That’s interesting. I’d never go with these guys but my mother in law has done a few trip a deal tours and the latest was Vietnam. What you say sounds a lot like what she did in Vietnam too. Lots of subsidised travel to umbrella makers, art shops etc. She said she didn’t buy anything but it’s a waste of your time while on holidays. She said often their hotel was on the outskirts of a city. She paid for lots of upgrades and had some nice places to stay as a result.
They’re cheap. You get cheap as a result.
I did a G Adventures tour of China about ten years ago and loved it. Out of the way places, interesting areas and no subsidised stops to silk or tea shops etc.
