Skip the Australian release. It's the only 4k version of Parasite in the world without a Dolby Atmos Track. Having watched this with Atmos for the first time recently after watching it about 7 times prior on the standard Madman Blu-ray, I can tell you it is worth it and adds significantly to the experience

Also, can't be 100% certain, but due to this version being published by Universal, there's a chance the included standard Blu-ray will work here as well. Universal discs are generally region-free in my experience. (Update: blu-ray.com suggests the standard Blu-ray is region locked so YMMV)

Saw it recently. Good movie but 7 times? Wow lol

    • +3

I think I've seen it somewhere between 7-10 times tbh

Now that I've posted this I'm thinking I might watch again soon ๐Ÿ‘€

      • Do you have goldfish memory? ;)

        Good way to save money.

I just really like it and appreciate its execution. I still pick up on new, subtle details each time that I missed the time before.

At least it makes a nice change from people bitching about physical media.

        • +1

          This feels out of context…

        • +2

Better than the usual "You can tell the difference between FHD and UHD unless you're 7 inches from the screen" smoothbrains.

  • PAL version currently $14 at JB hi-fi if bought with another eligible "2 for $40" 4K Bluray (which stacks with the 30% off, making it $14 each)

    • +5

As mentioned in the post, the Madman version (which is our Australian release) is the only 4k version to my knowledge in the world without a Dolby Atmos track.

I personally have the UK release from Curzon which includes the 4k, Blu-ray and b+w Blu-ray. The Atmos track on the 4k is a huge improvement on the standard Blu-ray from Madman that I watched previous times.

      • I can get the Madman 4k one for $9, what audio encoding is it? DTS MA?

        • I think it is. Just 5.1.

If that works for you, the more power to you. I just personally feel it's a weird, kinda shitty oversight from Madman that I don't care to support. If other countries had the same limitations, sure. I just don't understand why we're specifically limited in this case

          • @Ninternet: Saw a pic of back on eBay DTS hd ma 5.1

            • @FeZZa21: I would assume it at least has hdr10, but honestly wouldn't be surprised if Madman somehow fumbled that too.

International versions have HDR10/10+, but no Dolby Vision if that's helpful at all

              • @Ninternet: Yeah only mentions hdr so likely no hdr+ like overseas version

Arthouse films, and films that verge towards arthouse sentiments such as Parasite and (to a lesser extent) EEAAO, rely on subjective introspection and emotional resonance with the events on display that aren't explicitly explained in the movie.

Call me pretentious for that sentence, I don't care, but Parasite has very clear and obvious critiques of capitalism and class inequality. If you have ever experienced or felt the injustice of this system in your own life - or seen others struggle with this - you'll find something to connect with. If not, this may just appear to be a vaguely interesting crime-thriller-drama like many others, but that isn't its point.

On top of that, the cinematography, sound design and editing are all executed to perfection. The symbolism and metaphors are plentiful and subtle. I could keep going, because this is my favourite movie of all time.

You don't have to love it, but don't word it like there's something wrong with the movie itself.

        • +2

You don't have to be defensive about a subject you raised yourself?

            • -2

@souths123: Go talk to those people then. I think you're in the wrong place

              • +8

@Ninternet: No he's in the right place and you don't get to shoo others out of here.

Maybe you need to step out of your echo chambers and converse with others with opposing views.

If we all think alike then someone isn't thinking.

        • +6

I loved this film, but I wouldn't downvote someone who expresses an opinion on a film in a civil/polite way.

Looking forward to the day when this film drops to $10 at JB Hi-Fi.

        • +3

You said "I have no idea what the hype is about this movie" and @Ninternet tried to explain what the hype is, including technical details and not only "what it was about". If you didn't want a reply, you shouldn't have posted a comment.

Lots of people prefer Nescafe blend 43 over some freshly roasted beans too ;)

      • "…but Parasite has very clear and obvious critiques of capitalism… "

lol a critique from what perspective? A socialist utopian one?

      • +3

I'm not sure it's him who is getting defensive.
You don't like anyone having a different opinion than you on this film.
People can dislike something that you like and that's ok man. He was honestly very polite with his approach as well

      • It may be a good piece of cinematography, but the emotive socialist message is very flawed.

While the capitalist system has its share of issues, empirical evidence suggests that it's the best way of lifting the greatest number of people out of poverty, given the alternatives.

        • I love mixing my art with empirical evidence regarding the justification of capitalism. Thanks so much ๐Ÿ˜Š

@Ninternet: I can tell, and that those books you've linked are a real treasure of subtle commentary on the art form ๐Ÿ™

            • @elektron: Lol. I didn't even realise there were books. I just googled the Bong Joon Ho quote for context ๐Ÿ˜…

I agree EEAAO sucksss. Parasites good though

  • Great movie

  • Is this a movie about bugs?

    • +2

      Yes.
      SPOILERS AHEAD
There is a scene where a bug is flicked from a table early in the film.

There is also a scene featuring bugspray.

      • +2

        Interesting. Thanks

    • The parasite refers to the main antagonist/protagonist (depending on perspective, although I'd say antogonist) of the film. It's a decent watch but once was enough for me.

      • The parasite refers to the main antagonist/protagonist (

Not really. The parasite refers to multiple people in the movie, including the rich family, and questions who the real parasite is.

        • Hmmm does it though.. it's definitely a different take.. parasite tends to leach off your healthy cells in the body. And similarly the main antagonist leeching off the wealthy and then extending the parasite effect to the rest of the his fam.

I'd like to hear your perspective

          • +3

@maverickjohn: It's the director's explanation, and honestly that was the only interpretation I could think of when I finished watching the movie:

Bong said "Because the story is about the poor family infiltrating and creeping into the rich house, it seems very obvious that Parasite refers to the poor family, and I think that's why the marketing team was a little hesitant. But if you look at it the other way, you can say that rich family, they're also parasites in terms of labor. They can't even wash dishes, they can't drive themselves, so they leech off the poor family's labor. So both are parasites."

            • +1

              @bio: Hahaha good point.
I saw the first perspective but reading that I can see how the alternative perspective is also viewed as parasitic.. it's more on the human race rather than the household

    • Yep itโ€™s Disneyโ€™s live action adaptation of A Bugโ€™s Life.

  • +7

It's an ok movie.. I'm honestly not sure why it is as popular as it is.
The deal itself is good though. It's just the movie is an ok movie.
From a Korean film perspective, I've seen more entertaining films than this. Even Train to Busan was more enjoyable and I'm not a zombie film person.
If you guys like Korean films, you should watch Ballerina. Very good John Wick /Kill Bill esque film.

    • +1

Awesome. Thanks where can I find them to watch?

    • Art Vs entertainment.

I thoroughly enjoy Train to Busan as well

    • +1

If you guys like Korean films, you should watch Ballerina. Very good John Wick /Kill Bill esque film.

Lol, I had no idea there is also a Korean movie called Ballerina. The upcoming (2024) Ballerina movie is actually a spinoff from the John Wick universe.

      • I just googled this.. that's so interesting.. I can't wait for that !!!

      • I like dubs. I need to be able to look at my phone, laptop, and Nintendo Switch at the same time as watching a movie.

      • You just came in here to tell everyone you didn't get it/like it. Maverickjohn added more context and shared appreciation for other movies that people like.

This one isn't that big of a headscratcher

  • +3

I didn't realise the Madman version was different to the US release, thanks for the heads up.
PS Past Lives is a Beautiful Korean / American movie to look out for.

    • +2

Doesn't seem we're even getting a Blu-ray release of Past Lives here. UK will be in a few days though!

  • +1

This post itself became Parasite II show.

  • If I didn't already own the movie on Blu Ray I would of bought this because I'm stopping double dipping on movies anymore

    • Good for you! It can get difficult with collecting to feel urged to constantly buy the same movie on newer formats.

Then again, you could always move your existing Blu-ray on to someone else?

  • +1

I agree that Parasite is a great movie, but how does Dolby Atmos add to the experience? This is not Top Gun: Maverick where Atmos would absolutely enhance the experience.

    • +1

Sounds like you haven't seen it (with Atmos). Atmos adds to any movie when done right. You can read the review in the description if you care to.

Definitely a step up from the Madman Blu-ray regardless

  • Any suggestions for a good quality, good value (sub-$500) region-unlocked BluRay player with 4K and Atmos to watch it on?

The advice on players seems to be hit-and-miss. Some internet reports say the Sony UBP-X700 can region-switch, others say that this only works with certain hardware revisions. It seems difficult to find an affordable, guaranteed region-free player that has a competitive feature-set.

Region-free DVD players were common in Australia after the ACCC ruled region encoding was anti-competitive. However, when BluRay players rolled around, everyone forgot about that and region locking came back.

    • +1

You can attribute a bit of the blame to Sony for Blu-ray region locking.

As for players, Panasonic ub-820 is considered the 'best' bang for buck 4k player, but to get one that is region free for blu rays you'll have to pay a premium or look at aftermarket modifications.

In saying that, the ub-820 has a trick that can 'unlock' many, but not all, region A discs. Works for my criterion Blu Rays I've tried, but not on the Lionsgate American Psycho Blu-ray that came with my 4k.

      • That all sounds like a bit of a hassle.

I think it would be sensible to get a UK version of Parasite that will work on any Australian player, rather than opt for the US version.

        • You know that all 4k blu-rays are region-free though, right? I thought we were talking about the standard Blu-ray that comes with it.

  • Any of you rich folks still hire an inhouse housekeeper after seeing this movie?

    • Head to the basement you will find your answer

      • I'm not rich so I don't have a basement
