Unfortunately these aren't as good as the older TP-Link Kasa switches which were supported fully offline / local with Home Assistant. Not sure if most people care but to me this is a deal breaker. Upvoted for good price though :)

    • +4

Have you found any good options that work locally? I have these and quite like them. Great price, quite small and works well in Home Assistant. But yeah, the downside is they aren't local.

      • +1

I'm also keen for a power monitoring/switching plug that works locally (bonus points if it acts as a ZigBee router).

Good price for the Tapo units though

        • +1

what do you mean by "works locally"? Does this switch have no button to on and off without wifi?

          • @blueboy410: Assume that it doesn't send your power usage data to some random server on the interweb… that it sends the data locally on your network.

        • +4

wait for the TP-Link P110M to become available. works over matter.

That’s a Zigbee smart plug with power monitoring.

Being Zigbee it may be able to run locally, without a cloud backend for power monitoring. Having said that, OzSmartThings seems to resell some re-badged Tuya, and I haven’t tried this device myself…

      • I haven't tried, but I think this HA integration says it works over LAN?
        https://github.com/petretiandrea/home-assistant-tapo-p100

        • that definitely looks good but it does have a warning saying they may not work without an internet connection

        • Your Tapo is still logging to the internet website, the github plugin just uses your tapo website login to pull data into HA. It's deffo not Tapo —> HA.

          • +1

@t0by: I think that integration is talking with the Tapo locally, but the device still needs internet connection for the auth side. They talk about requiring a static IP - the only reason for that would be if the HA integration is sending packets to a given IP, and it can't change.

            • +1

@bienvenu: You are right. I unplugged the internet and still was able to see the Tapos in HA along with their power usage in HA.

      • Unfortunately not, I just stocked up on kasa while I could

      • +2

I use the Arlec ones from Bunnings (PC191HA). Load with the Tuya IoT Platform and use LocalTuya in HASSIO to connect locally. Found the newer Series 2 to be unreliable, would connect locally then drop out and not detect again. My local Bunnings keeps refilling the black ones (Series 1) but all the white ones appear to be Series 2.

      • +1

You can get 'athom' branded hardware that has tasmota pre-flashed if you want local. Or just modify a sonoff or whatever with your own esp32.
        https://templates.blakadder.com/plug.html

      • the meross ones are hybrid, they work over LAN and remotely if needed

    • +1

yes the old ones show up easily.
I saw there a HACS plugin for the Tapo ones? have you tried that? i havent yet, ive been too busy to statically assign an IP to my smart plugs.

      • Nah haven't tried that but it does seem to still require internet sometimes which is a little annoying

      • I did this over the weekend. I had never used HACS but managed to install it and set up a Home Assistant easily enough. I have our Washing Machine and Dryer Plugged into one each and have it send my wife a notification when they are done (via the drop in voltage). Its pretty darn neat.

        • nice. I had wanted to do that , but .. my plugs are busy with other things.
i dont really want to buy more . given that i have 9 in total (of varying models)

        • Can you share the config you use to achieve this?

          • +1

@dave31: Not much to it. Plug them in. Set-up home assistant, install hacs, then the tp link extension. Then I set up an automation to notify when the power drops below a certain value.

      • +2

I've been using the HACS plugin for a few weeks.

After the initial setup, I blocked the plugs access to the internet via my router, and it has worked reliably since.

I would prefer something natively supported in Home assistant, preferably ZigBee, but could not find a decent alternative.

    • +1

why did they stop producing kasa??

      • I think they only stopped selling them in Australia, and seem to have switched almost exclusively to selling the Tapo range of smart devices locally. TP-Link are still selling and releasing new Kasa smart plug models in the UK and the USA.

        • thats lame af…

    • I got negged last time I raised this point. I purchased these originally because it could be used offline.

  • Haha.. I thought it was a Powerline adapter, and got all excited !

    • Lots of powerline adapters are sold for cheap on Gumtree/FB market.

      • +2

Because after we've used them for a while, we realize it's better to run a cable or even just use wifi extenders :(

  • +3

The Tapo app has an option in it asking if you want to activate it locally when you add the device. Did it the other day with this adaptor.

    • I just tried after seeing your comment. But I can't seems to find that function. Are you on IOS or Android app?

    • Did you need to sign in first?

      • I assume I was signed in the Tapo app

I can’t see it anymore as I already clicked to activate it.

        Using iOS

  • If you have Telstra points also available as a reward for 10,000 points.

    • +1

You could use 10,000 Telstra points to get $20 in Amazon Gift Cards instead, although gift cards don't work out very good value, you are still $3 up.

Alternatively save the points for something you need, even at 'full price' 10k points could get you an $80 Belong Starter Kit full price or a $30 prepaid recharge.

      • I have a bunch of Belong cards I don't need and have since used all my points on the Tapo stuff that I constantly use. But the Amazon card is a good extra bonus when on special there I guess.
I would add though, The Amazon method would be safer as far as warranty goes as Telstra Plus after sales is non-existent and provides no proof of purchase, also for some may get a receipt for tax deduction.

    • Have you got any details on this please?

      • +1

Telstra Reward Store link. For Telstra customers who have accumulated Plus Points (earn 10 points per $1 spent on Telstra bills etc).

      • If you do get them directly as a reward. Note there is an option to pick between the the energy monitoring and non-energy monitoring.

  • I bought this at Bunnings last week at $17. See if Bunnings can price match + beat?

    • I thought it was the P100 (no monitoring) ones that were $17 at Bunnings last week ? I bought a 2-pack of these P110s at Bunnings for $35 last week (bought 3 packs).

I am not saying this is not a good deal, I am sure it is a proper device from a proper company. In case anybody needs local control and zigbee that works on HA this works fine for me: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005002605377621.html . Not an affiliate link or anything, I am not earning anything from it.

    • +1

are you using these zigbee plugs right now?

      • Yes

  • Does anyone know how to set up this plug as a countdown timer for a heater?
After the heater is on for 15 minutes, it will turn off automatically.
This is very usefull for bathroom.

    • +1

Yes, this smart plug does this.
I do this often when charging my smart ring. Get it to charge for an hour then turn off. Timer works for OFF or ON.

It's done using the Tapo app.
Select the plug. Select Timer. Select Turn Device OFF. Then select 15 minutes. Press Start.

A Python library is available for controlling this outside of the Tapo app:
    https://github.com/fishbigger/TapoP100

    • Nice, can easily do some datalogging for power consumption and controlling it through Discord.

    • Nice! Does it need an account with tplink setup initially before using this?

      • +1

Yes, just for the initial setup.

  • Bad Quality, broken after 02 months using it.

    • +2

What happened? Stopped turning on or something else? I haven't had any P110 fail as yet but haven't been using them for that long.

I did have a P100 fail after 23 months (the other 3 are still going fine), it just wouldn't turn on anymore after using it everyday. TP-Link & Bing Lee were good with warranty, TP-Link gave me RMA then Bing Lee paid for return postage and refunded me the $16 purchase price (as they didn't have P100 in stock), and I replaced it with a P110.

      • It was blinking and I can't control it by app anymore.

        • Ah right, factory reset didn't fix it? Factory reset (press hold power button for 10 seconds) + set it up again in the app?

If not, hopefully you got it replaced under warranty.

          • @hamza23: yeah, tried to factory reset it, but it was useless T_T

        • It also happened to me I used for 3 months and the light was non-stop flashing and making a clicking noise.
Tried doing a reset but that didn't do anything.

  • Will these block the second outlet on a double point? I just got a couple of Meross ones that work great but are too bulky

    • +2

      Nope, they are mini/slim.

  • How does this compare to the Eko wifi power point?

    • I was going to comment … these look like the EKO ones from BigW

  • +1

FYI if you can find stock the Crest Smart plugs with energy monitoring from BIGW are on sale for $7.50, or $10 with 2 usb ports.

TP Link has released a new Tapo P110M - matter certified for this.
    https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/smart-plug/tapo-p…

    • -1

Also the IOS Tapo app is now 542 MB while the Philips HUE app is less than 250 MB. I wonder what the app does in the background? 🧐

    • I was waiting for this to be released in Australia, but ended up going for the current model anyway because of the discount price and the fact it can already be controlled by open source tools. Not sure what the new model will retail for, but the many have suggested it would be more expensive.

  • too late looks like OOS
