Been looking at the 7X Sapphire Solar model for a while now, this seems to be the cheapest it's been in abit.

New model might be coming soon? Not sure. If you're patient, wait. If not, then this seems like a good deal.

Already superceded by 7 Pro series, with next gen sensor package. Expect 8 series to land in less than one year from now.

    • Thanks for the info, Cheers!

    • No different to the Epix Gen2 being succeeded by the Epix Gen2 Pro with the newer sensor, but a heap of OzBargainers bought the Epix lately.

I was one of the ones that got the Epix, but if I had known this was coming I would have got this. Solar charging would be a win.

      • Solar is no big gamechanger, it basically means the difference between say 30 days and 35 days if you're in ideal conditions (i.e. outside a lot) and using minimal watchface, minimal backlight, activities, etc. Day to day difference is minimal and the more functions / activities you use the less solar makes a difference.

In other words, it slows down consumption more than actually charges it.

AMOLED on Epix > Solar, at least for me.

        • Well that's good. I use my Epix as my daily watch so I have AOD, I get about 5 days of battery. So doesn't sound like solar would have shifted that too much.

Can't answer calls, sms, Telegram, etc., can't use as a screen for your cellphone's camers, - $900 is total overprice for such limited smart functionality with questionable sensors.

    • Curious what watch exactly you're comparing this to?

      • -1

Nearly any modern Huawei above $500.

    • Sensors on all smartwatches are questionable… Need to use a chest strap.

Garmins have great battery life and so far integrate with all my external sensors effortlessly. I also use the map feature more than I expected to mid-activity and it's really nice. The durability is also insanely good.

I used to run a Suunto 7 with WearOS but the charging wasn't reliable, and the daily charging was a nightmare (made worse by the unreliable charger). Some of the functionality was nice but responding to messages via watch just felt gimmicky.

Part of the appeal for me is also not using it for messages/answering calls.

      • Nope. There are people comparing them and actually giving exact data on what is bad and what is equal to the chest straps. You'll find that on YouTube.

        • Yeah I'm aware of the quasi-scientific videos but nothing is truly equal to having a chest strap paired. And, these videos aren't exactly reliable, you can find plenty of videos citing the Garmin HR Fenix 7 sensor as accurate when it's pretty laggy and imprecise.

There are other variables as well, if you're rowing for example, the hand movements shake the watch around. I'm sure you can get around anything by shaving your wrist and tightening the heck out of the watch but I don't want to have that bugging me an hour or two into a long run/ride.

Really, I think it's just the trade-off for great battery life but each to their own.

@Assburg: Battery life is not an issue on modern Android devices, and Garmin isn't special here.

I found trusted sources of scientific researchs and they exactly match my personal experience. If you prefer to ignore some facts and defend some others, we have nothing to discuss here. Just add a disclaimer when next time will say this

            • Sensors on all smartwatches are questionable… Need to use a chest strap.

            *in your fact-ignoring opinion.

            • -1

@Ozzster: So you found science that matches your experience and decided that it's irrefutable?

If you've seen how many retractions there have been over the past couple years you'd know there's no such thing as a reliable scientific publication anymore…

Just seems like you probably don't do anything besides cycling/low intensity cardio with your watch… in which case they're all very accurate (Garmin included).

When you're trying to get a new max HR in an interval session you simply won't know with an optical strap, whereas an electrode based HRM will let you know.

              • @Assburg:

                • in which case they're all very accurate

                right after

                • Sensors on all smartwatches are questionable… Need to use a chest strap.

Good luck with this logic, I am not wasting time anymore on this logicless argumentation.

                • @Ozzster: Man, logicless argumentation. I'll avoid the ad hominem but you clearly can't understand the two distinct scenarios I explained.

51mm too. Very nice, but the wife wouldn't be too happy as she just bought me a (n inferior) watch for Christmas.

      You won't regret it

My Fenix 6X from October 2019 is still going strong, probably the best piece of tech I've ever bought. Maybe I'll treat myself to the Fenix 8 when they come out (and go on sale of course)

  • I'm selling one of these with the titanium band if anyone is interested.
