  • So its $289 not $259?

    • This time is OC version :D

      • You have $259 in the text!!! Was on they buy page and its $289 :(

        • Sorry Guys, it's a typo. The price is $289

        • +5

          …so fix it?

  • $259 or $289. Looked around for a friend a couple of weeks back, $336 for a gigabyte and $298 was the cheapest I could find at the time. $259 would be a great deal but I got a feeling these are gonna drop real fast after xmas

  • Your mainstream gaming system at $999 doesn't appear overly cheap - particularly given its an i5 not an i7

Good price on the graphics card though…

    • +1

You can try sum up the price of those parts :D

      • +2

        Non-wholesale prices…

        Intel® Core™ i5-3470 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.60 GHz)
        $179
        MSI H77MA-G43 Motherboard (Integrated USB3.0, SATA3 support)
        $87
        Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory
        $22
        WD BLUE 500GB SATA3 7200RPM Hard Drive
        $54
OCZ Agility III 60GB SATA3 SSD
        $52.9
Gigabyte Geforce GTX660 Ti Graphic Card with 2GB DDR5 Memory
        $325
        24X Dual Layer DVD-RW
        $18
Cooler Master Elite 371 Case (USB 3.0)
        $43
Thermaltake 600W TR2 Bronze Power Supply
        $84

So $865 all up if you buy the parts yourself…

        • Thanks Chriska - so $134 to build if you don't get the video card upgrade?

Seems steep… The Mr PC Geek guys mentioned in another thread (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81256) look like a better option for the full system…

With the video card upgrade seems a good deal at $899….

    • I find it a great price especially with the upgrade to the 7950, lol its cheaper with a better card? unusual but nice.
Out of curiosity is it possible to add more customisation to the system e.g. a higher watt PSU and an i7 3770k etc

      • Yes, you can call or email us for any customisation option.

    • +2

particularly given its an i5 not an i7

You don't need an i7 over an i5 for gaming. The only difference is hyper threading which won't be used in game.

      • Don't think he is arguing that, just that at that price the justification for being an i5 is not there. (as in, he thinks it should be cheaper seeing as it is 15)

  • I bought one of these on the last sale now the pc crashes anytime the display goes to sleep - big problem, apparently no solution either.

    • Weeping angels video card? Dr Who would know what to do.

    • +4

      Hi There,

We didn't hear anything back from you reporting this problem until now.
This problem sounds like the known "windows 7 wakeup" issue.
Please try get into M/B bios and find in power settings, there will be an option that controls power on/off for M/B when system goes to sleep. Please change the setting to "never turn off the M/B".

What happened is, your computer goes to sleep, when you try to wake it up, Windows 7 controls CPU, HDD, V/C very well, but some times can not wake the M/B 100% and that will make your system crash every time.

any further problem, please let us know, you can also email us to [email protected].

      Cheers!

      • Thanks for the support, but the issue isn't when the pc goes to sleep but when the display switches off after the screen saver. The pc is on just won't recover any display and needs a hard reset.
The video card has been great otherwise.

  • How many yrs futureproof will this card be (given the current rate of tech advancements)?

    • +5

How long is a piece of string?

      • Good response. That being said even if GPUs follow Murphys law, in 18 months from now I believe this card will still be going fairly strong.

        • +2

I think you meant Moore's law perhaps?

      • +1

        42

    • Depends on your definition of futureproof, if you have a low resolution screen you should be okay. It's not even the best of the best right now though so I don't really know what to tell you except that you should expect to upgrade your video card yearly if you want to run games on High. That said, you can always buy a second one and put them into crossfire when the card is not meeting your expectations in a year or two.

    • +1

play at 800x600 res = 10-15 years out of this card

  • This card is no joke chaps, if you OC this it should easily perform on par (or not noticeably different) than a 7970 or GTX 680 which are the single best GPU types around. But this is way cheaper than either of those.

    http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/34761-amd-hd-7950-vs-…

    • How much does overclocking a GPU affect it's lifespan?

      • Thats a difficult one to answer - depends on:
        1. Which card it is.
        2. How much you OC it.
        3. How much temp your case/cooling provides etc etc.

If you do it by small margins with the built in OC features of the maker(basically opening up catalyst software system which comes default and moving the oc bars to the right), chances are it wont affect the lifespan much at all(which is what the reviewer is talking about on the 7950 above).

If you use custom cooling and stretch the limits of the card to the max using custom software, the risk goes up hugely.

I am not an expert, overclockers is where the experts are: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/

But a lot of people get the lower card of the radeon range with mostly same features and then OC them to perform similar to the more powerful card - common example was 6850 OC'd is similar to a 6870

  • Price has gone up to $299!

  • drop it back to $289 and i'll buy one
