  • CSA aside what is everyone’s experience dealing with auntbetty OTA, how responsive they are?

    • If you need them to be responsive don't book with them. If you can buy your ticket and not do anything till you get on the plane then, and only then use a OTA.

      • True! Nowadays that includes most flights a month away. Involuntary schedule changes are very common..

  • How does china southern compare to china eastern? Are they same kind of quality/ experience? Just asking cause Eastern seems to have some similar price to Amsterdam in may/june

    • +3

China Southern are far better - I dont even send out deals on China Eastern, I dont rate them. For example, on Skytrax, China Eastern is listed as a 3 star airline and gets 5/10, while China Southern is 4 star and gets 8/10.

      • +2

China Eastern is fine. It's a company with stupid PR but flight experiences are more relevant to specific routes, seasons and aircraft. Having flown with them (PVG-SYD) several times recently (and codeshares with Qantas a bit earlier) I'd say post-COVID MU has consistently given me the best quality sleeps on the overnight leg from Shanghai to Sydney. The economy seats on an A359 are simply bigger and more comfortable than the ones on a B787 (unless the B787 is like the one generously configured by JL).

By the way, I've also spent a night on a packed NH880 on my latest journey and I was miserable, and that was with a five-star airline. On the other hand, all the Chinese airlines seem to struggle to get their cabin filled (partly due to all the CCP gibberish), which means better prices and extra legroom!

        Good deals though.

        • Thanks for the insights!

  • This is a bit off-topic but, I am going to China in a few weeks, apart from sorting out WeChat Pay, I will need to sort out some walking around cash. Do frequent visitors have any advice as to the best/cheapest way to convert AUD to CNY? TIA

    • +2

No walking around cash. WeChat pay and AliPay. Even beggers collects money via WeChat pay.

      • +1

Can you add ing card to we chat or Ali pay?

        • No idea - i loath giving away my details to CCP's big database of people. I have done…. Citi debit card to AliPay-it started to ask for things like passport and other card details which i was really hesitant to give up. So with WeChat pay i just find a Chinese friend and pay them AUD and they transfer me RMB.

        • +2

Yes you can but will need passport verification for both WeChat and Alipay iirc

All ATMs with the major banks (such as ICBC) charge nothing for foreign card withdrawal (unlike the daylight robbery in Europe) so if you have a card that waives the 3% bank fee (like ING) easy peasy. There is a limit of 3000CNY/day though.

Using walking around cash is the real hassle, but manageable. There are senior citizens with dumb phones, vision problems etc and big cities like Shanghai/Guangzhou are literally full of them. Vendors usually have some spare change because of this but without enough people spending cash (replenishing the changes) they tend to run out later during the day.

      Wise card on Alipay.
Thank me later. I never even touched chinese currency on a 2 week trip.

  • can any one suggest how to search a business class fare MEL to FRA early June 13 nights? Maybe they are already booked from CAN to FRA. I can only find Air India for $5646 and then Vietnam air for $6930.Any suggestions?
I can't sleep in Y anymore and it is just too exhausting. Thought China Southern may be a viable option but doesnt not even appear on the google flights page.
Thanks in advance for any clues. Joy

    • $5646 sounds pretty reasonable for J to Europe this coming summer, but its Air India. Even the $6900 isnt bad. This is going to be an expensive year for European summer (Olympics, Euro 2024, European airlines not back to full capacity yet, etc)

Look at Sri Lankan Airlines as well, they have some faires around $6.5k

    • In Google Flights, above where you input your cities there is a drop down where you can choose economy, business, etc

Be warned, China Southern now seems to have divided the economy fares into 3 categories. You WON’T get free overnight accommodation on the cheaper 2 categories. Check the cabin economy class against the terms and conditions of the free accommodation on their website before committing to the purchase.

    • I think you probably still can once youve landed, if you go to the transfer desk. Not guaranteed, of course

  • Why can't change the departure and return date on China Southern Airline website?
