Just to highlight, Stock from Optus with vendor locked firmware as per description.

    • That's odd, I don't think Optus ever sold it as the DSL-AX82U, but as the DSL-AX5400…

While the hardware is the same and I believe it can be flashed to the DSL-AX82U firmware with some effort, they probably shouldn't advertise the wrong model number. (At least they mention that it's on Optus firmware though)

      • Yeah it can be “unlocked” but it requires some time and effort. There’s a long whirlpool forum post that teaches you how to do that and you can then flash Merlin firmware to it as well.

Avoid spur.tech, I purchased a hard drive from them years ago and it failed within it's warranty period (< 3 years), they refused to do anything about it because eBay had supposedly screwed them over. Happy to provide chat transcripts of this dodgy seller.

    • Haven't dealt with them specifically but have always had bad experienced with these kind of grey market dealers in electronics

    • Agreed, I enquired about a different router that was "opened - never used". It also happened to come in non retail packaging and also flashed with Merlin-based (but not actually Merlin) third party firmware.

They replied that actually the "physical condition" was "close to new" and that any possible damage would be to the Asus logo.

So obviously they are selling a product that has been well used and at the same time they (or the previous user) needed to hide the Asus logo during use.

Clearly doesn't fit a reasonable understanding of the item condition, and hence any other item they sell (except possibly retail new items) are suspect.

    • Wasn't aware they have a bad rep, thanks for posting

    • Typical take your money and run away

  • any other vdsl modems out there thats better than what asus can offer?

I would rather pay extra $80 to binglee for new one… And less hassle

  • I have one lying around since upgraded to mesh.
Thinking to flash it to merlin fw but have not got time.

DM me if you need one.

  • These units aren't even refurb, They are just getting Optus stock and putting custom firmware on it and selling it as the model they "technically" have the internals for.
There is actually no proper refurb work being done, No mention at all from what i have read on the descriptions.

They really are no different to buying a unit from Gumtree/marketplace for $200

    • Source?

Warranty speaks like it is indeed Asus warranty (terms are identical), good luck with consumer law though… I'd expect a router that costs this much to last 3-5 years; not 1.

Edit: The ones you speak of say 'opened - never used, ie https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/333771100782

"Opened Never used" and yet it has custom firmware on it… Must have been magic to get firmware on it without using it.
