Car Insurance Quote about Where The Car Is Parked Overnight

I have a garage, but I don't normally use it for parking my car because I actually use it as my workshop. If I answer 'garage' to the question of where my car is parked overnight, how likely my insurance be voided when making a claim?

how likely my insurance be voided when making a claim?

    Very.

Read the T&Cs when you sign up.

Why wouldn't you just be truthful ?

damn, had a quick read through that post, op did really leave everyone hanging. And seems like he/she never disclosed who the insurance company was as well.

      • +1

That absolutely did blue balls everyone on that thread.

How much is the price difference between garage & driveway/street?

    • +1

      probably negligible.

      • Id say its a bit more than negligible , ill call budget to find out

        • +2

For my last quote, there was zero difference…

I guess it depends on your location.

          • @jv: Just rang budget , 2020 caddy garage to street an extra $23.00 per fortnight.

Aye, aye, aye … if you tell them that the vehicle is normally garaged overnight and then is stolen from the street, they will likely investigate where the car is normally parked. If (when) evidence is found of improper disclosure, your policy can be voided/your claim declined. Then you're in all sorts of bother.

While everyone's looking to save a buck, this could come back to bite you big time if the cards don't fall in favour.

How can they investigate where a car is normally parked?

      • +3

Ask neighbours - not rocket science really.
That's why insurance claim investigator/assessors exist.

        Satellite imagery?

If you say garage and the garage is full of tools and workbenches then its probably obvious. Or if you dont actually have a garage

But, normally, no they cant. I have a garage but sometimes the car is parked on the street because its a rear garage and if 'someone' decides to park in the single lane driveway instead of the garage, then I cant access the garage and dont want to block in the other car. For most people its easy enough to say something like that.

Your suburb will have many houses with security cam. If a request is made through the police, it is easy to obtain footage which proves the car is never inside.

    • lol
police don't do claims adjusters work

      • What if the car is broken into or someone threw a molotov cocktail at it while it is parked on the street? It becomes a criminal case and while the police is investigating (which may take a couple of months), you make a claim to fix or pay out the car value. Insurance request police to assist in understanding circumstances. Found out that car was never in the garage even though insurance profile declared otherwise. This is a possible scenario.

Just be truthful, the premium isn't going to be that much of a difference.

Is there a driveway option? Not like a garage vs a carport/driveway will have $100s difference. Most like a few 10's of dollars.

If someone burn down your car while in the street, you are fuked.

does the question have the word "normally"? If yes, it's fine to answer "garage".
If not, it's also fine unless your car gets hit and run while parking on the street at night. LOL.

However, the best solution is to try both answers and see how much the difference is.

not true, if you don't tick garage, and it gets stolen out of your garage they probably wont pay

Get a free immobiliser from QLD
    adds a minute to theft.

  • It’s not worth the risk to lie on an insurance policy.

  • Pffft, "normally" is subjective.
