    Matching Aldi.

    • Anyone have know how it compares? Aldi one is only 4 speed and doesn't mention DC.

      • The closest comparison to what Aldi have isn’t even the same brand - it’s Stirling (not Mistral).

  • +2

Could be a silly question, but how do you tell with Bunnings deals what the pre-discount price was other than having it off the top of your head?

  • What's the best place to maximise its efficiency? Near window or corner

  • +6

    Any comparisons to Vornado?

    • also curious

    • +6

I will pick one up for my 4 x 4m indoor gym area and report back assuming my local Bunnings has stock.

Currently use a dynabreeze 450mm there but it’s wayyyyy too loud even at setting 1

      • +1

        What a gym?

I got one as well for use in my car hole

… but in all seriousness I did get one today for the lounge room. Hopefully it’s decent or else it’s going back to Bunnings

        • +2

Been happy with mine so far
          Wouldn’t pay more than 69.99

I think combined with a big window that gets good breeze it’s ok.

In a room with no breeze it’s soso if room bigger than say 15sqm

    • +1

If the Vornado models don't oscillate, that's a huge difference.

      • Yeah that too knew I forgot something

      • +1

And probably a negative based on the theory of how Vornado style air circulation works.

        • +1

And probably a negative based on the theory of how Vornado style air circulation works.

          Do you use these fans?

          It's a positive.

I have 4 Vornado-style fans. 3 of them have full oscillation. I have found this to be often better, except for situations like just trying to blow air down a hallway into a room.

I haven't really bought into the whole Vorando "just bounce air off the ceiling" thing that they have in their pretty diagrams. Because… I've tried this IRL.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: Note I said “the theory” of how they work.

Anyhow, since you asked. I have 2 ACTUAL Vornado fans, one 660 and a smaller DC fan, and they do exactly what they advertise if you set them as per the instructions, and do it very well. I’ve had them for over 5-6 years and still going strong.

I know the meta is to shit on everything that is a “brand name” but It’s probably one of those “designed” products that actually do what they advertise and are one of those “buy it for life” products.

The only down side is they are a bugger to clean, requiring a tedious tear down.

Obviously one that oscillates is still going to move air, but in a different way.

            • @LockedUpLotionClown:

Obviously one that oscillates is still going to move air, but in a different way.

Yes- it moves air in lots of different ways. Because it can point in different directions. But the air-moving part of it is very similar.

I've tried Vorandos, I've tried other brands. I've tried Dysons and Dyson-clones. I have found very little difference with airflow within each class of 'fan', which is unsurprising when these things run very similarly shaped blades.

I think the air circulator approach is much preferred over traditional box fans, tower units driven by axial fans, and Dyson style fans. I put very little credence in marketing theory.

After trying loads of different options because I used to live in the tropics, I've settled settled on Xiaomi and Whirlpool ones. The oscillation feature is very much worthwhile- you can run the fan speed slower with less noise and still get air moving all throughout the room rather than just blasting into one area and hoping that the speed/noise gets air everywhere else.

I have two vornados (660) and two of the ALDI ones from years back.

Just going to jot points down:

      • Vornado at the highest setting is stronger than the ALDI one at pushing air further.
      • Vornado at the highest setting is louder than the ALDI one. Both at highest settings, they are both loud (but I don't mind it).
      • Putting both Vornado and ALDI one close to side by side, standing in front of them and turning them on at the highest speed, I cannot tell the difference.
      • When standing at a fair distance, you can tell the Vornado is stronger at highest speed.
      • Both at lowest settings is pretty quiet.
      • Vornado still feels solid after all these years. Feels like it can last for many years further.
      • After a few years The ALDI one you can start hearing creaks at some points while it oscillates. Not very loud, but noticable. Very noticeable when sleeping though. Not a huge problem.
      • Oscillation is handy. I do wish the Vornado 660 would oscillate.
      • The ALDI one has a remote. That's quite handy too.
      • I use both models for different areas of the house for different uses.
      • The Vornado I use in larger areas, because it moves air very well.
      • The ALDI one, I use in smaller areas and where I need air pushed in different directions using oscillation (staircase) or if I don't need that much air pushed at high speed (bedroom while sleeping).
      • I don't use it the way they recommend in regards to pushing it to the corner of the ceiling. I have one facing the open door from other side of the room. I have one shooting at the wall from the other side of the room.
      • These fans are usually used to push air to a distance (example, i use a vornado to push air from one side of the lounge room to the front door while i'm cooking).
      • I also have two ARLEC wifi Grid fans similar to this (45 cm), but not the same: ( https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-45cm-black-grid-connect-sm… ). These Arlec fans work well in small or general rooms with pushing air all over the place. Vornado does pretty well in small rooms doing the same but it feels different due do how it's used. The ALDI one doesn't do as great but still does the job.
      • I do have air-con in every single room as well. Vornado and Aldi ones do pretty well to move the air-conditioned air around the room quicker.

      • You need to think of air circulators from the lens of: if there's a bad smell in the room or the air is stale, you would use an air circulator to move this air around. Or if you have air-con and you really want to push all the cool air around the room quickly, use an air circulator. Don't think of air-circulators as a cooling device. Yes it would cool you down in most circumstances, but remember they are air-circulators.

      • At the end of the day, it really depends on how and where you are using your fans.

      • Some other thoughts: having TWO ALDI fans (or bunnings fans) and placing them at different areas of a room, probably moves air more than one vornado circulator. Two ALDI fans = ($69.99 x 2 = $139.98). One VORNADO 660 fan = (currently $174 at TGG). So it is (currently) cheaper to get two ALDI/Bunnings fans. But electricity would obviously be more and having two would use up more physical space.

      • At max setting the Aldi one actually draws more power 70W vs Vornado 660 at 56W
Mistral is unknown but being a DC fan I guess maybe around 30-40W.

        • +4

Just bought one. Manual says 24W max

  • +2

    looks alright OP

    *dc
    *remote

would have been nicer if it was 0.99c less :)

It is categorised under "Desk Fans". Is it good enough for a whole bedroom at 26cm diameter?

    • +1

      I would say so.

    • How big is your bedroom?
      Have you got airflow?

      • 4.3x3.7. No fresh air coming in at night as we sleep with the doors and windows closed

        • No fresh air, I reckon no I would not recommend

Luckily Bunnings return is very easy , just give it a go.

    • Where do you see that? The other $69 Mistral oscilating fan at Bunnings is,…….but I cannot see that for this one,

although I think you're right going by size.

      • +1

Product width and length are provided on the product page as 260mm each.

  • ALDI has one coming in a week.

  • +4

bumping the question that someone asked earlier. Anyone have any comparison with Vornado?

    • +1

This beats the vornado both in terms of cost and energy usage. Acquisition and ownership cost savings would allow you to buy almost 3 of these to 1 vornado.

      • Thanks

  • I have AC Vornado. It blows but can't use a timer etc as it has digital switches.

  • Thanks OP

  • ugh, no specs.. wattage? flow rate?

    • +1

yeah and no info at all when goolging the model number. and doesnt exist on factory website…
so must be an exclusive bunnings item (heaps of these).

have had good experience with bunnings returns so I will roll the dice anyway

      • Keen to hear your thoughts, I'm in need of a new fan in my office thats not too loud

  • +5

Save your money and just get a cheap pedestal fan. They all do the same thing. These "cyclone" fans or "air circulators" are all just a marketing gimmick.

    • very interesting. thanks for the link

    • Thanks for this
This one is good too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L2ef1CP-yw

      • +1

Surprisingly conclusion was it was more effective to blow air out window than to try and draw in

        • Agreed. You learn new things every day. I've always been jealous of Americans having cheap access to window fans, no more!

    • Get a box fan…

    • Have you comparing different types IRL or are you going on YT reviews?

'Cause that review shows total air moved, which is one important factor, but it doesn't show how far the resultant breeze travels.

I've found with the standard box and tower fans, there is loads of air moved right up close to the fan, but on the other side of the room you can barely feel anything. So you have to crank up the fan speed until it gets noisy and starts buzzing and shaking.

Fans… just are not as simple as many people like to think. It's been accepted for absolutely ages with computing enthusiasts that there's differences in design for airflow vs static pressure. Noctua does fancy stuff with trailing edge bumps to change turbulent airflow to reduce noise. I've spoken to someone who was responsible for designing fans in a commercially available air purifier about the intricacies of the design (and he still managed to produce something that was horrible).

So sure, all fans fundamentally move air. But that's like saying that all tyres are round and help a vehicle move forwards on a surface.

        Did you watch the video?

      • Did you watch the video?

    • That's not what I got from it. It seems to suggest that high velocity fans are superior to traditional pedestal/box/Dyson fans

    • +1

Was considering this but now unsure if air circulatiors are just a marketing gimmick and many are drinking the kool-aid or they are the real deal?

  • Costco sells non Vornado air circulating fan around this same price. Similar size and if not mistaken it has remote.

  • Thanks, picked up one for the kids bedroom. She has a bunk bed now and this should help move the air around near the ceiling where is getting hot.

  • +6

Picked up the last one from my local Bunnings. Testing it now. Initial impression - it's definitely very quiet. On setting 7 (out of 12), it's a very gentle hum and quieter than the lowest setting of my cheap kmart box fan. As I'm typing this now, I dare say the cooling fan on my laptop is more noticeable than the Mistral.

Quick and dirty airflow comparison. On setting 7 of the Mistral, the airflow feels about the same strength as the highest setting of the cheap box fan with my hands around 50cm away from the fans. The biggest difference is, as I move further away, the box fan airflow strength drops quite dramatically whereas I can still feel some airflow from the Mistral from several metres away.

  • Went in store to grab one but the fan is so tiny. 23cm. Only stock at Castle Hill is the open box one too.

  • If you are spending $70 for this one, might as well consider Costco's Woozoo air circulator, $80 delivered requires membership: https://www.costco.com.au/Home-Furniture/Heating-Cooling-Air…

Good reviews on Amazon also: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07NC3GCLJ

My free street stand fan is still working fine after 8 years. Does this fan produces magic wind or something?

  • Can I use air circulators to suck in cool air from the outside to displace hot air inside a house ?

    • +1

This is just a guestimate- imo that might work for a single room, but you'd be hard pressed to affect an entire house. The output from a single fan will be tiny compared to the overall pressure effects of a breeze coming in from any side of the house.

To affect a house significantly, you'd probably be looking at those giant cylindrical fans used in places like building sites. They are crazy noisy and very power hungry.

    • +1

Per the YT link above, it's more effective to push hot air out a home, and allow the cooler outside air to enter via a different window

  • I have this fan, happy with it

  • +1

What are they like for use when training on zwift or similar ?

  • Anyone know the power rating? Would love to take it camping run on inverter but need to know power budget overnight. Is there a 12v variant of this type of thing?

  • Thanks op
I just picked up the last one at my local.
Was suss that it had been tampered with but inside looks intact will compare over weekend

  • Mine was delivered today. Plugged it in and it won't run…

    • Mine was delivered today too. It runs, but does not oscillate - just buzzes and jerks a little.

I guess now I get to see if Bunnings will do a faulty item swap, return or refund, without trying to make me go into the store.

      • The returns process was easy enough. I have not done it since they started using OnePass.

I replied to the order (but addressed to customer help) with a short video attached of the issue.

They didn't have any more fans in stock, and couldn't organise a replacement. But did organise a pickup of the faulty fan, and refunded it. I just had to hand the fan over to the delivery person, or leave it outside my front door.

I ordered another, but the order got canceled due to be out of stock - despite showing as in stock.

Still, overall it beats my experience before OnePass, where after sending the wrong item, they argued long and hard about me needing to come into store for a refund, despite the broken ankle which had prompted using delivery in the first place!

  • +1

    Suitably impressed for the money.
Would happily take two of these over a 633dc which I already have.

    • I have the 633DC and am looking at this as well. Care to share how is this better? I use the 633DC at night at low speed and it is almost 100% silent which is great.

      • Price mainly lols

Even though iirc I got my 633dc at like 177 at tggc

In my small gym area I leave it at the door and I can feel it from the opposite corner. I am using it at max speed and can just barely hear it over my projector speakers.

The industrial floor fan I was using was wayyyy too loud even at speed 1 which wasn’t moving that great an amount of air

Plus remote function is great for when I am on stationary bike

If you’re on the fence just get one and return if not for you

        • Haha thank you for sharing.

Bought one (MDCCF-9) yesterday afternoon from the 2 remaining at Balcatta store, Perth northern suburbs. We have A/C in our upstairs big bedroom but a fan is often preferable & we've always had one. My trouble & strife said about this one after watching it oscillate like a big eyeball last night: "This is the best fan we've ever had up here".
It's a large bedroom yet there's no real need to have this thing above 7 out of 12 setting. At 7, it's just beginning to be heard; with TV on, at that setting it's inaudible. I'm very pleased with this but more importantly, so is the wife. Certainly much much better than the cheap noisy junk available from Kmart etc.
Tech specs: AC adaptor gives OV of 24V DC, 1A, 24W.
Good find OP, thank you very much.

  • I went to Bunnings and picked one up only to find the adapter wasn’t in the box so I returned it for another one and the same issue again. Got lucky with the 3rd but just a heads up that there’s a few lemons

    • why do you need an adaptor?

      • +1

This is a DC fan, so it doesn’t run directly off the mains

  • kmart reviews give this 40cm floor fan a perfect score

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/40cm-high-velocity-chrome-m…

    anyone have it?

  • +1

just for future reference, I bought the Aldi fan which is a similar design, same cost:

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-25-…

pretty poor quality. Not DC, the remote didn't work well, of the 3 speeds, the first was silent with no power, the second was too noisy to sleep to and the 3rd was super loud but blew hard.

    Returned and bought this one.

Of the 12 speeds, it starts getting noticeably loud at 9 with 12 (max) being probably a bit weaker than the Aldi fan but noise is far more pleasant. I'm reasonably happy with it for the price, but am intrigued by how powerful the Vornado DCs are now.
