Recommend Me a Decent nbn Fixed Wireless Broadband Plan

So I have been told that the contractor that Opticomm used to install our FTTP internet has gone into receivership and the project is dead in the water. Looks like I'm stuck with fixed wireless NBN for a little while longer.

I have been with Tangerine I was wondering if there are companies out there that could potentially be more reliable/faster on fixed wireless. I understand the the technology has its limitations but I would like to make the best of it if possible. Our 6 month discount with Tangerine is up this month so we'd be paying $79.90 for technically 25/5 NBN speeds (according to the CIS).

Would other companies be actually any faster?

Also we have the EERO 6+ Router provided by Tangerine, I'm assuming we'd have to pay a subscription to use that router now that we're moving away from Tangerine (from memory it was included in the price). I'm not too familiar with the EERO Router.

    For Fixed Wireless, not always.

You might be better with Starlink. Cost you $140 a month (plus hardware), but more likely to get 200/20. Examples at What speeds can I expect from Starlink?.

Who knows based on what you have heard how long FTTP will take to get installed.

    • Unfortunately Starlink is way out of my budget at this stage. Great idea though…

    • Be aware of the 112ms ping times I'm seeing at my clients though. Not exactly ideal for gaming.

Fixed wireless seems to be about 27ms.

      As you were.

Happy with ours and we're still on Gen1 hardware. With ABB.

    • ABB don't service our area (Logan Reserve)

I had Optus 5g for about a year when I moved to a new place and it was very decent and very reliable. Of course that was before the customer data leak and other recent Optus issues. Only problem I had at the time was the occasional lag spike made gaming a bit annoying. I was also just a few hundred m away from the tower which helped I'm sure.

    • 5G from Optus or Telstra is rubbish. I posted about that as well recently.

I had ABB FW for years with exceptional data service. Cancelled and tried more with the CBA offer with the mindset that if it's shit I'll just go back to ABB. More have been just as reliable and I've stayed 2ith them no issue for the last 6 months (and saving $30pm).

    • More looks to be owned by Tangerine, so it would be using the similar infrastructure no?

Ahhh bugger, I missed that minor detail. Perhaps try ABB for a month to see if you can get improved reliability and speed. They might set a new benchmark for you or simply prove that the FW in your area is limited by NBN network or mother nature.

        • Also ABB doesn't supply service in our area, you'd think we're in the stick or something. I think I'll be going with Exetel unless someone trys to stop me.

@richadam: How odd. I live in the middle of b*$tf%@k nowhere and never had issues signing up.

            • @Muzeeb: My only thought was that as the area was slated to get Opticomm installed, they only did the bare minimum Fixed Wireless install just to cover the gap.

But that gap looks to be more permeant than anything now that the project is currently dead.

Do you get a good Telstra signal? If so, go for mobile broadband. Look at Exetel's data SIM deals (they use telstra).

    FW is garbage.

If you can afford it get Starlink. If you are lucky enough to have 4G / 5G get that instead. FW is very flaky especially when it rains.

      As per my other comments:
      - Unfortunately, Starlink isn't in the budget.
      - 4G/5G isn't great indoors with us relying on WiFi calling to make calls in the house

So we're kind of stuck with FW until Opticomm get their act together and finish the installation project.

    • FW is not always garbage.

I'm very happy with my rock steady 82Mbps at 27ms ping. I've had thunderstorms cause ZERO issues. Never any issues at all in fact.

You're making a very generic statement that simply isn't true. I'm not a new user either have had it since 2018.

Starlink seems to net about 160Mbps around my area but at 112ms ping for an extra $60.
4G/5G is very location dependent especially rural but Optus do some good unlimited plans.

      • You're making a very generic statement that simply isn't true

I guess we're both making generic statements that might be true for each but generally not true.

NBN is garbage which is quite true.

        • I can agree that NBN in general is garbage but dealing a lot with commercial NBN the 1G fibre options are actually very decent.

But yes, most of the delivery options of NBN should have been fibre from the start. Thank you Mr "Internet" Malcolm Turnbull. This "free fibre upgrade" is actually costing a decent amount of money whcih we all end up paying (contributing to) in the end.

No you don't have to pay for eero Plus.

I'm with FlipTV for FW-NBN. Very happy with the service and support.

  • i have just signed up with exetel NBN 75 wireless plus. it is fast enough for me. only $54 a month for first 6 months.

    • This is what I'm leaning towards as well.

Vodafone 5G home internet. I signed up for it on black Friday for $55 per month and I am getting speeds of 250MBPS.
