For the NVME fiends that just picked up some great deals. Especially for the high end/fast ones, these will allow them to stretch the SSDs legs a bit more compared to the 10gbps cases. If you are planning on using them eternally and willing to pay of course

Pretty good price for a Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosure. It says USB4 but fairly sure just has a Thunderbolt3 controller in it. Which is still great as neither USB4 nor Thunderbolt 4 really improves anything for the external enclosures. Not amazing but one of the cheapest I have seen, especially one that's backwards compatible with USB3 standards.

Sabrent one is pretty much always $130 but that one is NOT backwards compatible with USB3 of any kind.

3 colours are all the same price.

  • That's double the cost of what I paid for the 1TB today 😂

I bet it's topnotch but still can't justify using it on a $50 drive.

    • I mean if you have some other way you can use that drive and it's working for you, you don't need it anyway.

Who are we kidding, we don't buy things because we need them here :D ahahah so probably good that you can't justify it mate!

      • Been thinking to build my new computer, one comportment tick!

  • I think the price will go down further, as there has been some USB4 enclosures, like ORICO one on Chinese market with Youtube reviews.
If you need it now, then go for it, otherwise it might worth waiting :-)

    • I was going to say "there are no USB4 controllers in the market right now and all of them claim to be USB4 are actually Thunderbolt 3" but seems like ASM4242 is actually out and on some enclosures? But they are all $100USD+ so still more expensive than this.

Hopefully the USB4 drives will put some downward pressure on this but given how it has already taken 2 years for anyone to even come up with a controller and this being a niche market, I wouldn't keep my hopes up haha.

      • ASM4242 is a proper USB 4 controller, which does have additional benefits. Intel was nasty and put some roadblocks for that ASM chipset. However, to benefit from that, you do need either a system that has ASMedia USB4 chipset or a better type of Thunderbolt 4 setup (direct to the CPU, rather than via chipset lanes).

Unfortunately, there is a lot of cheating from enclosure makers. Majority of these enclosure are Thunderbolt 3 chipset based which claimed to be Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4. To make things worse, there are two different types of Intel Thunderbolt 4 setup. Price of this enclosure is okay if you care a lot about USB 3.2 compatibility. Question is, which chipset does it use for that? Realteak, ASMedia or JMicron? Some of them use JMicron USB 3.2 which isn't that good.

    • I hope it is not the review which indicated that cheap Orico enclosure performs better on Mac M1 Pro than Intel base Windows PCs. That review has errors. When properly setup, Intel based Windows PCs do get better results with Thunderbolt 3, 4 (and if you must, USB 4).

USB 4 is too generic, it allows enclosure makers to trick people.

  • These are FAST but runs HOOOOOOT

    • well, SSD's themselves are also hot AF, so I think it's at least good that they "run hot" as they are spreading heat that way and not damaging the SSDs.

      • +1

SSDs running in Thunderbolt 3 mode do run hotter than USB 3.2 mode. That's expected. It's also why majority of Thunderbolt 3/4/USB 4 enclosures include a heat spreader. They are also generally slightly bigger. We don't see ultra compact Thunderbolt 3 enclosures around.
