Semi Synthetic for those want to know.

    • Yep, very important.

      • keem to know more please.

        Is fukl synthetic better.
        cheers

Yes. Better protection and hence more expensive for synthetic.

        • It isn't going to provide better 'protection' for the average driver at least with a thicker oil like 10w-40. It might last a bit longer before braking down if the oil isn't changed when it should (which might be earlier than the manual says). It will still get contaminated at the same speed as non-synthetic (from dirt, fuel and moisture). If you lived in a freezing climate then full synthetic 5w-40 could be beneficial, but 10w is rated for pretty cold climates.

Plenty of cars have never had synthetic and lasted 100's of 1000's of kms by changing the oil when it should be done and keeping the level where it should be.

Which now makes me wonder why my mechanic suggested it for my car aw i dont live in a cold climate.

He said it was more to do with my car having a small sump

Miss those Castrol Edge 5w-30 5L $35 deals.

    • with current wars and inflation, i believe there will be no more within that price.

    • The best was $25 delivered, not from SCA though.

Couple this with a chance to win 16ft Jayco Caravan and free fuel for a year if you spend $40 or more (ie. buy 2 of these) as I found out when I got an email saying I was in the draw. Ends 14 Jan 2024.

  • Nice one OP, I picked up this deal yesterday but forgot to post it. Free postage on a $30 order was a winner.

  • An Mechanics or other appropriate professionals here that can assist me wit a question here:

    My car states: use 5W-30
Car (10 years old) doesnt have oil leaks yet I burn through a decent amount of oil.
I live in QLD, and my mechanic told me that with our heat Id be better lff using 5W-40 instead.
In fact he suggested even using 10W instead.
He also suggested that it would help to keep the oil resevoir fuller to reduce the overall oil waste.
Stating that as my hatchback has a relatively small oil tank it can heat up quickly and quicker the less in the tank, and thus burn more oil than if I kept on top of keeping the oil tank at least 3/4 full constantly.

Wondering, if anyone who is qualified to answer thistype of question, can tell me if this is correct and worthy of considering.
    Cheers.

    • What car is it? Turbo? If turbo, you can try 5w-40. If non-turbo, 10w-40.

      • it is turbo which makes me wonder why he suggested the 10w-40

        cheers for this info btw.

All good. Sound like you have and Audi or VW. Anyways, just measure how much oil she is consuming now e.g. 1L per every x kms.
Audi/VW have an “acceptable” amount of oil that it consumes (ridiculous) but if it’s within the range you could keep as is but I would recommend going 5w-40 and doing the same thing to see if there is any improvement before going to 10w-40.

          • @pOint01: cheers again for the info.

already using the 5w-40, but will now consider trying the 10w-40.

            cheers.

  • Would this be good for a '03 Camry even though it says not suitable on the website? I was advised to use 10W-40 instead of 5W-30/40 for older cars as it is thicker and will lubricate the older parts better.

I got the same advise with my Aurion 09. I use 5-30, 10-30 or 10-40 whichever cheaper at the time and so far no problem

In my unqualified personal experience opinion your theory is sound. Thicker oils can be beneficial for older engines with worn parts and bigger tolerances. My old V8 clubsport (was only 10 years old at the time) had a lifter tick if I put the recommended 5w-30 in it. Once I put 10w-40 in it, that went away and I ran it on that weight for the following 5 years.

Likewise for a V6 ve Commodore I recently inherited it has a lifter tick. My parents have been putting in 5w-30 so I thought I would give this a go to shut it up. Already tried the lifter tick additive and helped a little. Of course not to attached to this car so I might be a little less caring.

Of course if your engine sounds worse once you put in 10w-40 go back to 5w-30.

Cheers, thank you for the feedback. Bought 2 of these.
