ATL at $40!

  1. IP44 Waterproof, can be used outdoors or indoors, so a handy one for charging your EV/Christmas Lights and tracking usage (or restricting to day-time charging)
  2. Test items around your home for energy usage to track down heavy users
  3. 10A loading and grounded for higher draw accessories
  4. Automatically warm up your Coffee Machine for that perfect James Hoffman approved brew temperature every morning
  5. Automate your bedside bacon breakfast and scramble into work for some co-worker first-aid

So many uses for these things. This is an ATL price and I haven’t been able to find a comparable kit that supports such a high power throughput. The dual-slot is also nice since it acts as a double adapter and you have individual control over each of the ports. Combine with iOS Shortcuts or Hey Google and you can easily setup voice commands on all your devices.

I’m a sucker for Meross HomeKit products, checked their page and here’s some other deals:

10A loading (much higher than usual 2A). Aren't most powerboards/outlets rated for 10A? 2A seems very low for a smart wall plug.

    • I’ve seen some Smart Plugs that have problems in the reviews with larger consumption. The TP-Links in particular have had this issue when I looked into it for sustained higher amp uses. But YMMV so it’s up to you. These are still good value for the IP44 and can be used outside.

      • +1

They fail because the device exceeds 10amp on power up, not because they are rated lower than this. This device is no different. It will fail the same way as the tp-links (except for the older kasa rated to 16amp peak).

      • +2

Yeah, ordered as it seems decent to replace my current set up for Christmas lights. Particularly since it seems there is a local mqtt option for HA control. Just never had issues with other smart plugs and >2A draw. But I haven't used TP-Links.

    • +4

If it's got an AU outlet but is only rated for 2 amp then it's non-compliant and shouldn't be used.

  • The listing actually says to avoid high draw applications like pool pump, filter etc. Why would this be the case if it's rated to 10A?

    • +1

10A is the nominal draw - proper outlets need to support around 16A peak. Motors (pumps), most 2400w heaters, etc hit peak when first powering up then drop back to nominal. These will fail.

    • Apologies I didn’t know they actively discouraged that. They do seem a very solid bit of kit so perhaps it’s more of a disclaimer than an actual limitation.

      • +1

Just no! They are rated to 10amp peak. Having a tougher outside shell doesn't make them better at supporting devices that draw over 10amp peak.

        • +1

Got it! I don’t have a pump myself personally, but thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately I can’t edit my comment anymore so I’ll leave this all here :-)

          • +1

@JSONBourne: This is the spec - note it's max 10amp split across the two sockets.

            Input EU/FR/AU:100-240V~, 50/60Hz, Max 10.0A
            UK:100-240V~, 50/60Hz, Max 13.0A

But still a useful tool if you keep to those specs.

      • They do seem a very solid bit of kit so perhaps it’s more of a disclaimer than an actual limitation.

        I bought this last year.
My electrician didn't want to take the risk of installing this outdoors as the cover doesn't actually properly seal against rainwater.

So, only using it indoors for now.

        • +3

Why would you get an electrician to install this? That's like calling an electrician to plug in an extension cord…

          • @NigelTufnel: FYI, the sparky/REC was hired for wiring up new outdoor GPOs and other licensed electrical works.
            Don't make silly assumptions.

    • +1

I use it to control my pool pump, been about 6 months hasn't been an issue. 1hp pump.

LMAO about bedside bacon breakfast. Get DWight to give you first aid!!!

  • +2

Why is my coffee machine outside?

    • Maybe EV road trip?? and Waiting for hours for it to charge?

    • You don’t make your coffee outside!? James Hoffman says it’s the only way!

    • To collect rain water. Tap water costs money!

    • And the beer fridge?

Can you set a timer to shut off? In that case, can use it charge Ozito batteries and shut off after a few hours.

    • Yes you can. You can setup all kinds of automations (time of day based, timer, Geofencing). So that’s definitely a good use-case.

      • Any insight on how to set up an auto shutoff after a set amount of time? I’ve been trying to figure that one out with my meross plug for a while.

        • +1

You can use homekit, make a shortcut/automation to turn on the socket and then turn it off after x minutes.
Better yet, use Home Assistant to do so, you get more control of when its triggered and how long it stays on for.

        • +1

Annoyingly ridiculous that their app doesn't allow this as default like so many other similar plugs/apps

        • I was able to do this with my meross plug using the smart routines in the meross Android app, I use this to turn off a heated towel rail after an hour.

  • What's the length of the cable? Can't find it. Is it like 10m or something?

    • +1

      https://shop.meross.com/products/meross-outdoor-smart-plug

Looks more like 10 cm in the first pic. Which is different to the other pics.

    • It is short, more like a meter.
I can measure it - if it is important.

      • That’s ok. I was hoping I could get one of these for a campsite but not at that length

    • The shortest cable I’ve ever seen on an appliance

    • 90cm it's buried down further in the Amazon listing :

      Technical Details
      Dimensions (W x D x H): 5.9 x 3.1 x 2.0 in. (excluding power cord: 90.0cm/35.4in long)
      Input & Output: 100-240V~, 50/60Hz, Max 10.0A

  • can be used to Automate external lights. it also integrates with Google home

    • Don't give me ideas….

    • Is that an additional feature to what's already in the product lengthy name? I'm not sure anymore.

Outdoor Indoor WiFi Outlets 10A Waterproof IP44, Compatible with Apple HomeKit Alexa Google Assistant SmartThings

  • I just bought some smart outdoor LED string lights and I need a way to power them (no outdoor power points). any ideas on how to best run this outside?

    • -1

Negative. Whatever you do DIYA it will be dangerous.

  • I use this for my pool and patio lights and I am happy with it.

  • What is an "ATL price"?

    • +1

      All Time Low

    • Authority to Leave? ;)

  • Are the sockets independently switchable on the unit? I only see one switch on the photo. My use case would be one socket automated (timed from home assistant) and one socket local control.

  • The normal 2 pack wifi plugs, any got experience with if they block the other plug socket, and how they go on home assistant?

    • +4

They work great on home assistant. They are huge though and block the sockets either side.

    • Looks like you'll need this HACS integration to get it to work. Incls support for this model (MSS620).

      • Thanks. Will hold out as still want to put 2 side by side

        • +1

I bought a set of left and right double adapter's this allows me to get 3 including the smart socket from a regular 2 socket gpo

  • Is this product zigbee compatible? Since its compatible with homekit and smartthings

    • No they’re strictly wifi but you can trigger them with Zigbee using HomeAssistant

      • Sorry didn't understand your comment..
If the product is strictly wifi, how can i trigger them with zigbee?

        • +1

Sorry you can use another Zigbee device to trigger the on/off of the plug. If that’s what you wanted?

  • paid $59 last week :(

  • Does it have energy monitoring?

    • Doesn't look like it. There's no mention of energy monitoring from reading the product page on amazon, meross's website product page and the manual linked at the bottom of that page.
I'd love to be proven wrong though, energy monitoring would be fantastic.

      • +1

the outdoor plug doesnt have an energy monitor…

        • Thanks for confirming.
I could easily emulate it in home assistant by measuring the load with one of my other sockets first, then make a template sensor to emit the value when the socket is on.

  • I have one of these connected outside to bring some HomeKit smarts to some garden lights…paid more than sale price….they keep dropping out though in a good wifi area even after a firmware update… YMMV

    • +2

I’ve found this is due to DHCP on the router side. Usually it’s fine, but if you set a static IP you may find them more stable.

  • Thanks, grabbed this for the heat pump and the $26 indoor 2 pack for power monitoring.
