How Does This eBay Scam Work and Why Does eBay Allow It?

S23 Ultra 6.8" 8GB+256GB Smartphone Android 12 Unlocked 5G LTE Mobile Phones AU

Selling brand new S23 Ultra for $156. I'm not tech savvy at all so please explain how the seller is selling for such a low price and how their scam works?

A quick Google search comes up with some buyers saying they got scammed because after receiving the phone after two weeks it's reported as stolen and you can't use the phone anymore?

Buyers who can't read are the problem. Seller did not mention it is a Samsung.

    • Oh i didn't notice the lack of Samsung. So the specs for this knockoff phone would be completely false yes?

      • +1

There is nothing to suggest the specs are false, it's just likely greatly exaggerated to meet those specs so the experience will not be good.

No reason to buy this phone. There are plenty of great phones on Ozb for a similar price or still affordable. Have a search.

      • as plmko said, the specs might not be false. you can get second hand 8gb ram/256 rom teared off old phones for very cheap. similarly, the screen might be some rubbish 6.8 inch chinese screen with very low resolution. same goes for the camera. while it meets the advertised specs, the experience would be horrible. It's a typical rip off unbranded made in china phone, lots of such phones are sold in china for ~$50-$80.

    • @helpme - more victim blaming for you and I'm not involved on this occasion.

lmao I'm gonna agree with the seller here. I'll say they're misleading but they're also not pricing it at S23 ultra prices nor making that claim.

    • +1

To be fair, the seller does openly specify the brand. It's called "unbranded". :)

Yep the buyers are the problem. Not the seller with intentionally misleading products.

it could be a genuine Sansung .

I know a genuine Panaphonics when I see it. And look, there's Magnetbox and Sorny!

  • Apple products are the same, they really need to be "unlocked" from a link to an Apple account first so you can "lock" it into your own account. Otherwise it can be turned into a paperweight by the person whose account it is actually linked to. Afaik new Apple devices can't be cracked so they really are paperweights unless the actual owner chooses to unlock them for you.

Probably pays to get a sense if the seller is the actual owner or not, and to connect the device to your own account right away while you're still in a PayPal protection window.

    What could go wrong

  • when you look at "about phone" in setting it will show those specs.

when you check the phone using an app like CPU X (which surveys the actual hardware/software) then you'll get the real specs.

    e.g. 2gb ram, MT6572, android 10.

it's easy to program the phone to show false specs.

  • S23 Ultra for $156.

Scam 2023 ultra, item matches description /case closed.

  • Everything else aside the thing to bear in mind is that eBay China have a free hand in what they allow to be listed and it is much more lenient than Western eBay sites.

  • 49 sold dear god 🤡

  • I'm impressed they managed to squeeze 78 Million rear cameras on it, but think this multiple camera thing may be getting a bit out of hand.

  • 51 sold from 17 November. eBay Item purchase history. How many of these expecting a real Samsung? All of them?
