damn found out on Black Friday you could get $100 credit back from $499 for the 256GB. I would probably wait around until that comes back.

price drop on the 256GB for those who were waiting on the larger storage model.
pretty sure this is an all time low for the 256GB, even before the price jack.

before price jack I remember it being $519 for the 256GB.

looks like $100 credit promo credit has applied to the 256GB model before.

Amazon GC applied both in 128gb and 256gb during BF Sales

    • my bad. I looked at previous deals here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/oculus-quest-2

and could find no mention of 256GB + $100 promo credit on any title or description so I thought it didn't apply. there was 256GB $789 - $200 promo credit, but that means you are still paying $589 after claiming credit.

$499 was also the lowest price I could find looking through those previous deals so I thought it was genuine all time low.

  • +3

It was $499 for 256GB + $100 amazon gift card during BF. Better hold up as it might happen again during boxing day.

    • where is that deal? no one posted it?

edit ok I think I found it now. this comment mentions 256GB being only $60 more. which lines up as $499 - $100 credit. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14588566/redir

      • Please hand in your OzB badge ;)

        • to be honest if I was posting that deal I would have put both storage options in the title and description. but that's just me. 😜

Still waiting for Quest 3 deal!

    <waitingskeleton.jpg>

    • +4

I heard that Quest 3 cost price estimate including R&D etc was very close to the $499 US selling price. like $467 or something.

with comments that Meta is making a tiny loss on every headset. I didn't expect any discount to happen on BF and I was right. not sure about the near future though.

    • Better not be a q3 sale now as got one for the daughter Xmas I was told from Amazon the q3 would be on sale and we would know this end of November but I went in chat and was told again there is no such sale.
I was hanging on hoping and waiting and after being told there is not I had to grab at full price as needed it for Xmas.
It’s still boxed and sealed obviously.

Remember the $47 meta credit for new users referred to purchase a headset still works for headsets purchased on amazon

    Go to this page https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/meta.com

Click 'random' and you get a random ozbargainers referral link.

To accept the referral set up an account. If you’re buying it as a gift and want them to get the meta credit, they should create the account.

When the account logs into the headset you purchased on amazon, youll get the credit.

You can get a tiny bit more off buying discounted amazon gift cards on cashrewards or shopback.
I don’t think you can get cashback on the headset itself at the moment as the category is at 0% on the cashback sites, but if that changed it should stack as well.

    • also if you don't buy anything after you set the headset up and leave it that way for awhile (maybe install a few free games), they offer you a targeted 15% off to 25% off code (* I don't know why it's different for some people) right in there in the headset menu. not sure if you still get it if you claim referral credit but worth a try.

      • 25% referral codes can be found for virtually anything via Meta-dog (aka Cat). Can't be used with other discounts though.

        • nah not talking about referral codes it's just a storewide code for meta store that encourages you to buy something. if you don't buy anything straight away it pops up one of the times you turn your headset on (maybe like a week later can't remember).

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah, I’m just saying there’s usually no need to wait for a 15 or 25% code when 25% codes are available for [almost?] everything already, and only one code can be used at a time. (Despite being automatic and account-specific, the referrals apply a “FRIEND” coupon code while targeted discounts apply OCULUS25 or something.)

    • Or if you use zip get $10 off $150 spend unless it’s finished now

  • i dont know anything about the current VR headsets but im kinda interested in getting into it; is this a good unit ? You dont need a powerful PC or anything i take it, it's standalone these days? Or should people wait for Meta Quest 3?

    • +6

The quest 3 is such a big improvement if you can wait I would wait.

    • +4

I have a Q2 and I really do enjoy it. It runs standalone and wireless, there's a relatively healthy third party accessory market that can improve comfort and fit and battery life, and you can still hook it up to a good PC and run PCVR games too. Recently Steam launched their own link app, which makes it a bit smoother to run Steam games on a Quest.

The Q3 is a jump, I would not pick up a Q2 for anything more than $300.

    • +1

Personally I would hold off on the basis that none of the current options tick all the boxes.

Quest 2 - relatively crappy FOV and lenses, dodgy PC tethering

Quest 3 - better lenses but still dodgy PC tethering (wireless with annoying requirements or crappy compressed/laggy USB rather than direct displayport)

Valve Index - appears to have been abandoned for the Australian market, out of date, nice lenses, resolution probably not great

PSVR2 - arguably the best affordable hardware but locked to PS5

Misc. Chinese options - all from smaller companies that may or may not exist or support it in future

I reckon we are 1-2 generations away from a really good option. Personally I am waiting for the PSVR2 to be hacked properly to work with PC, which would be the best solution.

If you don't care too much about image quality/latency and find the idea of wireless operation appealing the Quest 3 is probably the go.

      • +2

My experience with quest 3 has been great. Needs a good wifi network to airlink well (VD app is $20 and I think worth it over steam link/airlink wireless) but both pcvr and standalone the games are beautiful (For a great standalone no PC title red matter 2 is well worth a look) and generally smooth as butter, an odd stutter here or there but nothing game breaking and an impressive piece of kit

        • Don't you need your PC hardwired to the router for wireless, though? That's a major issue for a lot of people's setups, I would imagine.

          • +3

@caitsith01: There's only so much they can do to make the software better, the rest is on you to make sure your network is good.
Airlink doesn't need internet, if you really want, you could buy a separate router and plug it in next to your PC.
This would limit you to single player games though, but would definitely work.

            • @fratzhaus: I just wish they'd spent the extra $10 to have DisplayPort as the tethered option, then the Quest 3 would be almost perfect - wireless if you want it to be, but a proper tethered PC headset if you want that, at a third the current cost of a Valve Index

              • @caitsith01: Is there something wrong with using USB-C? using that tethered was pretty rock solid before airlink was a thing, and it is still supported

                • @fratzhaus: Basically it's lower bandwidth and higher latancy compared to DisplayPort. As a result of the lower bandwidth it also means they use image compression, although most users suggest this isn't noticeable in terms of picture quality.

            • +2

@fratzhaus: I haven't done it (I use a gaming laptop and can just sit it next to the router) but I see no reason why you couldn't have your PC wifi connected to your internet connection and your PC ethernet connected to a separate wifi router for airlink.

The PC is handling all the grunt work, so multiplayer etc should only need that device internet connected, the quest is basically just a remote display in this mode.

I may actually try this when I get back home, I have an old rt-68u sitting around dying to feel useful again.

EDIT: https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/s/vSMqE5COzh seems to confirm this method works well

              • @Beetleeater: Didn't even cross my mind to actively use 2 networks lol, nice solution

            • @fratzhaus: There should be a way to use Internet Connection Sharing or similar to still have access to the Internet via the PC’s built-in WiFi. TPLink Archer C6 or A6 apparently work well and are under AU$100.

          • @caitsith01: You don't need the PC to be hard wired, but it's recommended for optimal performance. I played through HL: Alyx with PC and headset both on WiFi.

256gb? What games run ok this any rom emulation?

    • +1

The 256gb is storage space, not RAM.

Yeah there’s a pretty good rom emulation scene, it can run android apps as well as some dedicated quest apps for emulation such as ppsspp psp emulation and Age of Joy which is an full vr arcade where you can play mame games in cabinets, both are free.

      • "The 256gb is storage space, not RAM."

I think they also thought 256GB was 256MB because 256GB is a lot of RAM lol. I mean 64GB is pretty standard these days for PC.

  • yeah I just picked up a quest 3 bit late to the party but with the new steam link app couldn't say no lol but the quest 2 when i had it from launch back when it was called teh OCULUS quest 2 was and still is brillant still the number 1 vr headset in the world with the most sold units.

  • +2

Just get the 3 it's leagues ahead. Kina like the jump between PS2 and 3

  • buy quest 3

  • Any thoughts on quest vs vr2?

    • Quest tbh. I find the third party accessories make it more comfortable to wear, there's no cable, and I can run pcvr games on it.

The tech in the PSVR2 is superior, but you're locked to ps5 games…

  • +2

Not sure why anyone would spend $500 on a Q2 when the much, much better Q3 is only another 300 bucks.

    • +2

Probably because their budget is $500, it's always the case that there are better quality products that cost more, doesn't mean that everyone can afford them. 256GB storage of this model is also twice the storage of the $799 Quest 3.

    • Are you comparing 128GB with 256GB? Q2 128GB is only 440 so another 360 bucks.

With $100 amazon credit it's less than half price.

  • Got the Amazon cashback deal for the Q2. It's only for a kids gift to mess around with so it will do. The cash-back pays for other Xmas gifts.

  • FYI for anyone that might return - expect possible delays?

Dropped at AusPost yesterday. Order now says "can take up to 37 days to initiate refund. after initiated can take additional 10 days to return to card"

Never seen that before, usually refunded day after it hits the AusPost

    • it's probably amazon overestimating because of BF/Xmas. they always overestimate to keep customers happy when the refund/delivery happens before the estimate.

they do it for deliveries too, estimate says delivery 2 to 3 weeks away but order arrived in a week.

    • Update: refunded so total 5 days

  • Still haven't tested my Q2 from the last deal

  • Waiting for the new Valve headset

    • +3

I’m looking forward to it too, but be warned that waiting for unannounced Valve projects (or announced ones in cases like HL2:Ep3) has traditionally been somewhat hazardous.

      • +3

Haha yeah true though I still have my $199usd lenovo explorer from way back in the day. I wish microsoft didnt ditch those headsets as they were in the perfect price point and functionality.

  • +2

For those that aren't aware, there's some pretty massive VR developments incoming. Praydog's upcoming VR injector will allow for a boatload of existing Unreal Engine games to be played in VR with fairly minimal work by the end user (I suspect that many games will end up having VR presets making it even easier). There's hints of a possible early 2024 public release, maybe January.

    • It’s been coming soon for more than a year now, but hopefully the delays are getting shorter and the arrow will reach the tortoise eventually.

      • +1

Yeah certainly hasn't been a lot of info released but things look to be coming to a head now.

  • +2

Looks like a meta quest 2 with amazon gift card may appear after midnight. Already showing on main page but link not active
