A new model one is also available for $24.99 delivered.

thanks again thatnasty ( you are not that nasty after all hahaha)

The PlayStation 3 Blu-ray remote control enables users streamlined access to the PlayStation 3 system's disc features. Unlike standard infrared remotes, the Blu-ray remote control uses Bluetooth technology so it can be used without ever having to point directly at the PlayStation 3 system.

Any good deals on Cod mw3 and battlefield 3?

  • hahaha, when i try to buy it online, it says the offer has expired. I think it's a dud on their side

EDIT: I called the Hoppers Crossing store, and they told me it's a particular model that's on clearance, and told me they have sold out. Something's fishy is going on… especially when they first told me they have the remotes in stock.

    • I just back from JB hoppers crossng store. Plenty of stock left there. Just bought house s1,2,3,5,6,7 for $65 .bargain. cheaper than amazon at this price.

    • NitNav. ,If you live near by please go and get it tonight or tomorrow morning.

I saw the Remote with The Hangover & Batman Bluray for $25 @ My local Hardly Normal

    • Thanks, got the newer model :)

    • Thanks thatsnasty….i saw the newer ones ( in the blue package)next to $18.98 ones. i will update my post because the new one is also very good price as well…cheers

      • I see a volume control, very intriguing - do we know how it works?

IIRC the PS3 slim can control TVs via HDMI but sadly the original PS3 cannot; or is it some form of universal remote with infrared as well?

Right now I have a Logitech universal + PS3 adapter thing.

  • If the price is accurate, it's a very worthwhile investment.

I bought one not long after buying my ps3. Blows away using a controller.

I bought a second one (knock off) from a HK site for about this sort of $. Worked well but I'd rather buy local.

harvey norman have it for $18. I believe this is the older model.

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-ps-blu-ray-disc-remote-c…

    • Yes…you are right…newer model have few extra buttons in the bottom and slightly longer (vol up and down…..ch up and down)

  • +3

    Whats the difference between models?

    • lol logged in just to ask that same q!

    • Am wondering too. From some comments above, "slightly longer, few extra buttons". Ch and Vol up/down..
Hmm not sure if it's worth an extra $6!

I assume this works with PlayTV?

      • +2

This model (the newer one) can control Sony TVs, just about any amp (if you have one), but it's primary purpose is to control a PS3 for Blueray and other media type functions. So if you like the idea of navigating your PS3 menu and controlling media functions (pause, fast forward etc) from a remote control, rather than a game controller, then this is for you. Double bonus if you have a sony TV, because it doubles as a TV controller, and also a bonus if you have an amp/reciever. I use my PS3 as a media centre, and I love this thing. I bought mine from the US (ebay) for $36, and have not regretted it. This is an awesome deal if you can get it, and if you think you'll make use of it (ie. you watch media on your PS3).

        • Forgot to add, for me, I have a sony TV and PS3 (which came for "free" with the TV). I love that I can control every aspect of both from the same control. For example, being able to choose media, play/pause etc, mute, volume up down, switch inputs, etc. I also love that I can use it when I can't find the normal TV remote :)

        • -1

So is that what the volume and channel up/down is for on the new one? To control it on Sony TVs? Because I don't suppose you can really change channels on a PS3 normally except with PlayTV. The only use I can see for it for me is to control PlayTV. I don't really watch movies or play music on through my PS3. I was considering one before for PlayTV, but I didn't feel it was worth it. For $18 though.. hmm why not? As long as it works with PlayTV!

        • +1

Sorry, after re-reading my "answer" I realised I didn't spell out the differences between the two very well. Yeah, main difference between the old and new is the ability to control the TV (if it's a sony) and amp/reciever - in addition to what the "old" controller could do. I don't know for certain if it will work with PlayTV (I don't have it), but I am certain it will, as every button that is on a normal PS3 game controller is on this thing, just in a "TV remote" style format. You could even in theory play games with it, albeit very awkwardly!

        • That's ok!

Ok if that's the case I will probably settle for an older one! Seems like the Harvey Norman price posted in a comment above is cheaper than JB though.
OP, maybe add that to the post?

        • We have the remote control and playtv. The problem we've found is the remote control batteries die really quickly, especially if you're watching tv for ages or even forget to turn off the ps3. As you probably know, the game controller switches off after a while, plus is rechargeable. We've switched to only using the game controller.

        • Ok that may change things. So the remote just takes standard AA batteries?

        • +1

yeah takes aa batteries but if you have rechargeables then its no biggie. Personally I don't have problems with it dying "regularly"

I use it primarily for playtv.

        • One lazy afternoon on the couch I attempted playing LBP with the remote, but no dice :( Doesn't let you load games without a controller

        • +1 to punk's comments. I have the newer controller, and I suspect it must have some auto-shut-off feature, but perhaps it's after a long period, like an hour. The first set of batteries I put in it (may have come with it, don't remember) lasted about 3 months. I use it every night on and off for about 3 hours.

  • Bought! Thanks.

  • Sony tv remotes for newer tv's also work on the ps3, i was going to buy one but find the tv remote just as good

    • yeah, I did that too, with the bravia link feature (I think that's what it's called). It was pretty awesome until I found this remote. The above controller is nicer for 2 reasons. (1) you can turn the PS3 on with it with 1 button press, which is tricky with the Sony TV remote via bravia link (but can be done). (2) when navigating menus (I have a LOT of media), you can scroll through it infinitely faster. Ie. if you want to “scroll down” 100 items, you’ll be able to in about 2-3 seconds. However with the Sony TV controller controlling the PS3 via HDMI, this takes about a minute. Not a big deal, but the easy on/off was a winner for me.

      • It was done through the ps3, and it turns it off and on just fine. Look deeper in the ps3 menu you will find it

There is no difference in scrolling, i tested both and there is no difference in performance. Again i dont use the bravia link as you say its slow.

Just to be clear this will work on the new model ps3 not the old model ie not sure about the newest model ps3

        • ahhh my notes below RE CEC also relate to this….

scrolling is a little slower but TBH, i dont spend a great deal of time scrolling though menu's i typically have things filed in different directories so i can get what i need to with a few clicks rather than scrolling… I like having less remotes.

        • Again i am not using bravia link, and there is no delay scrolling.

  • -1

i usually watch all my downloaded content on my ps3 via usb and control it using a bravia sync remote but the annoying issue is that i have to use the ps3 controller circle button to open the usb content(like a right click)to view files, so will this new remote change that?

    cheers

    • +2

You mean the triangle button? Are you putting your files in the correct location on the USB drive? I can't remember off hand but you should put your files in either drive:\PS3\VIDEO\ or drive:\VIDEO - must be capitals. One of those paths is correct, just try them. For music put your files in a MUSIC folder (possibly under a PS3 folder as well).

    • The PS3 remote has all the controller buttons you need for video.

  • If playing a video across the network does the new remote allow you to skip say 30 Seconds with one button as the old one requires about 10 keypresses

    • I don't know about 30 second chunks exactly, but it does have that ability (almost like scene selection on a DVD) where you can skip ahead with little thumbnails. Alternatively, press to the right twice for 10x playback, then enter to resume normal playback.

      • What do you press to get the thumbnails?

  • I hate using the controller as a remote, seems like a good price. Ordered the $24 one. Thanks!

  • The original remote uses Bluetooth only, so it only works with the PS3 (and the battery life on that was horrible).

The new remote also has IR, and they can be "programmed" so they work on brands of TV's other than Sony.

This is the only link I could find with more info on it…

    http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=2625

For $24 it's definitely worth it. Dick Smith have it for $39.95.

    • I've had my original remote that came with the PS3 + play TV bundle 3 years ago or so, and have changed the batteries maybe twice :S It's used on a daily basis. I don't really consider that horrible battery life.. Perhaps you had a dud?

  • +1

Side note, if you got fairly new decentish gear, CEC works amazingly well with the PS3.

(this is all done with the TV remote)
I turn on my TV the AMP turns itself on and switches to the correct input (for ARC), i turn the TV to the PlayStation input, the AMP switches itself to the PS input and the PS3 turns itself on, i can then use the TV remote to control the PS3 as its all CEC enabled… pretty neat…

Just saying it might be worthwhile checking if you can do it all over HDMI before buying another remote.

On LG its called SIMPLINK: i thought simplink was only for other LG devices like the manual said, but seems to work with my pioneer AMP and PS3 no problems…you just need to enable them all on each device (by default they where all off)

  • I was considering this purchase a few months ago, but wasn't aware of the new one with volume control for my Sony receiver and with that I just impulse purchased the $24 one heh, thanks!

  • I feel a bit ripped off when i bought the PS3 remote a few months ago for $40 when i also bought my slim PS3. Now look at it it's $18.

  • OzBargained!

  • Thanks! Got the previous model at HN Kessels Road, still had a few left but was not on 'display'. Was on the shelf with the other PS3 accessories, but they were faced down, hard to miss. The guy was surprised it was so cheap, still had the $38 price tag on it. I'm going to use mine for XBMC. Heard the new one isn't working correctly so I got the $18 one.

  • Man I'm so confused. Some people say new one is better some say old is??? What to buy!!?

    • +1

      It's a no-brainer. The new one.

I own both, and despite what others say, the older model had a horrible battery life on it. The bluetooth chewed through those AA's in a matter of weeks. Perhaps that's my fault because i've left the settings on my PS3 so they don't power off my controllers if they've been inactive for a prolonged amount of time, but others have also reported the battery life being rather poor on them.

The old one is bluetooth only, so it's useless with anything but the PS3, and its glossy black finish is hard to keep clean.

The new one uses AAA's instead of AA's. It is slightly longer, but it's thinner and lighter, making it easier to hold and use, and still just as sturdy as the original (older) model. Its matt finish is a lot better and buttons are well laid out and quite responsive.

The newer model supports infra red, so it functions like your TV remote would, and it can be programmed to operate your TV (not just SONY TV's).

Check your local store if they have them in stock. The website lies. My local store had a few of them, and even though they were stickered at $37.99, it actually scanned at $23.98.

The model number of the new remote is CECH-ZRC1E.

It's only been available for a couple of weeks, so there's not a lot of info about them online. Check my post above for a link that shows how it can be programmed to operate other brands of TV's.

      • great post graffin thank you. i have purchased and am looking forward to using it going by the buttons i see available.

the ps3 combined with ps3 media server i find to be a simple network solution with a functional diversity. bluray, audio, game rig, storage, web, wifi network is a nice combo for the luddite geek.

if i can get it talk with my yamaha amp i'll let you know.

      • Awesome reply thanks alot. So good i might get 2 :P

Btw, it says delivery only so dont know about checking local store…

  • Just bought one, good deal. Had the old type for a while now, this will really save me a second or two. First world problem solved!

edit: Got the newer version obviously as the older style is sold out.

  • Got the new one. Love how it controls my Pioneer TV.

But it is not working with my Sony STR-DB780 amp. I have tried amp codes 601, 602, and 603. Any advice?

    • How old is your pioneer? I have one of the original plasmas which im hoping it can control.

Also, when you get it to control a seperate device to PS3 can it still control PS3 at same time or is there like a mode switch sort of thing?

      • There's 3 clear buttons (that glow red when pressed) that allow you to select between PS3, AMP or TV.

      • I have the Pioneer Kuro LX508A from early 2007.

This has been thought through quite well. You only have to switch the mode if you want to use e.g. the number buttons. The volume up/down, channel up/down buttons stay active even in PS3 mode. The TV power button is dedicated and therefore active in any mode.

If only it would work with my Sony amp as advertised on the box!

  • Bought, thanks.

  • I was planning on purchasing one but now im having second thoughts as a couple of Ozbargainers have said that it doesnt work with their Sony amps. Just wondering if theres anyone whos tried the remote and can confirm that it works with the Sony Muteki HTM7? Thanks in advance.

  • checked my local at Kotara and they still had about 5 in stock still at $23.98

  • Hi All,
picked up the new remote and love it except it doesnt want to work with my sony amp…

    • bit old now, but have you enabled CEC on both the AMP and the PS3? (cant remember if its actually called CEC on the PS3)
