    • Can't comment on the Merrell but the Salomon are light-weight, very comfortable and needed no break in period in my experience.

    • I found Merrell to be great for the first few months. Then the shoes/boots deteriorated rapidly. I'd never use Merrell again. Just my 2 cents though! Possibly I abused them too much, but for similar types of long hiking I've had years of service from other companies.

    • Merrell are just utter crap in comparison.

    • I'd suggest trying the Merrell's on in-store. Compared to my well worn Keen Targhee III's, the arch in the Merrell is higher and too uncomfortable for me. My previous pair of high-end Salomon's delaminated after two years. Many recent reviews of the Keen now say the same thing re delamination. Pity, as my current Keens have served me well, including EBC.

    Wide feet = avoid.

    • Would 1 size up help?

      • No but a wide fit variant will

      • +1

no because now you will be tripping a lot with clown shoes on.

      • going up the y axis doesnt solve your x axis problem

    • +1

Agree. I was trying to find a lightweight goretex shoe the other week. Every Solomon i tried was way too narrow. Anyone who normally goes for wide variants of shoes should avoid. I don't think sizing up is a great idea personally, it changes the bend point of your foot in the shoe to accommodate your wider stance by going a size up.. Just find a wider shoe.

For reference I actually ended up with some asics trabuco. They're not a wide fit per se but had enough room for me!

  • Can I wear this boot to the EBC trek?

    • +1

Everest Base Camp? I was thinking the same thing! I have been to ABC in fairly bad shoes (Chinese Made and Brand) that I rented at Kalapatthar Trekking Store, Thamel and it only hurt a little during the last days of my trek. Aussie brands are much more reliable and trustable, in my experience. So, why not? But I haven't got a hold of these shoes and I have never got to experience them.

      • +1

Mate, Salomon is also under Chinese company now and last three pairs I got were all made in China but very good quality, being used them heavily on my New Zealand hiking trip and was very satisfied.

    • You're spending all that $$$ on an EBC Trek and then drop $90 on your boots? Where if they suck you'll likely have a completely miserable time in all regards.

I love to save a buck but I reckon you'd be saving a few dollars on the boots to risk a HEAP on ruining your entire trip. The risk vs reward doesn't seem great IMHO.

  • I bought a pair of them at the same price a while ago.

Pros: The lightest weight goretex boots I have, good for rainy days in the city too. Good fit, I thought they might run narrow but surprisingly they fit quite well for my not-so-narrow feet.
Cons: not vibram soles, I only had vibram soles hiking boots before and I thought they were slippery on wet and hard surfaces, boy the ones on this pair is even much more slippery than any vibrams by a big margin. Also the angle part is not so high you will get sand going into the boots quite frequently.

    • Was about to buy for my son for hiking but if it is slippery then no.

      • +1

Only on hard wet surfaces, i.e. on bathroom tiles with water, they are quite a bit worse than vibram counterparts.

On wet mud no problem, on dry surfaces very good.

      • Wait for the X Ultra's to come on sale? BF were ~$125 iirc.

  • Got 3 at at narrewarren anaconda

  • How do these compare to Himalayan Walking Shoes?

    • +3

Good to have this analysis, although surely anyone with a brain can ascertain that no material can be breathable and waterproof simultaneously. The point of Goretex and other membranes is to provide waterproofing when you need it, while also providing some breathability when it's not wet, without requiring you carry two different garments at all times for these situations.

  • Completely unrelated but for those who are size US7.5, this seems like a steal: Reebok Work Men's Rapid Response RB8678 Safety
    Only 3 available. $48

  • Welcome10 worked for me as existing club member. Showed up as 10 off $50

    • Out of curiosity. Had you previously made any orders on the account prior to this?.

  • Goretex is either waterproof or breathable, not both.

    • Description seems to say it's both.

"Protect your feet whatever the weather or terrain is with the Salomon Men's Daintree Gore-Tex Mid Hiking Boots, featuring a fully waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, Contagrip outsole for extra traction and Sensifit technology for a secure, precise fit. Light and comfortable, this breathable pair will be your new favourite companion for the outdoors."

      • But when it is wet from the outside, it does not breath. Basically it's not the hiking boot you would use in a humid, wet environment. You would be better off in hiking sandals for that specific terrain.

I own a pair of these and hiking sandals. Goretex is mostly marketing now, there's competitors that do the same or better job fyi. Great deal nonetheless.

        • The "fully waterproof" claim is nonsense. Not even close. You'll be disappointed if you have those expectations. The breathability is also arguably misleading if you don't understand what they're saying (the liner is water resistant but semi porous so to speak).

Some comments suggest G-T lined boots make their feet sweat more. That's anecdotal obviously. Haven't noticed it with my X Ultras but I have noticed that while they're water resistant they're nowhere near water proof (like leather for example). I knew that when I bought them.

Gore-Tex (and similar tech materials) works well for coats ime, but is only marginal for boots.

    • Goretex is waterproof, not breathable, in my experience. It's no different to any other waterpoorf lining - it will keep your feet dry but hot. I only wear waterproof boots in winter or when I'm expecting a lot of water or mud on the trail. Non-waterproof boots are best in hot climates, like Australia in summer.

      • Put a hose on your GT boots while you're wearing them and tell me if they're waterproof. Won't take long.

There are a few on sale at BCF too. Are these brands on BCF (e.g., Merrell, Columbia, Keen) comparable to this one or they're BCF's exclusive brands? I have 15% off BCF card which will make the prices similar to Anaconda's 10% intro discount.

I have these, they are okay for $99. Not exactly premium quality boots, they do feel a bit cheap, but what else you'd expect for $99

  • +1

I own these shoes. Have done many multiple day hikes with these with a full pack. Not much I can say other than they are shoes that do the job…comfortable during hiking, they are waterproof. I wear custom orthotics with them though so might be a little different. Got them for $80 I think from anaconda and they were worth it for that price.

  • Shame they don't do size 15

  • thanks OP. click and collected a pair last night. US size 12 and fit great

  • +1

These are cheap made-in-India boots, not the usual Salomon quality. I found them uncomfortable with poor insoles, lacing and not enough wrap around the ankles. I'd definitely try them on first if possible, otherwise be prepared to send them back if not 100% satisfied.

  • +1

I have a pair of these on now (my everyday wear currently).
I have owned them for years, maybe 10, I can't remember.
I do go spells where I don't where them for a while as well)
    Obvioulsy I recommend them!

  • I brought these last deal, very happy with these. Use to lifeguard where waves would go over my feet during winter and would (profanity) freeze my feet in 9 degree water, got these and water only ever got in my shoes if the waves went over the tongue. Great for hiking and camping too taken these to wildons prom and other hikes and performed well.

  • Thanks OP - just ordered. None in stock near me so went half a size up, fingers crossed they fit!

    • +1

When hiking it's presumed you'll wear a thick merino sock anyway and you'll also want a small amount of clearance to take into account your foot swelling as it gets hot so you'll probably be ok.

FWIW if folks are after CHEAP hiking footwear I've personally bought and tested 3 different models from the Chinese brand, Hikeup - bought direct from Aliexpress and found them surprisingly good. On sale they were a tad over $AUD40 a pair delivered, sizing was accurate, QC was pretty good and materials were acceptable.

I got them as I didn't want to drop $200+ on a pair of Scarpa or Asolo & still need variety of footwear for different hikes. I had very low expectations of them but having used each of them on several pretty robust hikes now e.g Syndicate Trail, Gleniffer NSW - they've exceeded my expectations considerably. Durability seems ok thus far but I am unsure long term.

I'd say they're comparable to what you'd spend $100-150 on here at normal RRP pricing.

Also bought a pair of water shoes from Humtto, which were quite good - and that same brand has hiking boots which look quite good for the $$$.

Good advice is to buy a full US size above your normal everyday shoe size, you can always add a superior innersole & thicker sock - but I've found sizing in the above brands to be reasonably accurate - perhaps a 1/2 US size smaller than is TRUE.
