Be better once usb c charging to create a "fully" portable speaker

    • So usb a or microusb stops it being portable?

      • Yes 😊

      • Much easier to charge when camping or out n about via a power bank rather then inverter. But also comes down to requirements

      • I responded below, but actually I'm a bit confused now.

maybe they mean they want the actual speaker to charge via USB-C PD and not via AC cord like the JBL.

    • the Stormbox Blast recommended below has USB-C charging output. no fast charge though only 5V/1A.

JBL's USB-A outputs 5V/2A so quicker charge but as you say you want USB-C port.

  • Prefer the PartyBox On-The-Go to this.

    • This 1 waterproof. Floats. 24hr battery. Party box water resistant. Half battery and power and doesnt float. Depends on application. Although party box has funky lights

  • Tribit StormBox Blast is generally favoured over the Boombox3.
You can pick those up for well under $300 and they sound better except for a touch of bass.

Boombox 3 built quality shits all over it though, and looks a lot more premium.

Just something to consider if you just want a portable loud speaker, instead of splashing out $500.

    • If can find something to spend the gc on. Then essentially makes it $299. Pretty good if in market

      • "If can find something to spend the gc on. Then essentially makes it $299."

it really doesn't. the way you should look at these types of deals is, you pay the full $498 for the Boombox 3 then you get $200 off your next item you buy.
if you wanted to stretch it you could then later tell yourself you saved $100 off each item. but both items need to be purchased to get any of your money back.

also need to be sure you need to the 2nd item or already planned to buy it. otherwise this kind of deal is just another tactic to get a customer to return to the store and purchase something.

Sound better? According to who? I'd rather trust rtings reviews: https://www.rtings.com/speaker/tools/compare/jbl-boombox-3-v…

Here's something a little more comprehensive rather than some bot slapping together a bunch of out of context figures.
        https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wPpVFZF5asrQkNstI8n-Bjm0…

There's a TLDR at the top of it for people that like easy to read data analytics, but the entire document is worth reading with tested sources. Enjoy.

        • -1

Did you even read it (check out their individual reviews)? Rtings do complex reviews, they aren't a bot lol…

Besides, that Google doc is based on someone making opinions based on lossy recordings over Youtube so even if it was recorded correctly, compression alters the output quite a bit…

          • +1

@AreYouAWiiizard: "compression alters the output quite a bit…"

yes if anything negative I have heard a few times now about the Tribit is it cuts bass aggressively at the higher end of volume. the Blast does not achieve 5dB of louder max volume over the JBL without compromise.

          • @AreYouAWiiizard: just looked at the google doc and realized you are talking about the compression of the audio in those linked listening tests.
sorry I thought you meant a different type of compression, the one a speaker experiences when close to maximum volume which usually results in less dynamic range (loud and soft sounds are the same volume) and cutting of the deep bass to prevent the amp from clipping.

      • "Sound better?"

sounding better is really subjective. when the equivalent specs and design are so similar it really does just come down to the tuning which you can to an extent correct with EQ (in speaker app or 3rd party app).

personally I think Stormbox Blast does hold it's place as a "budget king" alternative. but at the same time I think it can be sold for cheaper in Australia than $270.
it regularly was sold on amazon US for $225 equivalent in australian dollars, and we are closer to china and have a lot of trade with them. so IMO the price here should really be equal to or less than.

        • Yeah, many speakers often have issues in specific ranges that can be fixed or at least made better by setting an EQ, don't know why I don't ever see tests done after tuning…

          • +1

@AreYouAWiiizard: I'm a bit excessive with EQ myself. I use parametric EQ that's available in the free onkyo HF player app which I use to play all my mp3s. if I have time I will screenshot and post an example of what my average correction looks like.
I use the KRK Audio Tools (another free app) to measure my speakers live in a specific location with uncorrelated pink noise.
then correct the frequency response to a downwards trending slope eliminating the major peaks and dips. it usually takes a few days because I have to measure, correct, measure, correct a few times to get it perfect.
I have gotten a lot better at it now so the first correction basically achieves the majority of issues. more recently I add a bit more bass extension by sacrificing max SPL because I listen indoors.
just what you get up to when you don't have much money but enough time I guess..

            • @harshbdmmaster718: Oh wow, that seems like a lot of effort. Then again I spent quite a lot of time trying get my Cloud II headset bearable when I first bought them. Their treble is so bad I honestly thought they were faulty since so many people were recommending them back then. If they weren't just $60 I would have returned them. It wasn't until I checked online that the hissing artifacts is normal because the mid treble is so bloody overemphasized… They don't sound terrible after messing with EQ but I'm looking for a replacement (preferably under $100) and all seem to have issues at that range that MAY be fixed with EQ settings but no-one seems to test what they are like after tuning.

  • I bought my Boombox 3 a couple of months before. Used at a family Christmas at the park just recently. I had on max volume most of the time. I couldn't belive it only lasted about 5 hours or so.
