Garmin inReach Explorer+ $399 (Was $769) Shipped @ Garmin

610

Was looking for a satellite messenger and PLB and came across this. Would have probably preferred the mini 2 but this is a lot cheaper.

        • But not really any features that a smartphone doesn't,

Durability and battery life is a big thing. As I said, it depends on what the user is doing. There's no one solution that's perfect for everybody.

A SatSleeve also means you now have to charge two different things and make sure your phone screen doesn't get damaged. Not everyone is comfortable entrusting their personal safety to a literal piece of glass.

  • shh im trying to sell me mini haha

These inreach explorers work OK as a satellite communicator, but don't be fooled into thinking it will do the job of a garmin gps as well. It is a rebadged inreach, the only way to get tracks and waypoints on and off it is an awful web interface. If you don't need that functionality it is fine, but then the inreach mini will be much better for most. I've switched to that and think it is well worth the money for the smaller size and better battery life. Surprising how much you can do with the tiny screen if you need to as well, although it also links to a phone.

If you want the full garmin handheld gps functions as well you need something like the GPSMap66i looks similar but has the proper garmin stuff inside.

Those who contemplating to buy this device, you need to be aware of 3 things:

    1) it's an old superseded model
    2) uses DeLorme TOPO maps, other Garmin topo maps are NOT compatible with this device
    3) requires active Garmin subscription to use SOS functionality (!)

The intended use is for hikers and multi day hikers in remote areas. I bought mine for this and screen is good enough for basic maps with hiking trails on it which you can imported from various sources like all trails etc. It is good enough for you to know if you are off the intended trail.

I have extended the use of this from hiking to tracking a mostly solo trip around Oz and being able to communicate in remote places… like most of WA/NT. Peace of mind for yourself and family.

The plans can be suspend for a cost of about 50 a year. I used the intermediate plan (about 50/month) for my trip around oz over 3 months.

I bet OP never expected this deal post to generate so much activity. Congrats on a successful first deal post, OP! :)

  • Haven’t read all the comments but fwiw Zoleo is my go to for remote use - iridium access, the ability to sms and in app message - expensive sus ( min 3 months from memory) use iPhone to text - Garmin has the maps on screen but crazy small and texting from the Garmin is a pain - there is a new model hence the discount - the main feature of both is u can communicate with your rescuer team ( assuming ur capable)

  • Mine arrived today. Pretty happy with the price just founf out the s24 samsung hasnt got sat sos. Im srucj with the dat phone for another 12 months and this as backup
