130

Not just for helicopter pilots, Richard Wagner's 4-opera Ring Cycle weaves an epic, multi-generational saga of gods, heroes and monsters. For a limited time, the full 16-hour recording across 14 CDs is half price - $100, plus $5 for delivery. Works out to $7.50 per CD, or $6.56 per hour.

For those who don't have the stamina for the whole performance, the individual operas (2-4 CDs each) and the highlights (2 CDs) are also reduced. For those who disdain physical media, the highlights are available as a download for $15 (though not reduced).

Each opera is provided on hybrid SACD, yielding CD-quality sound in regular players or higher quality in SACD players (and some Blu-Ray players). They come with "handsome hardbound volume with colour production photos, essays on the opera and the history of the Ring in Adelaide together with a full libretto." They were recorded in 2004 by the State Opera of South Australia, conducted by Asher Fisch.

My first deal, so please be gentle.

  • I quite enjoyed watching the Ring Cycle. But his 4.5 hour opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, was hard to get through.

Most would be familiar with the famous "Ride of the Valkyries" from the Cycle. Used in many movies, such as when the helicopters blasted it out in "Apocalypse Now". Powerful music!

Shared an old house with an aspiring actor years ago. He warned when he was going to play the Ring Cycle - for hours.
Heard it from the overgrown garden - quite enjoyed it floating through the trees. Listened to some of it on a ferry ride down the Rhine.
But couldn't imagine sitting through a full multi hour performance.

    • Did the aspiring thespian's career end up sufferin from the curse of the Nibelungen!? 😮

He did well, without invoking the Curse.
Won awards for his stage performances. Great guy.
But glad he gave us warnings so we could escape! He always played the Cycle full volume.

Also used very well in The Blues Brothers. Car chase scene with the Nazis that results in the Nazi's car "flying" through the air.
