Sonoro Go London AA battery Bluetooth Speaker with DAB $79 + Delivery ($0 MEL C&C/ $100 Order) @ RIO Sound & Vision

50

was $119 back in 2020 according to this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/585866
Available in "Black" and "White".

The interesting thing about this is not that it looks like a drink cup with a straw in it, but it takes 6x AA batteries (NiMH rechargeables not included but a $29.99 add on). I assume plenty of you have unused Eneloops in a drawer somewhere anyway.
with Lithium cells being built into most BT speakers these days I thought this was worth posting for someone looking for a handy replaceable AA alternative.

  • Up to 12 hours battery life
  • Digital radio (FM/DAB/DAB+) Each with 10 preset radio stations
  • Automatic and manual radio station search
  • LCD display with Multilingual Menu (DE, EN, FR, IT)
  • Telescopic FM/DAB antenna
  • AUX-IN to connect MP3 player etc.
  • Includes AUX-IN cable (3.5mm jack)
  • Includes universal power cable with AU plug

Specs say a single 3 inch upwards firing woofer with bass reflex port which isn't bad but don't expect earth shattering sound out of this. should be fine for podcasts and background music.

oh and you could blend in at a party like Hitman pretending to hold a drink when you are secretly carrying a speaker. 😉

Previous posts seem to suggest Free shipping Australia wide, but I can't find anymore info on it since their Shipping/Delivery info page is down. https://www.rio.com.au/shipping-delivery-information/

    Looks like a toilet brush

    • I thought of a cup with a straw but yeah sure toilet brush too I see it.

    • I just realized it supports Digital Radio (DAB) so that toilet brush handle thing is the extendable antenna.

    • exactly my thought!

  • my bad seems like according to mod edit it's not free shipping.

I did get a 10% off for sign up popup which might offset the shipping cost. but not sure if it will apply to this speaker.

  • Can I listen to Portuguese radio with these?

I have no idea with radios..

I don't know sorry. DAB questions will need to be answered by the oldies.

as far as I know "Digital Radio" is similar to "Digital TV" so it's local air broadcast that replaced the older broadcasting type. so Portuguese radio will need to be broadcast locally (I know some non english language stations are)

but I think you will need "Internet Radio" to listen to international radio stations from another country.

It's broadcast using radiowaves, but at different frequencies and digitally. So, no, you cannot listen to Portuguese radio unless you bring it to Portugal.

I find DAB a total letdown, because the bitrate at which they broadcast tends to be very bad, such that in terms of sound quality you are better off with FM.

        • Thanks for the reply guys.

Now to find an "internet radio".. 😅

Also, I didn't realise DAB was worse-sounding than FM!

          • @WasBargain: "Now to find an "internet radio".. 😅"

btw internet radio is basically streaming (constant internet live audio stream). so you just need the device to support it and once connected to the internet it can stream any global internet radio station. you might also want to double check the Portugese radio station you want to listen to broadcasts online.

I don't listen to radio at all so I didn't know this but looks like you can download internet radio phone apps (you could stream it to your phone then to a bluetooth speaker for example). I recognize some of the popular stations such as "Tune in" and "iHeart radio". I would stick with well known ones if installing an app and only resort to some random one if I could only find the international radio station there.

            • @harshbdmmaster718: I've had a few of them for years but now thinking about it, I just stopped using it probably because it was soo finicky to get it set up/connected every time. Thinking about it also though, something physical like this would still be pretty finicky to set up every time too.. 😪

@WasBargain: fyi family member has Bose Soundtouch speaker. it's not portable or cheap though needs to be plugged into the wall.

it has 6 numbered programmable buttons on top you can set to play any internet radio station or playlist (admittedly not enough for family member they say they want more than 6). you just press one and start listening.

I just looked them up seems like they don't sell them anymore. there are some 2nd hand ones on eBay though.

                • @harshbdmmaster718: Thank you! Will try and find one to grab, looks good sized and easy to understand buttons for my old man to also use.. 😅

  • AA battery.. :\

    • yeah it's probably more niche by modern standards. all my bluetooth speakers have built in battery.

while it is technically possible to find buy and replace built in batteries. it takes a lot of careful work with heatpad/heatgun and putting it back together with adhesive to make sure nothing rattles afterwards. the reward is sometimes you can fit a battery with larger capacity. 🙂
but some are just so hard to take apart most people will either break something or can't be bothered to open it. for example I have one I watched the teardown for and it has a metal grill all the way around 1 single piece and it's soldered in 4 spots at the top. this is after taking everything else apart and you HAVE to desolder to remove this grill and then the speaker driver just to get access to the battery, then resolder and put it all back again. they literally designed it to be the most difficult thing to replace ever.

so I can also understand the convenience of just swapping AA batteries.
