  • Cheers, got them last time and they good

Anyone else find they get this weird white etching in the plastic fairly quickly?

I don't put mind in the microwave so it's not due to overheating the plastic.

I'd hesitate buying these again because most of mine have got this white stuff on the inside of each container.

Mine also started doing this, would be keen to know what this is. We do put them in dishwasher, but our friends do this and they don’t get this

    • +1

I only use mine in the microwave and no issue with white stuff.

    • -2

Not exactly food safe it seems.

Plus the silicon seals encourage growth of mould when anything wet or moisture rich is placed inside.

Someone explained on the last deal, it's the result of heating sauce like bolognaise ect.

      • But I haven't actually heated with mine in the microwave. Only store cooled foods in them in the fridge.

    • +2

I've also found this and suspected the dishwasher was the cause, would like confirmation though. Maybe multiple things can cause the issue.

    • +2

Has happened to mine and I’m fairly sure the dishwasher is the culprit.

      • +1

Pretty pointless if they can't withstand the dishwasher. I might try a different brand as I refuse to handwash.

  • I haven't noticed any benefits to using these over take away containers. I'm interested to hear others thoughts.

    • -2

Takeaway containers are in some ways superior as their lack of a silicon seal will prevent mould.

      • Hmm, these claim to have an airtight seal - why does a silicon seal cause mould?

    • +1

Don’t take away containers leech heaps of EDC?

      • Did a bit of a dive into this. Takeaway food containers are made from unstressed polycarbonate plastics but I'm not sure what material these Decor containers are made from.

A study in 2014 purchased BPA-free products between 2010-2013 at retail stores (included baby bottles, reusable water bottles and food storage containers). The products were exposed to UV light, microwaving and autoclave treatment, and extracted using either a saline based solution, 100% ethanol, aqueous ethanol or distilled water at 40°C for 40 hours. The scientists found acrylic, polyethersulfone, polystyrene, and Tritan resins to leach chemicals with estrogenic activity; extracts from unstressed polycarbonate plastics did not show any estrogenic activity.

I'm no expert but my interpretation is that there's no clear benefit to using more expensive containers, I assume as long as you chuck them out once they become 'stressed' i.e. visible damage that they'd perform similarly for health.

    • I think the take away containers are NOT BPA free? And the experts reckon no way should you heat anything in BPA containers

  • Is it completely safe to use/microwave them ?

    • 100% safe lol

  • Interested if anyone has had any luck with these (or other containers) to keep out pantry months. Finding they can get through basically anything & hoping to find something with a real solid airtight seal to keep these annoying things out.

    • +1

I think you need to find where the moths are coming from first

    • Yes, airtight if you put un-infested food in and leave it fully sealed.
From experience the only effective approach is to
      1. go through everything in your pantry and throw anything that is suspected of being infested, and
      2. use pheromone traps until you stop catching moths.

  • It's a shame that there's no in between sizing

Want to do meal prep, however 375 is probably too small and 900 is huge!

Obviously, buying 20 glass containers is the next option but super expensive!

    • 600mm Decor glass are currently $5.

      • I think 400 or 500 would be perfect

These look good but they're really big, I think 18 to 20 of these would take up half my fridge or may not even fit in my freezer lol

Too many micro plastics, it's even in the name

    • you mean this particular model, brand … or plastic containers in general?

  • I have these for years, they're great.
To experiment, one set I put in the dishwasher (no lids, lids handwash).
Other set, only handwash. Going fine, no stains, good fit.
    I never microwave in them.

Lent a big one to a mate, she returned it with white stains, not sure how they got there, she said. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

  • Thanks. Bought 3 sets

    • One should do their own research but everything i've come across suggests especially heating food in plastic is bad. And that 'microwave safe' can simply mean the product wont melt in the microwave.
