Still a great game, and should be the one to play first (and finish at least the main story), before diving into TotK.
Playing TotK first will make it harder to get into BotW, since once you get used to the many interface and quality of life upgrades in TotK, it's tough to suddenly go without. The difference in controls and skill usage will also mess with your muscle memory.
It can be done, as I only went back and finished Ballard of the Champions after already starting TotK, and it didn't take me too long to adapt.
Just something to be aware of.

- There are still plenty of people who have never played BotW before.
- While not strictly necessary, knowledge of the story and characters in BotW gives some of the developments in TotK more impact.
- Familiarity with the world of Hyrule in BotW makes it easier to find/unlock some secrets in TotK.
- There are saved game bonuses that carry over from BotW to TotK.
- BotW is still a great game on its own merit, even if TotK is an upgrade in almost every aspect.
I want more people to share the terror of being chased across Hyrule by Guardians.
