NBN FTTP 1000/50 Download Speed Drop Issues with More: Seeking Advice

Hey everyone! 👋

I recently upgraded to the NBN1000/50 tier with More and opted for the FTTP connection. After the activation, I noticed that my Wi-Fi speeds were consistently around 180mbps, which was a bit puzzling. Initially, I suspected it might be related to router issues or signal strength impacting on speed.

However, today around 5 PM, I decided to conduct a speed test by directly connecting my laptop to the NBN box via an Ethernet cable. Surprisingly, the download speed only reached around 300mbps, while the upload speed remained stable at approximately 47mbps. I ran the test multiple times, and the speeds were inconsistent, ranging from 200mbps to one instance hitting 400mbps.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Could this be a result of More not purchasing sufficient bandwidth from NBN? I'd appreciate any insights or advice on how to address this issue. Thanks in advance!

Update:
10:20PM Another test via the LAN port on the router: download speeds hovered around 550mbps
09:30AM Morning test via the LAN port on the router: download speeds hovered around 530mbps

  • Have you optimized your MTU and checked for packet loss?
Here's an easy guide to check and adjust the setting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK2PHpKI9M4

    • I bypassed the router and connected my laptop directly to the NBN box for a speed test to rule out potentially irrelevant factors. MTU is not one of the settings that can be configured in the NBN box, is it?

      • I've never tried that, but MTU can be easily changed on your laptop..which is in that video.

      • Did you make sure to use Cat5e cable? is your laptop capable of 1000Gbps connection? How are you testing it? just on speedtest.net? try using speedtest app https://www.speedtest.net/apps

        • Yes, I tried both Cat 5e and Cat6.

laptop capable: I checked the internet link speed(receive/transit) is at 1000mbps.

          • @rrrrrrein: Download the program on your laptop. Do the speeds get any better?

            What model is your laptop?

@Twix: Did another test using the app on the laptop and it was up to typical speeds. Can't tell the difference as it's now in typical time, will test again tomorrow morning and see if I can get close to 1000mbps.

          • @rrrrrrein: What were the results of the packet-loss test?

              • @rrrrrrein: I'm going to assume you found the sweet-spot with the MTU. Glad you have no loss!

                • @BoltThrower: I thought this was just because I connected my laptop directly to the NBN box via an ethernet cable, which resulted in no packet loss.

                • @BoltThrower: 0% packet loss on Wi-Fi

  • What did the RSP support say when you called them for help?

    • Asked for two more speed tests in the morning and afternoon. They tried to blame the root cause on my router, which I made it clear that I was testing directly on the NBN box

  • According to More, the maximum possible speeds under that plan is 350/42

    • No, this is a typical speed in the evening/night. Download speeds at other times should be 1000 mbps.

I'm on the same plan and getting the same speeds. It's probably shaped.

        • +1

That's pretty dodgy of them to do, as your screenshot shows it's not the typical evening speeds they're advertising but seems to be an actual hard limit.

Their pricing (even if you're a Commbank customer) isn't even that good on the 1000/50 plan either.

          • @Nousernamehere: agreed. staying for the 3 months free then dipping.

          • -1

@Nousernamehere: "Typical evening speed measurements are taken between 7-11pm
            may vary.
            NBN speed rating 1000/50
Maximum speeds for this plan are 350Mbps download and 42Mbps upload."

More's mixing up the description of TYPICAL SPEED with speeds at other times is very confusing, usually other isps can reach speeds up to 1000mbps during non-peek time periods, e.g. abb

Not really sure why you're bothering to defend a RSP who are very clearly saying that a plan's maximum speed is nowhere near what the advertised speed tier is.

This isn't some oversight by a technological inept user believing that, they know exactly what they're deliberately doing due to if people complain about it they say 'hey look, we've clearly said the maximum plan speed at any time is 350Mbps. It's a deliberate use of language, not a mistake.

    Change to a better provider.

I've been with More for close to 2 years now on the 250/25 plan.

      My current speed is 252.98/23.56

That is at the low end of what I usually get. In a couple of hours the download speed gets close to 270.

  • +5

You address this by changing to a good ISP, 350mbps peak hour speeds is a clear indication that more is a crappy subpar isp.
Also dont even bother trying to contact support, crappy isp means crappy useless support, change ISP, it's faster and easier than support too.

    • Tech support is useless

  • On wifi on tablet. Just tested 607/46 on same plan. But HFC connection, on pc via cable always get over 900down majority of the time.

    • This is bit exciting news.

Looks like More isn't confusing typical speed with maximum speed.

  • +1

It's a provider issue, typical of cheap RSPs to really push contention ratios :/

Cheap providers are really only good for 50/20 type plans where customers won't notice contention ratios as much …

More is just a Vocus retail reseller. A very low priority service but not terrible either. Those complaining of low speeds are likely to be using limiting hardware rather than the connection not performing. I never get less than 800mbps down on my More connection.

    • Limited hardware refers to? In case you are talking about new or old NBN box?

      ???

speed test by directly connecting my laptop to the NBN box via an Ethernet cable.

  • Make sure you try the speed test with different ethernet cable, especially 'short' a CAT6 cable.

    • I can see Link Speed (transmit) speeds of 1000mbps from the laptop's network settings when connected using a CAT6 cable or CAT5e cable, so it's not because of the cable.

      • Thanks for that. Well done. Just be mindful that Windows will just show the 'rated' capacity of the ethernet port. Just stick with the Ookla speedtest.

  • I have the issue before. But I found if I connect to 5G wifi, my speed was up to 700mbps for downloading.
