I got a steam key a few months ago for less than $10, it's not an amazing game by any means, but I have played far worse. Worth a shot for free imo.

There are also 5 free cosmetic pack DLCs to claim:

      Thank you for sharing :)

    • +2

Legend. After all this time claiming Epic free games I never remember to check for DLC.

  • +12

This is the type of game you wait for Epic Freebie.

    • +2

Still waiting for Cyberpunk 2077…free Keanu!

  • +8

    this game sucks :)

  • +30

For old people like me: it's a 2022 reboot of Saints Row, not the 2006 original.

    • +7

I'd rather play the 2006 original. It's too bad they haven't re-released it on PC.

    • +4

Saints Row 2006 was an Xbox 360 exclusive. Saints Row 2 (2008) was also on PC, Linux. Xbox 360, One, X/S and PlayStation 3. They were what I consider the best in the series before they went in a completely over the top different direction with Saints Row 3 & 4.

      • +1

Xbox 360 emulation is pretty advanced these days, if you wanted to play on PC (while you own an original copy of the game, of course).

  • +2

No idea why they bothered to remake this game. Nice freebie though

    • Poor remake of a mediocre game.

    • +1

      gotta tick them ESG boxes

  • +2

I was always curious just how bad this game is. I think I'd feel sad playing it though, knowing it's a crappy imitation of the far better games that preceded it.

    • +1

It's nowhere near as bad as the internet would have you think. Not is it that good, really.

      • +2

To me the characters and humour seems to be trying to appeal to the exact people who have no interest in the SR series. The gameplay also looks janky and boring. Will check it out since it's free, just to see for myself.

    • -1

Can’t be any worse than SR4 where you are essentially invincible and move so fast you can outrun any cars. Fun for the first 5 minutes then gets old quickly.

Same problem with SR3 if you fill out the skill upgrades you become invincible to both bullets and explosions. If you don’t upgrade your health too much though SR3 can be challenging at points and a much more enjoyable game. Just remember to disable the vampire dlc as it replaces your melee attack with one that heals you.

  • +5

    I don't think I'll claim this one

  • +1

Here I was thinking this was going to be the original Saints Row game from 2006. Thinking there is no way they would give away the latest Saints row game (2022). Yet judging by the poor reviews, the only way is to give it away for free to increase the player base due to poor sales. Something I'd grab but only because it's free.

    • +6

Doesn't look like much embracing going on there.

This is the most blatant case of false advertising since my suit against the film 'The Neverending Story'.

In all seriousness, it's sad we lost the developer of Red Faction and Summoner.

      • Thats pretty terrible news. Im surprised Deep Silver is a part of this group… but with gearbox at top of the tree. Not surprised.

      • Volition was the developer of the Descent and Freespace games in the 1990s. Descent was the first FPS to feature entirely true-3D graphics, back in the days of Doom. Freespace and more notably Freespace 2 were incredibly good space combat games with great storylines, replayed for decades by fans.

        • +2

This game killed a great studio

        • +2

Oof! I forgot about Descent. Back in the day, I picked up Descent 2 at a Brashes closing down sale for $10 or so… great soundtrack and amazingly fun gameplay. I think I still have it in the cupboard somewhere but I have Overload for my true 360 degree FPS combat itches these days.

Wasn't a big Freespace fan… like most games, I prefer them to be more arcadey than a hardcore sim… so I was more a Freelancer fan. I'm hoping Haunted Space fills this void (no pun intended).

          • @Mugsy: I remember seeing Descent in one of those dinky electrical stores before JB and EB were everywhere. It was so amazing. That's when I realized what all the fuss over 3D was about.

            • @Cheap Gamer: My introduction to Descent was at a mate's place… I couldn't get my head around the controls. Wolfentstein/Doom controls were something I was still getting use to (I didn't have a PC yet… simpler times they were).

It's a pity we didn't have dual analog stick controllers as standard designs back then as Descent benefits from them tremendously. Mouse and Keyboard doesn't work as well. Alternatively, if Descent had a Freelance styled mouse control scheme (i.e. with the firing reticle moveable by mouse and moving it off centre also turns the ship in that direction), that would improve mouse controls for the game.

          • @Mugsy: I have Descent 1 and 2 on my modded switch (my copy of legitimate files pasted into a homebrew wrapper) and its works great, a blast to have it on the big screen again and portable too

  • Damn I was just saying a few days ago I wouldn't bite unless it was close to free.

  • I knew this would happen at some point.

Edit: The Halloween cosmetic pack is also free.

  • +1

    lol

    • +2

Don't know why people are negging you, I chuckled too. We all knew this day was coming when they'd start giving it away for free.

  • -1

Thank you OP. I have claimed it but I probs won’t play it since I watched all the reviews when it came out and it looked insufferable. However it was a big budget game from a legendary IP so I’m sure there’ll be value in it for some

  • I'd rather them release the original saints row instead of this

  • I thought this game was banned in Australia??

    • +1

It was, but the revision got approved. Drugs in video games get an instaban here.

An edited version was released lacking a mission involving "Alien Narcotics"

      • +1

Was this the new game or Saints Row 4? I know there was an alien narcotics mission in Saints Row 4 that caused it to get banned for a time.

        • +1

I thought it was the dildo bat. For sexual violence.

        • Doh! You're right. This one (SR5) wasn't banned. Too boring…

  • +1

Wouldn't play it if they paid me …

    • +1

But would you play it if it had an easy Platinum Trophy achievement?

Sadly, this was the reason I played that god aweful Terminator Salvation game back in the day. OK, that epic review of the game by Bajo and Junglist convinced my bro and I that we might have a fun time dissing on the game if we just played it through once on the hardest difficulty in co-op.

      • I'm not a trophy hunter. Do they give you anything like discounts or store credit?

If they don't, they should. Like a couple of bucks or something. Something to get players to buy more games.

  • Wish this was free on PS4 at the time too. I recently paid $19 for the PS4 version from Amazon. I know i actually paid for this game. But you very rarely see games given for free on Playstation.

  • When this came out, and got negative reviews, I still thought it looked pretty good, and thought I'd wait a year or so and pick it up for $15 or so on sale.

Never did grab it, so this is good. Might give it a bash once I'm done with BG3 (so, maybe 2025)

    • Maybe glad you didn't pay the $15 now that it's free. The only version of the game which i bought was on PS4. Only because you can't get it for free on that platform.

      • Pretty sure it was in the monthly games on PS+ a few months back, since I own it but definitely didnt buy it there

        • -1

Games from PS+ you don't actually own. It's tied to PS+ and to own the game you have to actually purchase it. It's essentially a PS+ free game rental so long as you keep an active PS+ subscription going.

          • -1

@hollykryten: You dont actually own any digital game if you want to get nitpicky.
