Cheapest Android Phone for Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi Hotspot

iPhone user here. iOS does not allow wifi to wifi hotspot. (aka Wifi repeater)
Looking for the cheapest Android phone to do that.
About 1 day battery life would be good.
Need a portable device that I can carry around

Clarification:
Ok: Mobile (4G) to Wifi hotspot works fine on iPhone
Not ok: Wifi —— IPhone >>> share wifi to other devices

  • Pocket WiFi modem for less than $40.

Telstra locked but works with Boost Sims

Edit: just re read your question. Why do you want a phone to act as a WiFi repeater? Why not buy an actual router (eg GL Inet or similar)

    • Need portable device.
Current using TP link AC750 but I need to carry a battery pack.
Heard that android phone can do wifi repeater?

      • I looked through my Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus (a flagship phone) settings and I can't see anything that allows it to hotspot and share a wifi connection.

It can share my cellular data via Wifi, USB or Bluetooth only. There are apps on the Google Play market that claim to turn your phone into a repeater but they have no reviews, or poor reviews..

        e.g WiFi Extender 3,1 stars

    • Looking for wifi to wifi hotspot.
4G to Wifi hotspot is ok

      • Like a range extender?

        Modem->Modem WiFi->Android Device->Android WiFi-> Other devices

        Does Android even do this?
There is an App that says it does it, but from an alleged 100+K downloads it doesn't have a single review which seems a little odd.
I'm certainly unwilling to install it to test.

        • My android does this. I use it with my chromecast in hotels. Chromecast can't login to wifi splash pages for some reason so I share the hotel wifi from my android.

  • I use my old phone as a hotspot, however, after about two hours into work (WFH), the device notifies we that it is too hot, and hot spotting will be closed. This is annoying as I am working from home unfortunately. If anyone has a solution, please let me know. I was looking into buying a 4g wifi device but it is too expensive, $200 dollars.

  • That’s the article on wifi to wifi hotspot

    • Well there you go… it seems to work for me on a Xiaomi Mi 9T running PixelExperience Custom ROM (although I have no other device to connect to the hotspot to check. After turning off Mobile Data it indicated that it was still Hotspotting while connected to WiFi.)

Based on the article, it looks like Xiaomi devices support it, so I'd be tending toward one of them. As recent as possible to ensure the battery is still OK.
You can buy low end Xiaomi/Poco for $200 new, so used should be less than that if you can fine one.

      • For better battery life, get a model with a Snapdragon SoC, and look to flash Lineage OS (do not flash the GApps - Google apps and services as they are massive battery hogs are are not required for your purposes)
