OPPO Find N3 Folding Android Phone $2564.05 (Was $2699) + Free Shipping Only @ JB Hi-Fi

143
WICKEDWEDDEC5

The first discount on this brilliant foldable. I preordered one last month and it arrived a couple weeks later, and I have been rapt with it. (Luckily I have price protection via the old Coles MasterCard Platinum product)

I have owned every Samsung Fold from 1-4, and this definitely blows it out of the water. The software isn't as feature-packed as Samsung's, and there are a few odd omissions, but nothing deal-breaking IMO – the performance, smoothness, and speed more than make up for it.

$2.5k for a phone no thanks
      .

      • +1

        $2.5k no thanks

      • +4

Apple: “let’s charge enormous prices for our phones, people are going to buy them anyway”
Every other phone manufacturer: “Apple charges so much lol might as well do the same”

    • +3

Apple at any price - no thanks.

    • +2

Funnily enough, it has double the RAM of the base M3 MacBook Pro.

  • Thought mi mix 3 fold was better than this.

    • That's definitely another great foldable, particularly its thinness, but unfortunately not officially sold in Australia.

  • +1

I wish the 2 was missing from the price!

  • No dust-resistance and no wireless charging, but slimmest fold in market

  • +11

It's really hard to look at this when you can regularly get a Fold 5 for $1.5k or less, but I'm glad that Oppo is at least pushing Samsung harder. I really miss Huawei, to this day I think the Mate 20 pro was the best all round phone I ever bought.

    • +4

Yes, it's very hard to look past Samsung's insane discounts, sales, and trade-in prices!! Most companies couldn't afford it…

Despite the extraordinary discounts, I decided to take a leap and step outside the Samsung bubble for the first time in years. I push my devices to the limit software-wise, so I was very keen to find the most performant foldable around.

It's definitely a shame that most of the Asian smartphone companies have been snuffed out of the Western markets. I partially blame xenophobic governments!

      • +2

the main, if not the only, reason that samsung has been doing "insane discounts, sales" etc, is they have lost the compeition to a number of brilliant Chinese mobile phone manufactruers. In fact, its not just samsung's mobile phone… with their current pm han duck-soo, korea is losing on many grounds to China and other countries.

    • +2

Typing this reply in a mate 20 pro. Used it for 2 years my only complain is the declining battery.

      • P30 pro was one of my favourite phones, i wish HTC was back in the game their phones were great.

      • +1

Had a mate 20x, biggest bar phone ever made. Still plays videos bigger than my current fold 5.

Would jump back to huawei in a heartbeat if they ever got unbanned by google.

        • Oh wow - 7.2 inches!!!

      • Same here 3 years for mine picked it up from HN for $600 and it's been fantastic don't even have a screen protector on it. A while ago they were doing the batteries for $60 but you have to send it away.

    • Yep, same. Had a Mate 20 Pro for a couple of years. One of the best wide angle lenses in the business at the time, and still pretty hard to beat. Too bad they got torpedoed by Trump.

  • +3

Currently have the Z Fold 5, and I had been eyeing the One Plus Open (which is basically a Oppo FInd N3), but even at this discount price it's very hard to get over my Fold 5.

I paid $1380 for my Fold 5 512GB after all the discounts stacked, additional $1.12k for this is just a really tough pill to swallow.

I wish in general Foldables would be around the $1.5k price point or lower, $2.6k for the Fold 5 256GB MSRP is just ridiculous. Hopefully more Foldables coming to the market would get all these companies to lower prices, because atm in the west Samsung still has the monopoly.

    • +1

That's fair enough. I kinda view the Find N3 release here as a soft launch – only available at JB and the OPPO store, after all – to test the Australian market's appetite. It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem, I suppose. Hopefully, successive launches will enable them to gain more economies of scale to reduce the price.

      • +1

N3's (and to extend other Chinese phones) selling point is being cheaper than Apple & Samsung. With a crazy discount, I doubt Chinese premium phones have an appeal to anyone in Australia unless it is a sub-$300 5G phone that is packed with all bells and whistles.

        • That's a gross oversimplification. The N3 has been able to achieve several engineering accomplishments that Samsung hasn't: no visible crease, thinner and lighter, wider cover display, flagship cameras, much longer battery life.

          • +2

@itsfree: No, it is true. The selling point of Chinese is a cheaper price tag. This is despite of Fold 5 being better in actual tests. For instance, you mentioned battery life, Fold 5 actually has a longer battery life than N3 even though Fold 5 is 100 nits brighter than N3 in manual mode. N3 is thinner and lighter, because it is only rated for IPX4 when Fold 5 is rated for IPX8.

In the end, it is a question if N3 is actually worth it at this price. I am sorry, the answer is just no.

            • @kovojk: Real life usage can often vary from lab usage/benchmarks – and I can tell you that the battery is definitely lasting me longer than my Fold 3 or 4 did. Don't forget the displays are larger too. Additionally, the inner display is significantly higher quality than the Fold5 – matte finish, crisper, brighter. The hinge mechanism has a robust, sure quality to it – it doesn't feel sticky/laboured to unfold like the Z Fold series.

I personally couldn't be happier with the purchase, even at full price.

  • +3

Once upon a time Oppo phones were all about affordable/ value for money phones. Now this is a crazy price. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Oppo phones.

    • -4

I think it's great they are boldly going upmarket into a different segment and snapping at Samsung's heels. Looking at Folds 3-5, Samsung has gotten too lazy!

    • +1
    • +1

Yeah all the major Chinese brands have started pushing for upmarkets, and using budget brands to capture the "value" segment.

      Oppo -> Realme
      Vivo -> iQOO
      Xiaomi -> Redmi & Poco

      • Those brands are not sold in Australia.
No Australia basically have no value segment brands.

        • +1

Realme used to be sold at JB but I guess it proved to be unpopular so they're not sold anymore. Still available direct.

      • Oppo, Realmi, Vivo, IQOO, Oneplus are all Owned by BBK Electronics

$2.5k for OPPO phone, which is one of worst when it comes to software and updates…has to be one the worst deals ever.

    • +1

OPPO flagships from 2023 and forward will receive four upgrades and five years of patches.

The majority of recent Samsung phones will see four upgrades and five years of patches.

You could say the exact same thing about Google….

    • +1

I would like to disagree on

one of worst when it comes to software and update

I had a couple of Oppo phones and lasted longer than any other other phone that I had (don't go to apple). Really good specs for reasonable price.
Maybe not this particular phone (reasonable price), but talking as in general.

      • +2

Most phones generally last for years these days but software updates is another story. I passed my 5 year old LG V30 to my aunt in great working condition. It's the software support that counts in the long run which Apple, Samsung and Google are very good at.

      • Yeah – just check out all the replies here:

I just jumped back to the OnePlus open after a week and half of using Xiaomi 14 pro and that oxygenOS animation just looks crazy smooth. Not that hyperOS isn't smooth but I think oppo/OnePlus really prioritize animation speed/fluidity. Basic things like scrolling feels faster

The OnePlus 11 was the smoothest phone I have used this year. Oxygen OS scrolling is even better than iOS or Xiaomi or even Honor Magic OS 7.1.

Yes. OnePlus feels smooth and faster because of the OS. Its faster then PixelUI. Animations and Customizations are good too.

(OxygenOS and ColorOS are basically the same)

  • +2

I have owned every Samsung Fold from 1-4, and this definitely blows it out of the water.

Keep wishing hard enuff OP and who knows, it might become a reality. For your sanity sake at least anywayz . lol

    • I am not really a brand loyalist – if the Fold 6 improves by leaps and bounds, I will probably switch back!

  • Nobody should be paying home computer 1995 prices for a measly smart phone. I mean nobody.

  • OPPO Find N3's selling point abroad is a slightly cheaper price tag than Samsung's. Fold 5 regularly is on sale for $1600~1800 on ozbargain and the prices went below $1k at one point with trade-in.

Is N3 really almost $1000 better than Fold 5? I doubt it.

On the top of that, actual users (not paid reviewers) report a touchsceen lag issue which seems to be a common problem among OPPO folder phones. Sorry, this isn't a deal.

    • +1

No touchscreen lag at all on my end - only can see a couple of people mentioning it in the linked thread? OTOH, I experienced heaps of software lag in One UI. For me, I'm always using my phone, so the improved performance over One UI is definitely worth it, particularly with camera cold launch + shutter speed.

  • 2500 Australian Pesos

  • still very expensive.
    I can wait

  • +2

Does this clean your house and make your breakfast? Seriously, other than being the latest and greatest and it folds, what do you get for $2500?

    • The best tablet is the one you have with you

      • Ok

  • To compare with $950ish Samsung Fold 5, discounted back to October, $2500 for this phone is extremely over priced.

    • I don't think we will ever be able to stack discounts like that again tbh - heck, most people couldn't checkout IIRC (including me)

  • -1

Hmm…..no China dumping price this time?

Betting 2.5k on a new product, you have to give it to the bravely of OP. Good luck on services, this phone will have so little in circulation. Unless the services agent is given RA inventory, I don't know how long will take to repair your phone if it breaks…..

Reason why Apple and Smasung is popular is because of their ability to service. Other Asia brand quit Australia market or only have little share is because of that.

Also update is another issue. Asian brand except Samsung a quite poor at that. Ask any S23 user, how many updates they had since they purchase the phone?

  • +1

I remember when Kia was the bargain price car. Now they are selling an Ev for over $100K. People will buy it as they believe it to be premium. Folding phones, I will wait for the one that is see through.

    • +1

Generaly all EV is about 60K+ starting….. CCP EV is cheap, just like phones. Its basically dumping to other country to get market share and god knows what other stuff they put in their car!

Kia, Hyundai, Tesla……etc don't have government funding and have share holders to answer to. Just like how Huawei go into 5G tender bidding at half the price of Nokia and Ericsson.

  • +1

Of course a week after I bit the bullet because there were no preorder/launch deals, JB would do a sitewide deal to give a slight discount…

While I generally agree that it's hard to consider this a deal when you can regularly get a Samsung Fold 5 for half the price or less, I think it's worth mentioning a few reasons why you'd get this over a Fold 5:
    - Non-weird aspect ratio for cover screen, feels like any other smartphone when used closed
    - Properly high spec cameras, most foldables run out of room for the best cameras
    - Nearly invisible crease

Also worth mentioning that as far as I know Oppo are a huge manufacturer that has been making premium smartphones primarily for the Chinese market, but globally mostly only sell their more budget range. I love to see the competition in the folding phone space finally, as I feel like Samsung has just become lazy without it.

Yes the above won't justify double the price for most, and that's fine, but I still think the fact that this is objectively better than the Fold 5 in some ways means this is still a deal for those in the market. If we were only allowed to post deals on Fold 5's then you would probably have to take down all the iPhone and Samsung S23 Ultra deal posts too… Just saying!

    • +1

      Well said!

    • -2

I love to see the competition in the folding phone space finally, as I feel like Samsung has just become lazy without it.

You live in Mars or something? Two flag ship release per year and one Major OS update per year base on Google's releases plus at least 1 patches and updates every two months? Do thing you you get any of these with the the CCP junks!

Like I said, love to see what happen when you phone break, don't come back here or Whirlpool crying about crap services.

      • +1

When I say Samsung has been getting lazy, I mean on the hardware innovation front, as the Fold series feels like it's become a bit stagnant. But sure, you can call the Find N3 a "CCP junk" if you want, doesn't change the fact that there are parts of the hardware that are objectively better than anything Samsung has put out to date in a folding phone. To be fair, I believe the screens on the Samsung Fold 5 are still better quality wise since Samsung is likely the supplier for Oppo's screens and would reserve the best tech for themselves, but the screens on my Find N3 are plenty good enough for me.

Anecdotally, Samsung is just as bad on the folding phone fragility front. One of my friends had a Fold 4 and looked after it, but the internal folding screen started to delaminate and eventually became unusable. I got JB's 24-month mobile extras exactly because of the fact that foldables in general are more prone to damage by nature. My point is that no matter the brand, foldables in general are just more fragile than non-folding phones and you just have to accept that if you're getting one IMO.

If your point is about Oppo likely providing sub-par after sales support if something breaks, I don't think you have to look very far to find other non Chinese owned companies providing service that falls under the umbrella of sub-par, including Samsung at times.

Feel free to come back and slander me if I ever come back and start whining about Oppo's poor service though.

        • -1

You walk into Samsung store with that delaminated phone, you will get replacement on the day if not within a week. Straight swap if you have Samsung care. Good luck with OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi….

It makes no difference you get that extra, they can choose to reinvust you with a voucher or equal price handset (can't remember the terms). It is the inconvenience of moving data and signing back into all your apps that annoys me. Yes that is more or less the case with Apple and Samsung but it's just easier. Shame most customer, especially OZBs care is about price, and none realise services cost money too especially in Australia.

          • @syswong: Definitely a fair point, and 100% agree that Samsung will give you better service in Australia than Oppo will (Xiaomi doesn't even officially sell to Australia AFAIK). But for me personally, I don't think the fact that Samsung will give you better service is a big enough reason to ignore Oppo entirely. To your point though, my friend who had the delaminated Fold 4 screen got his phone swapped for an S23 Ultra, so even anecdotally I can verify that Samsung gave my friend great support in his situation.

If your personal stance is that you strongly value that support aspect, then yes, it's definitely worth buying from the bigger brands like Samsung and Apple that will give you that level of support. It's why I'm with Aussie Broadband for my internet after all. But for me personally, when it comes to my phone, I'm willing to forego some of that support for the cutting-edge hardware I get with this phone, understanding that it's a compromise. I'm well aware that if my phone breaks I'm a lot less supported than if I had a Samsung, it's just a risk I'm willing to wear and have tried to partially offset by buying the mobile extras.

          • +1

@syswong: as someone who has dealt with Samsung and the Fold multiple times, couldn't be further from the truth

1wk+ to replace screen protectors, the fastest turnaround I had was in Jan that was 4d to replace faulty hinge

this is across two stores in SYD and one store in MEL, with Samsung Care+.

            • -1

@maybe a bot: I said it could take up to a week didn't I? This is especially true with fold models as actually circulation is low so less RMA inventory, but at least you got it back in a reasonable time frame. Try with a faulty Oppo, Vivo,….etc🤣🤣

If you have Samsung care, did you enquire about device swap when yo do the warranty? I thonk you have to pay some money but should be done on the spot or 24 hours max.

My experience with Samsung is quite good. My wife's S10 literally on the last day of warranty and submit for battery issue. Battery and motherboard replaced in 24 hours. Help a friend of mine do a device swap of a fold device and was done on the same day, both done at Myer store.
