Visa-Free Entry to Kenya for Australian Passport Holders (Was US$51)

1500

As reported -

Starting January 1, 2024, the Kenyan government has abolished visa requirements for international travellers visiting the East African nation. The move to allow visa-free entry aims to boost trade and tourism within Kenya. The tourism industry, crucial to Kenya’s economy, offers diverse experiences, including inland wildlife safaris and beach holidays.

President William Ruto, a staunch supporter of visa-free travel, during an event commemorating Kenya’s 60th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, expressed, “It is no longer necessary for anyone from any corner of the globe to bear the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya.”

Mod 12/1/24 - Kenyan authorities have since clarified that while the country grants visa-free entry, visitors need to apply for electronic travel authorisation (ETA) by submitting documentation and paying a $30 processing fee. The requirement also applies to countries whose citizens previously had unrestricted access to Kenya. More info

I lived around that area during COVID. Not a day went buy the local bottle-o didn't get robbed at least once. Interesting place, I thought I had seen it all when I used to live in Woodridge until I moved to that side of Melbourne. I was wondering why my rent was $350 for a 4 bedroom and decent backyard.

You made even @jv shocked mate. I've seen it all now lol

      • +5

Yes, that does seem a little surprising.
The way I see it, you can experience excellent Greek food and culture in Oakleigh, Italian in Carlton and Vietnamese in Springvale.
These are obvious things. No need to be a afraid of stating the obvious truth, even in these overly-sensitive times.

I'm told by Kenyan friends that new government spending "to fix things" has recently rapidly increased the national debt while interest rates rose globally, causing pressure because the nation must now service that debt. (The things were of course not fixed.)

While travelling Kenya as a non-African you do tend to pay the "mzungu tax" (white person tax) which is the nickname for extra charges for foreigners. For example, a Kenyan tourist entering Masai Mara national park pays a few bucks, while a foreign tourist pays like $100/day. As a white guy in a marketplace I could only haggle a leather belt down to about $25 but my Kenyan brother-in-law bought it for $3. Pretty normal in many countries though.

  • Not sure if any one has thought this before but 5 visa free trips to Kenya (plus a little extra $) will cover the cost of the Aussie passport.

  • Awesome

    Thanks OP.

strange the visa website still shows that Australians need a visa to visit Kenya ,even the embassy website as well !!!!!

  • Just came back from Kenya. This statement is not true. People have to apply for ETA now for $30 USD.
