One of the central tenets of my 30 year IT belief system is:

    Never buy Acer

So much evidence, like the time they produced monitors that spontaneously caught fire - saw one do this myself sitting in a government office - i warned the lady that it was about to go up as i had seen the magical blue smoke start to emerge. She looked at me like i was on crack, until her colleague next to her told her to get up just as the orange glow started…

Then theres the time that UTS (University Of Technology Sydney) where i used to help out with reprovisioning of computer labs at xmas time, and a few years back they switched from HP to Acer as Acer "gave us a great deal". Deal suddenly less great when EVERY single desktop from 12 head high loaded pallets was found to have the same flaw. That several thousand PC's in just one campus, minus the 20 or security guards stole (hint: Its ALWAYS security guards who steal shit at Uni's, just so you know) or thought they got away with stealing….

Then theres over a decade of seeing their craptastic devices in private tech support. To be clear all vendors have bad runs or years, but Acer gets the golden toilet roll for excelling at proactively making crap.

Their devices are cheap for reason folks. Spend more $, get better results.

My kids own an Acer each, they take them to school, treat them real rough, play games all the time, never had issues as mentioned.

When I started out in IT support 20 years ago after graduating, I remember opening up an Acer desktop and being shocked to find an ad hoc wiring connection on the motherboard.

It's long time ago though; maybe they've improved their design anyway.

A Budget-Friendly Entry Point for Gaming

The new Acer Nitro 5 doesn't top any benchmark charts, but at $899 there's not much room for complaint. The system is one of the least expensive modern gaming laptops, while offering a good components and features baseline.

Take the screen and storage. A 144Hz display has become today's minimum expectation in any gaming machine, but it is still nice to have at this price, and there are plenty of ports, too. The 512GB SSD will fill up quickly with large game installs, but even pricier systems often have no more storage in their base model configurations. If you're concerned about consistently hitting 60fps at top settings, you should probably opt for an RTX 3060 machine like the MSI Katana GF66, but the Nitro 5 remains an attractive, affordable alternative.

I went into OW and checkout the demo machine there, it is so damn low quality plastic, the keyboard feels like kid's toy, whereas the Lenovo Legion sitting right next to it feel and look so much more up class, don't risk your hard earn cash please

  • How well would Cyberpunk 2077 run on the Acer Nitro 5 (RTX3050)?
