  • are these using the old batteries? which means the drill is old stock? to me from the picture it looks like they use the V1 stanley fatmax batteries?

    • Yes, this uses the old style batteries

  • where do you get batteries from for these havent seen them in shops for over a decade

    • Your best bet may be to buy or print an adapter to another battery / ecosystem

You can modify your Fat max18V tool with instructions from this video. But I wouldnt be doing it on a new FatMax tool as it would void warranty. having some old tools I would give it a try when my stanley batteries eventually die.

Although I could probably take the guts of a B &D battery and just swap the cases. Again not doing this yet as the stanley batteries are still ok.

      • It used to be simple to change a Porter Cable (US) skin or battery to fit the Stanley stuff. I imported a Porter Cable torch, and simply filed a tab off to fit my existing Stanley batteries to it. Wonder if this is still the case. Dunno…I lost interest in the brands (per my comment below).

Punishing customers by putting in petty little modifications to control regional markets and prevent people from interchanging tools is not great. I should have known better.

Just after I built up a kit of these V1 Fatmax, they made that battery change. I'm going to buy Makita now for any new tools, and have already started.

The Stanley tools have been good though - very decent for the price I feel, and this is a good drill. Better than the bottom end stuff at Bunnings. Not as good as the better gear from Milwaukee, Makita and others. It doesn't have to stand up to trade use with me, but I feel like they could do.

Just a shame they took a big steaming dump on customers with the completely unnecessary battery change. No Stanley…I don't want to deal with your stupid, ugly, bulky adapter!

    • I read your issues and I bit the bullet and dismantled my B&D 2Amp battery and also the Stanley 2AMP battery. I switched the internals over case to case. removal of 4 screws on each, and the batteries worked in both the B&D device, charger and likewise on the Stanley.

So with the 2 amp batteries they are interchangeable by taking battery internal module (no cutting whatsoever needed) Yes they cant be used in both brands at the same time, but at least you can buy new B&D batteries and use them in the Stanley with the Stanley battery casing.

Might do a Youtube video to show how easy it is.

      • Update.

Jumped the gun on the total interchangeability. Just finished the whole process.

You can use B&D inner module in Stanley casing but not the reverse without doing some plastic cutting. Still considering your tools are Fatmax not B&D you are still a winner.
