A Nihonto starts around15000 dollars ..the Japanese take blade making as an art ..this is just silly

  • What’s the deal with the legality of importing, owning one, etc?

    • +1

Two areas of law. Importing is Commonwealth and ownership is State. IANAL but did buy and sell these kind of swords for a long time. In terms of importing swords there weren't any issues with normal swords when I was doing it, customs started to get thingy with things that could reasonably be considered concealable or when you're getting into things that could be (or are) considered daggers type thing.

Ownership is state based and I think most were along the same lines in that normal type swords are fine for ownership and when you get into daggers etc it becomes problematic, although even then, where I am somewhat ironically if you had 1 you were in trouble, but if you had 3 you could call yourself a collector with some basic paperwork requirements.

Victoria is different and have stricter rules on these things, including swords.
Of course, ownership is a different kettle of fish to their use….

  • While you were all browsing Ozbargain, I was studying the blade.

  • OP - Please provide link for 159$ item. When sorting by price 'low to high' the lowest item is 309$ which after 20% off is far from 159$
