Those portable 4G devices have a pretty average radio in them (They have a "CAT 4" modem in them meaning dont expect to get advertised speeds).
Cheapest option is to get a Technicolour version of the Telstra Smart Modem (which can be hacked to make it more useful). Should set you back $10-20. Fastest option is something like a Huawei B618 (CAT 11?) / B818 (CAT 19?) for about $50 on market place.
