for breasts
  • -1

There is no KFC policy that does this….but in the end, what the person on the production line puts in is what you get.

The KFC near me doesn't differ the pieces depending on how much you paid.

Best way to understand it is the person packing your order, just gets told; x pieces of chicken on the order, On that docket it doesn't say anything about the specific pieces to put in. Also, most the time (when their staffed properly) the person taking your order (and knows how much you spent) is different to the person packing your order.

    • +2

If you order at the register, not kiosk or app, you can specify which piece, which in turn gets displayed on the order screen. OR Leg = Drumstick etc. You can also specify the amount of a certain piece that you want, for example, 1 breast and 4 drumsticks.

      • waaaaaat, so you can ask for 5 breasts if you want? or do they have restrictions on what you ask for?

        • 5 breasts. You after an orgy

        • +2

No restrictions, we will let you know if we don't have the piece that you want. Aslong as it isnt a huge order we should be able to cater

          • @Quarter Pounder: well i know what i'm doing from now on

          • @Quarter Pounder: Hmmm interesting because even for bigger meals staff would say they are set pieces

Once for a family feast i got 5 wings that sucked bad

            • @Poor Ass: In my training, I wasn't told they are set pieces. Register will let you modify the pieces no matter how much chicken you have ordered.

  • +5

People actually like the breast? They are always dry and not enjoyable. Only ahead of a crappy wing piece with no meat on it in the KFC pieces hierarchy.

    • Agree here.

    • In my inner circle, we call them drytits. They are only good when they are really fresh out of the fryer.

  • +2

Does KFC Save Breasts for Full Paying Customers?

No, we do not care how much you pay, we give you whatever is ordered.

    • I ordered on the app, so no option to select preferred pieces unfortunately

  • +3

I once got 5 wings in a box of 9 chicken. Emailed kfc got 9 pieces free and again got 5 wings in that lol

    • +2

I always feel bad for giving people wings - I avoid giving them out.

      • +1

Which is maybe why one poor person gets a whole bunch eventually?

        • +3

Nah, they just get left on the tray, and when rotations happen, I'm assuming they get chucked out

      • Except for wicked wings, those wing pieces are good.

      • You legend.

  • Nobel prize to the first maniac who genetically alters chickens to have 21 legs each and sends them straight to the Colonel.

  • Thighs and drums only for me. I would have been ecstatic if I got that box!

  • Breast is the driest piece in the box, my elderly mother in law likes them so I always have to ask when buying for her…

  • hands down best piece in a chicken is thigh

Also understanding probability, the chance of receiving a breast piece (the medallion one, with the cartilage in the middle) is the lowest.

The chicken at KFC is split into, 2 drums, 2 thighs, 2 ribs, 2 wings and 1 breast. So statistically, you will have a low chance to get a breast and should only expect around one max in a box of 10.

    • Ha wait until you get 5 wings in a 10 pack

      • I’m not saying I don’t get bad combinations.

I’m telling you how the chicken is cut up to understand why the breast piece is so rare lol.

        • if you get 5 wings in a 10 pack i'm fairly sure you can send it back if you bother to check

some reason I always get the breast piece but I much prefer thigh

I mean if the breast would only be good if it was freshly made but most of time it's very dry but breast is always dry in general not tender as thigh

in the US when I was there they actually let you order "white meat" or "dark meat" it was confusing at first but made sense. So you can order from the white meat where it's the top half of the chicken. Dark meat costs a bit more.

          • @Poor Ass: I am personally not keen on breast meat, however I find that circular breast piece is pretty decent.

The rib breast is dry as, so I can see why people like that round breast piece

I am 100% on the thigh team

            • @hamroll: nice

some reason the wings at KFC is incredible small…. it's like big everywhere else but small wings prob where they inject all the shit in them

when you have wings overseas KFC or even buy fresh it's never that small

              • @Poor Ass: i find their thighs are pretty small too, you go out to the butchers and buy a thigh piece, its way bigger, technically its in their interest to buy lower kg chickens. because they sell per piece not per kg

                • @hamroll: ya reckon all their pieces are piece jobs not actually a whole chicken ever probably they never seen all the parts of the chicken at once

  • +2

Who on earth would want fried breast more than fried thigh ?

Thigh is the best part of the chicken you can fry.

  • Town I lived in in Sth Dakota had an all you can eat KFC…. you just picked what you wanted… unlimited tubs of potato/gravy etc…

    • mate they used to have that in Australia in the 90's AYCE it was a dream

KFC Tokyo Grandberry Park still has AYCE with pasta, curry, chicken etc and all you can drink beer too

      • +1

Took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out what "AYCE" meant. I just kept saying it as "ace" in a very Aussie accent.

        • ha sometimes I need to Google up some of these acronyms myself

  • +1

Thighs and leg. You can keep your dry ass breasts.

  • +1

    You won! Haha
But honestly you can request what pieces you dont want (but cant say "all ribs/breasts")

So i always so no wing pieces

  • +1

I tend to get the 'cheap as chips' app order whenever I need a random fill-in meal for the family. (I sub one of the gravy's for dinner rolls)

I'm convinced staff are advised to dispose of the sub-par chicken parts in that order. The stunted wing bits that didn't make the 'wicked wing' selection, that cut of chicken consisting of 80% ribcage etc

I'm not complaining, it lives up to the name and you get a relatively decent amount of stuff for the price. For comparison, I've ordered a dozen wicked wings from the same establishment on a couple of other occasions and the quality and size difference of the wings is notable.

    • Nah, we're not instructed to give wings to any specific order, just come up to the counter and ask for what pieces you want after you order :)

      • i did that last time with a 3 piece box, no wings I said at the counter. Got home, still got a micro wing. Well played KFC.

        • +1

They're not meant to do that. Did you get 3 normal pieces with an extra micro wing?

Forgot to add on, can also request that you don't get a certain chicken piece, like breast, rib and wing.

  • +1

to find 5 drumsticks and 5 thighs

what is wrong with you… you got the best cuts

  • What ever has the best surface area of skin and coating to apply to my face.

  • +1

Order the cheap as chips and get the shit pieces. Guaranteed. All boxes are meant to get a variety of pieces based on the 9 per bird.

  • Breasteses for me.
