10%-40% Discount on Velocity Points Purchases @ Points.com

130

Just got an email from Velocity. Good for those looking extra points urgently without breaching the T&C. Of course you could probably get a better deal from Classified (at your own risk).

Points Discount Rate
1,000 - 10,000 10%
11,000 - 50,000 20%
60,000 - 120,000 20%
130,000 - 250,000 40%

eg. 130,000 Points is now $1825.20 (normal price: $3041.99)

Edit: Note that the transaction is run by points.com, which is based in the US. Use a card with free intl transaction fee to avoid paying extra.

Good if you have a specific long haul business class redemption in mind and you can't churn credit cards. Not so good otherwise…

Depends where u r travelling, Aeroplan points maybe better to buy as more business class availability on SIA. Lower taxes as well

    • Can explain more? How do we get Aeroplan points, do we still redeem on SIA website?

Sign up Aeroplan. They are star alliance so when U search for sia routes U get almost full availability similar to Krisflyer but no first class

Wait for their bonus points. If U get lucky like me, I got targeted for 125% so cost me 1.7c/point.

    • I got charged recently for return business SIA to Siem Reap via velocity about $900 in rubbish fees and taxes, the full fare price you can get for about $4k, it’s such a scam , the booking before was to Europe with SIA and I paid $300 in fees and taxes

      • Even the infant fees are just Cad $25 one way or 2500 points. This makes it good value compared to paying 10% infant fare on most airlines

        • Infant fares vary with the FF program and not airline. We added an infant to a Singapore flight booked with Aeroplan and it cost 2500 pts, while if we had booked the same flight with Krisflyer, it would have cost 10% of the revenue fare, so close to $600.

At the time of booking most programs only charge an extra 10% of the points but some, like Velocity do not even charge anything extra for an infant.

    Quotes from Point Hacks:

Note that the transaction is run by points.com, which is based in the US. Chances are, you’ll get charged an international transaction fee even though the payment amount is in AUD.

Don’t get us wrong – the rates are quite expensive, and there’s usually little reason for you to consider buying those points. But if your next holiday hinges on topping up your balance pronto, then be sure to keep this strategy in mind.

    • Thanks - updated

    • Can confirm, bought some VA points previously and got stung by this.

Points Hack state that the offer is pretty good value for money if you are after buying points -

"The value per point gets better as you buy bigger amounts. Say you purchased 30,000 points with a 20% discount: each point would cost you 2.1c. However, if you buy a maximum of 250,000 points with a 40% discount, that drops the per-point price to 1.4c each. Not too bad now.
We currently value Velocity Points at 1.80 cents each. Where possible, try to get more than that value-wise when you redeem your points."

  • If I want to use this for Singapore Business Class (as I already have half the points needed) is it good value? Apologies for noob question I’m new to this. Until recently, I just saw planes as a way to get from point A to point B, but now getting older so wouldn’t mind going in relative comfort.

I won’t be flying until mid next year so can still afford to wait for a bit longer if needed.

    • Hard to answer with lack of points information you provided. To start with, is your desired flight currently being offered at good value? If the answer is no, then buying extra points would make it even worse. How does it compare if you were to purchase it without points at all?

can still afford to wait for a bit longer

Wait for what exactly? To gather extra points? Remember the flight that you wanted will not always be there (usually good deals would be gone quicker)

    • You need to check availability for next year…I did a look for SQ tickets and could only find reward ones in late Oct next year…personally I think they are good value for money with this discount given SQ business fares are about $3.5k for one person and you could get rewards seats using these points cheaper (in $ terms).

      1. Find Singapore Airlines cash flight you want
      2. Determine whether it is available as an award through Virgin Australia (SQ awards in business are not all that plentiful), and if so how much the carrier charges total
      3. Subtract carrier charges from cash flight
      4. Work out whether the cash you spend on the points plus the points (at a notional 1cpp) is less than the remaining cash price
      • Whilst I think the reward flight will be cheaper, the issue is availability at the time you want to travel…and peak times are hard to find seats…with reward seats, you need flexibility to move dates to get the seats or have some status with the airline which helps.
