Choosing the Right Home Theatre Receiver - Need HELP

Hi all,

Let's start by saying that I know absolutely nothing about audio surround systems. My kid just destroyed the AV receiver, which was an Onkyo TX-SR605. The speakers I have are all Wharfedale, specifically 2 Crystal 40 (60 ohms, 150W), 1 Crystal centre (60 ohms, 100W), 2 Crystal 10 (60 ohms, 100W), and 1 PowerCube 10+.

Considering I now have to buy a new receiver, I was thinking of also purchasing 2 height speakers for Dolby Atmos (those that should sit on top of the floorstanding speakers). I'm not an audiophile, so I don't need the best of the best. I'm actually quite inclined toward the cheapest options for both the receiver and the height speakers. Can anyone suggest the best bang for the buck currently in the market? Is there any other information I need to provide? Thank you to everyone able to help me out.

You should be able to use Wharfedale Crystal 10 as height speakers. If they are not available, check with your Wharfedale dealer for a replacement.
Technically any brand would do , but same brand / model would mean looks better / uniform as well.
The Onkyo appears like an entry/mid level receiver. There are many brands in the market. Check if you like to have the features like 4k, dolby atmos, etc.

Usually the higher the wattage , the better. But there is not common spec to compare this.
Eg: The marantz cinema 40 ARV specs are below :
    Number of Powered Channels 9
    Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.05% 2ch Drive) 125 W
    70% Guarantee Yes

This means when there are 7 speakers, the max power output per channel drops to about 87.5 w (8 Ohm).

I'm actually quite inclined toward the cheapest options for both the receiver and the height speakers.

I would recommend to go for a reasonably good receiver within budget so that its future-proof.

Can anyone suggest the best bang for the buck currently in the market?

You could talk to a HI-FI retailer like West Coast Hifi etc to get to know whats available and price range. Usually all hifi retailers do negotiate on price as well.

    Yamaha V6A… it just works

Atmos speakers on top of the fronts have mixed reports. I have mine on there and I've tried calibrating and I just don't know if I notice the difference, but ymmv

  • thank you all! really appreciate it!

  • I have a Denon 580 5.2 - very happy with it. From Selby Acoustics in Hallam Vic. There are also 7.2 models as suggested above. Just make sure you cross check every feature you want against the specs. Eg A Yamaha didn’t have one feature I preferred (forget what that was now).
