Okay, these are not eneloops and I have more than enough eneloops thanks to Ozbargain (who doesn't at this point!).

I personally use these batteries for stuff that I dont change batteries in 2+ years on average and eneloops for other stuff. Even LSD NiMh batteries like eneloops have some self discharge rate - so, if you're almost never changing batteries in a device (or for badly designed/old products that cut off at 1.3v+), these could be the more sensible choice. But you do you!

Edit: I don't think 100mA+ discharge rate tests are meaningful when selecting an alkaline battery since you're better off with a LSD NiMh battery (unless your use case is something like a battery for your emergency torch/kit or a toy you'd hardly use). It's better to see discharge curves for under 10mA or even better - 1mA.

This is a very good comparison:

Evolta shows an exceptional voltage curve which is what you need when you're dealing with devices that cut off too early like old clocks, etc. For slow discharge devices, Evolta's capacity still fares very well for its price.

      Thanks for the info. Updated!
I remembered it being increased somewhere but thought $39 is the new free delivery threshold.

  • is it better than Kirkland batteries ?

    • Yes, I've found Kirkland tend to leak :( My Xbox controllers have been scared of them after a couple of them went rogue

I'm okay with paying a slight premium to Panasonic evotla because I've never had one leaking. Other brands have been a hit or a miss.

        • Unfortunately I've had a few Panasonic Evolta AA batteries leak - one that had been left flat in a device for a few months and other sitting flat in a plastic container for a few weeks waiting for recycling.

I would love a leak proof AA / AAA, even at a price premium. I bought Energizer Max from the Boxing Day Amazon deal, these state: "Even fully used AA and AAA sizes are designed to protect your devices from leakage - for up to 2 years". Hopefully it has some truth to it!

@BuuBox: That's unfortunate. To be fair they don't stress that they don't leak like much more expensive models - they just say it's leak resistant.

For me the leak gurantee upto 2 years isn't that useful because pretty much all the leaks I've had are after 1-2 years.

If you're willing to spend for better leak safety, I'd suggest lithium (like energizer ultimate lithium or whatever they call it now) batteries which have the advantage of even higher capacities and lifespans+shelf lives.

But once you reach that price point, NiMH LSD batteries also become a viable alternative for general use (unless you need the higher energy density and lifetime properties of lithium cells). They hardly ever leak.

            • @Schrodinger: Unfortunately I've had AAA LADDAs (earlier gen) leak so now only buy Eneloop

      • Are eneloops not good for xbox controllers?

        • +1

They are fine for xbox controllers

It’s because Kirkland are rebadged Duracell (Leakcell).

  • i was thinking about the boxing day deal for Duracell Ultra AAA, appox $0.77 per cell for a 20 pack but i didn't go through with it. guess it is worth the wait.

i also think Duracell is discontinuing its Ultra series and replacing it with "Optimum" now, at least for AA/AAA.

  • FYI: I recently learned that for most battery operated wall clocks it's best to use the old standard carbon zinc batteries and not alkalines.

  • Better off with Everready Gold

    • +2

according to the video, when discharging at 0.5A , Everready Gold dropped voltage pretty fast, almost too fast.

  • Officeworks do JBurrows AAA in a 40 pack for $16 (40c/ea) or 24 pack for $12 (50c ea), 5yr shelf life on the JBurrows but 10yr on the panasonics in OPs post.

more than enough eneloops thanks to Ozbargain (who doesn't at this point).

I'm a member since 2012 and I still don't have any eneloops. Just Ladda and Vartaaaaaa!
