Genuinely curious as to why someone would pay for this compared to the free uBlock Origin…

    • +9

Ublock origini works on browsers, this works on all devices and apps regardless. With you own account you can whitelist and blacklist as required. You can also have multiple dns so you can apply different profiles e-g kids. This also works on any network weather be wifi home or 4g cellular. You can also use this as DOH within browser e-g firefox to have your dns policies and anonimity on any public or work network. Plenty of use cases. I use nextdns paid along with ublock origin. They can work side by side.

      • -2

Exactly, why pay when there is no guarantee Utube/groogle won't block it in the near future???

        • What do you mean? how can youtube, google or any other service block your dns?

    • Does unlock origin block ads from windows 11 apps?

      • uBlokc is a web browser add-on

      • No

    • +1

Add in AdGuard or PiHole etc. Since they're more a DNS level ad blocker.

      • Sites are starting to adapt to this. The more sophisticated just cease working without a DNS exemption in place.

Then there are the mobile apps that are poorly or intentionally maliciously designed to keep spamming until they resolve a dns. Looking at you reddit app.

  • Isn't this free as plugins on most modern browsers? Even the End Point Protection / Antivirus/malware stuff has this built in now.

    • +1

Yes but this version also works on mobile to block ads at a device level, which is great.

I my experience there are still a few apps that still shows ads, like IMDB and YouTube. It works well to block annoying ads in games etc.

      • Blokada also works. Also free.

        • I don't think it's as feature rich as Adguard, though. The ability to whitelist apps is handy.

If you don't need that then Adguard has no real advantage over free software.

      • -1

I bought this last time as i wanted to block ads across all apps on my unrooted android phone (for desktop i use ublock origin), used it for 2 weeks and uninstalled, now I'm using AdAway as a local vpn to get rid of ads.

This app would give me troubles with gumtree, where it would also block pictures inside the listings, slow down eBay app, give me troubles with Amazon app, wouldn't block ads on YouTube, and Instagram app would sometimes not load at all.

        • I am using it for around an year continously. I had no such problems as you mentioned with gumtree, ebay, amazon etc.

          • @Family420au: Do you have any recommendations for the settings to use? I was using the default settings, and then i tried disabling and enabling different lists to get it working, but the results were inconsistent (would work only sometimes)

      • Vanced doesn't require root and will solve your YouTube woes. Lets you enable the premium features for free too, since they're client-side anyway. You can even remove the entire comments section.

        • Vanced hasn't been working for awhile now, or do you have a workaround?

          • +1

@highon2str: New pipe is also pretty good, misses a couple of things but atleast zero ads

          • @highon2str: Sorry, I always say Vanced, I mean Revanced. My bad.

    • What about when you're not using browser i.e apps?

  • +2

There is difference between plug-ins and app. Paid version work as a vpn and block ads in apps whereas plug-ins work only in browsers.

    • I've had this for a few months and am trying to figure it out myself, but I don't think it includes the VPN. Adguard also doesn't play nicely with my existing VPN.

      • Yes I have faced this problem as well. Due to os limitation only one vpn service can be used at a time. So, when I enable my other vpn, adguard disabled automatically and once I closed the other vpn, it starts by itself.

  • Just stopped using "AdBlock Pro" on iOS because it was breaking Google login.

    Recommendations on other free alternates?

    • +2

      uBlock Origin on Firefox

And set up a PiHole DNS server when at home.

      • And you can VPN back to home so you can always use pihole or pfblocker

        • +3

That could be somewhat of a stretch for the average user to setup pi-hole and then a VPN to be loop back into your home network for browsing.

That is where something like AdGuard comes in, simple solution for those that need it or aren't tech savvy or have the right network setup to be able to do all the above.

          • +1

@jollster101: True - Wireguard pretty easy IMHO though and tailscale apparently even easier.

      • Pi-Hole works great for PC / Laptop use if I'm right.

Can you configure Pi-Hole to also block ads when using apps and games on your phone….if you could that would only work when on your home network though I imagine?

My understanding is that AdGuard can do that on Android and IOS mobile devices when it is installed.

      • I don't think Firefox on iOS is able to do plugins, unless something has changed recently?

    • Wipr, $3 iOS + $3 MacOS Safari.

    • Yeah, literally the post you're commenting on: AdGuard

      • free

        • It has a free tier?

    • I just use the free service. It's as easy as setting your DNS to dns.adguard.com.

On Android in Network settings you can do it as "Private DNS".

On a home network you should be able to configure it in the router for all devices.

  • How would this compare to running pihole at home? On mobile away from home be a different story, but for majority of use at home?

    • +1

I do have adguard home running which is similar to pihole, but again adguard app works to block ads inside apps. Also it works as a firewall, so you can block internet access to an app, block data usage for an app when screen is locked etc.

    • +2

on a mobile away from home, you could still connect back via VPN to be able to use your firewall and pihole you may have running at home.

      • +2

Wouldn’t that use more data and slower?

      • +1

I feel like it's easier just to pay the $25 than configure/manage/deal with a VPN back and forth just to use the internet on your phone haha

        • Each to their own, if its just add blocking and your are not into networking I can see where this is a convenient way.
But in a bigger picture, where you have a NAS or home sever you would like to access remotely its just part of an overall solution. To a point where I have a small travel router setup which will broadcast the same WiFi when we are somewhere else instead of configurating each device to connect to a new Wifi, and "VPN" back home with the kids having access to their stuff on the go. Also this way you can create you own "of security" when you connect to a network you don't know anything about.

          • @Olli: Do you know of a guide on setting up and using the whole thing?

            • @bheart: Probbaly depends what you plan on using as hardware but YouTube will be your friend

    • +1

I check Adguard logs after opening an app filled with ads. Then I block those ad urls from Adguard. Helps to finetune ad blocking.

    • PiHole and AdGuard Home are fairly comparable, and are network wide by using the "DNS sinkholing” method. This deal is for the Family service which seems to be install on individual devices. I think the Home service is free

  • +1

Self hosting adguard on my raspberry pi

  • -2

Definitely do not pay for this lol

  • +6

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Adguard/comments/fbrpgv/adguard_hom…

I hope this reddit thread will explain it clearly the difference between various types of adblocker.

  • Some ad blockers don't work with YouTube anymore.

    • +1

That is what Revanced is for….

    • I think extension of adguard premium works as I read it somewhere on the internet, but not 100% sure.

    • -4

Can confirm Adguard does not block YouTube ads. They suggest copying the video link and sharing with the Adguard app to bypass ads, but it's probably easier just to watch the bloody thing.

      • +1

Can confirm AdGuard does block YouTube ads.

        • @TheFreaK Through the method I mentioned? Or should it block ads played through the YouTube app? It doesn't work for me.

          • @Munkeyalan: AdGuard feeds through to Safari as an extension, just watch the videos in Safari.

          • +2

@Munkeyalan: I use brave browser it stops ads on YouTube.

        • Can you share your settings and phone os? I can't get this working on Android 14

  • On our Android phones, we use a DNS changer app which is a total life saver when browsing ad-ridden websites and most importantly gets rid of the ads on the BBC news app, including the 30s videos that play at the start of every news video!

One caveat is that for some reason, we've found that the app has to be first disabled for Google Photos backup to work.

    • +2

I prefer not to route all my data through a third party app & servers just to block ads. I use settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS. Both Adgaurd DNS and NextDNS give 300,000 free DNS lookups per account each month, and both have configurable blocklists.

    • That's one of the advantages of Adguard over a DNS changer - you can whitelist specific apps like Google photos, Cashrewards, etc.

  • I receive a warning from Cashrewards about using an ad blocker, even when I disable Adguard for the specific website I am visiting. Anyone else see this?

I ignore the warning, and usually Cashrewards does get picked up - but not always.

    • +1

On Android, I have whitelisted cashrewards app so the traffic for cashrewards is not routed through adguard and my cashback are tracked always.

    • +1

It uses more tracking than just the cashrewards dns, if you check the query log, they use other mechanisms it seems. They won't confirm either way what they do, and its likely to change over time anyway.

The safest way is to use the pause feature for 10min , activate your cashback, add to cart and purchase in that window of time. Check your click history in the cashback site.

    • I’ve set up a shortcut on iOS to open ShopBack and disable the VPN so I can’t forget - also removed the ShopBack app from the home screen and added the shortcut as an app icon so I can’t open the wrong one

  • Does anyone know how AdGuard when installed as an app on your android phone interacts with other VPN software the you may use as well……thinking something like NordVPN for example.

Given AdGuard sets up a VPN, I assume that messes with Nord as you could only have one VPN running at a time.

Or is there a workaround to that?

    • Check my comment above, two vpn will not work at the same time.

      • I thought this was the case.

Its quite a limitation as I would have thought most people would pay for something like Nord to use most, if not all of the time. Its a trade off then if there is no way to trick the OS into having two VPN connections.

        • Yeah it's not fun. But I only use a vpn for few minutes on my Android, are you keeping the vpn on for a long time?

          • +1

@Family420au: Typically I would as its paid for. That said I'm not doing anything that means I need to keep it on all the time.

            Food for thought.

            • @jollster101: Nice, as I turn on my vpn when I've too visit certain website then close it immediately after that. However, I do use my vpn 24/7 on my server using guacamole and deluge.

  • dns.adguard.com

  • Just bought this and installed, thanks OP.

Lifetime subscription across 3 devices (desktop, iphone and ipad) for $20.

Bit of pfaffing about was needed.

  • Can see that this works on devices, but would it work on a Chromecast?

  • +1

You could set the dns manually to Adguard dns in your phone, pc or even on your routers and it’s free. Setting dns manually on router will block the ads on all devices connected to the router.

  • +1

For device level ad block, would it block the video ads on Facebook?

    • Interested to know as well

    • It does not unfortunately

      • Do you know any that does for iOS?

  • I'm always wary of adblockers being the reason why my cashbacks (cashrewards/shopback/topcashback) don't track sometimes.

The above sites always state that adblockers must be turned off….is that true?

    • You can whitelist apps from adguard and you are good to go.

  • I recommend Adguard Home (they are not the same).
    https://adguard.com/en/adguard-home/overview.html

Totally free, no limit on devices

    • They are for different use cases and not everyone can setup server for adguard home.

      • Same use cases but yes not everyone will want to set up the server.

Commenting to inform those that may be interested.

Is its ozbargain after all and you can't beat free.

  • Does it include getting a private adguard DNS?

  • +1

Okay so I'm getting mixed message here because adguard only works on two mobile browser: yandex and samsung browser

But then people also say that it blocks in-app ads? Does that even make sense? Or are we talking about adguard home here

  • Family plan is sold out.

    • Hopefully it will be available soon, it was out of stock couple days ago as well.

    • It's back in stock, got one, thanks OP!

  • Would this block ads such as phone games or between manga chapters?

    • Not sure about manga but it does block ads in games.
