Travel to China: Sim Card Suggestion

Hey everyone I'll be travelling to China end of year with a mate.

I was wondering what if anyone can suggest a cheap sim card plan (that has both a number and data).

I know that you could go the roaming route but it seems so costly per day.

Any suggestion would be helpful thanks!

  • Sorry this isn't what you asked for, but travelkon still has their special but it doesn't include calls for China by the looks of it.

Could you get away with just data plan? And use WhatsApp calling….

  • Yeah I was considering going through with that but I have heard from others to get a phone number especially being in china.

Just wondering if there are cheaper alternative compared to roaming?

  • If you do not have to make too many phone calls, would Felix + global roaming be a fit?

  • (that has both a number and data).

    They all have numbers.

  • You can easily get a sim card in China which includes phone and data, but it's not going to be cheap either, I remember it costs me around 200 CNY (40+ AUD) for the starter pack. It has more data/voice, but locked within the great firewall, so you'd need VPN to access whatsapp, etc. I found it more convenient with roaming travel sim card as it automatically bypass the firewall, you save money on that VPN as well.

    • so you'd need VPN to access whatsapp

They might target you with sonar pulses…

and 15% off if you have a 28 degrees credit card…

Don't forget the free plan too, once each calendar year…

I used the HK Three sim recently. It doesn't have calls but plenty of data you can probably do voice calls over Facetime, etc..?

LetsVPN is the best VPN option I have come across, very reliable.

I would use roaming on an external provider, as it dumps you out on their home network. Eg voda $5 daily roaming would still give you an Australian IP/unfiltered.

hey everyone thanks for your help. I'll probably look at roaming options as it's easier vs getting an international sim and then getting VPN on top.

  • I was in China beginning of November and used a Holafly eSIM. I had no issues with it - it worked perfectly, speeds were reasonable and unlimited data. Didn’t need a VPN either. Data only though, so no local number, but I just used WhatsApp.
