Pre-ordered this at $64 and was anxiously waiting for it to arrive because I wasn't optimistic I'd like it. It's great. Part way through now and really enjoying. It's very easy, very repetitive, and very simple—but for some reason it works.

Just got this at Big W for $52.10 using the following:

    It’s $69 with XDEC2023 10% off Woolies extra rewards = $62.10 then got spend $50 get 2000 Woolies/Big W points which is about $10.

  • I've never understood why Nintendo games are so much cheaper in Australia compared to the US.

    • All games are, Nintendo games do generally hold their value from the initial price though

    • +4

My theory is that base game prices are determined sometime before the release of a console, based on exchange rates at that point in time. When the Switch's game prices were determined for Australia at the time (I suspect around 2016 leading up to the console's release), the exchange rate was 0.75. If you take the $60 USD base price, that becomes $80 AUD, and then add our 10% GST, it becomes $90 AUD - essentially the price of Zelda: BOTW at launch.

Since then, our exchange rate has suffered but our game prices have remained static, and to add to that, Nintendo Australia has been doing 2 price tiers since the beginning - their premium games like Zelda and Smash have $90 AUD RRPs, with a 2nd tier at $80 AUD - Mario Kart and Super Mario Odyssey feature here alongside many others. Nintendo America has largely stuck to solely $60 USD as their price for their big hitters for a long time, but recently added a $70 USD tier for Zelda: TotK, and so the difference becomes really stark now, especially when our retailers have been engaging in price wars leading up to game releases (Amazon especially).

But…when I look at how PS5 game prices jumped considerably from PS4 titles (typical $100 AUD RRP for PS4 titles to $125 AUD RRP for PS5 titles), I do wonder how big the jump will be for Switch to Switch 2 game prices.

      • I would have to agree with your assessment, I did find it strange that TOTK was $70USD but largely stuck around $74 here at launch for most retailers, especially when the physical carts would add to the price vs discs. Just hope the next Nintendo console games price jump isn't in the PS5/XSX realm.

Next gen console prices are insane at full price, I'll generally wait for prices to drop to the $40-70 range, or play via Gamepass if it's available.

    • US has more poor people, so in order to sell as many copies as possible the market has priced games a little lower. I mean probably, who knows.

    • +1

Not sure, but it used to be the other way around until the value of our dollar dropped but physical game prices didn't change all that much. The console digital game stores are still a rip off, so I'm guessing it's more down to brick and mortar stores treating games as loss leaders (or at least, low margin) here due to an overall lower volume of sales compared to the US. This then creates competition, which is great for us.

I do dread the day that physical games go away fro good though…

A true Ozbargainer plays the SNES version for free on their Powkiddy… Me-wow!

    • Is it just a remake?

    • You may as well just hack the switch and play all games for free if you going to take the emulation route

    • I only play original snes modded region unlock

I wouldn't even pay this, it's a 10-15 hour game, not the best value for your money.

    • +5

$5 per hour isn't worth it? People pay $20 to watch a 2 hour movie.

      • +2

$20? Where are you living? $31.50 for a regular Hoyts ticket near me.

      • -7

so by that logic should people pay $1000 for BG3?

        • lmao you have reading problem ? he was comparing the $/hour value

          • -6

@parkaa: 'lmao' you have a comprehension problem?

            • @radien: nah you do mate if u think all games should be priced at $5/hr

              • -6

@parkaa: If you're that dumb to think I was the one that implied that, I'm not going to waste my time with this interaction anymore. Maybe after a few re-reads you'll understand. :)

                • +2

@radien: i suggest you read what you typed too.

                • +1

@radien: Have you found China yet with that hole that you're digging?

I wouldn't even pay this, it's a 10-15 hour game, not the best value for your money.

You equated that $64 for a 10-15 hour game is not good value, drawing the response in comparison that

$5 per hour isn't worth it? People pay $20 to watch a 2 hour movie.

Meaning that people pay a higher $/hour for other leisure activities and deem it reasonable and worthy of their time. You follow this up with

so by that logic should people pay $1000 for BG3?

This makes no sense, because no one here is selling or buying BG3 for $1000, nor is anyone saying it is worth that much.

    • +1

      You're negged but 100% correct.

It's a gorgeous remake of a classic game, but $20 or $30 would be more appropriate for a SNES game a third of the size of the more recent Paper Mario titles.

(and only if you believe a remake of a decades-old title with very little cost to Nintendo shouldn't be cheaper per hour than modern new games.)

  • +2

the same same is also available (for quite a few other titles as well) at JB Hi-Fi!

  • Why does nobody decent sell this on ebay

  • I'm sure the game is entertaining, but for some reason the front cover irks me. Why is it a pure white background? It just looks unfinished and weird…
