Asus Routers from Germany

Hi
I saw a decent deal for an Asus XT-8 on Amazon via Germany.

Or xt-9

A lot of sources suggest the wifi signal strength is lower on UK spec routers. However does anyone have any experience with routers from Germany ?

Thanks

  • My recollection of the Asus router interface (which I haven't used for 5+ years) is that you can select Tx power.

Personally, this is not something I would sweat over. Tx power is one thing, the other is how well the router can pick up the (probably weaker) signals from your phone or tablet.

Some of those 'fancy' mesh packs don't play nice out of region though. Off memory, the older Google mesh devices would brick themselves outside the US, and Unifi gear would do the same. I have no idea what Asus gear does outside region (probably no issue, but it's a possibility to be aware of).

    • Asus still allows you to adjust the Tx power. Asus routers are hard coded from the factory and changing the region doesn't get around it. I haven't checked for Germany but from Amazon UK you get Asus routers with weaker 2.4GHz, missing the upper 5GHz channels and you have to send it back to Amazon UK for warranty as Asus Australia won't cover it.

    • No, tx power has a large impact on Wi-Fi speed. Low signal strength from a device to the router has less of an impact due to the fact that nearly all Wi-Fi traffic in normal usage comes in the downstream direction, so it does not matter that the upstream link from the device to the router is running at a lower speed.

Thanks I was confused about where to put as I found these deals and then wanted to ask the question as well

    • Do you care about having a warranty? I personally would.

    • Yes I do care about it but I thought amazon would cover for warranty wouldn't they?

    • Depends on what coverage u want etc? Are u in a small apartment vs in a large double storey house etc?
No point getting the fastest and high spec router if u are not paying ur ISP for a faster plan.

    • I have 250/50 and planning to go for 1000/50.
House is single storey and have ax55 uk version but somehow it seems it drops when many devices connect. So thinking which one to upgrade to and use AI mesh (wireless) and make ax55 as a node
House size 170m2 but lot of partition walls
