    • Instructions unclear….

      "So, which one is your's"
      "Haven't decided yet" >_<

Sort of competes with using phone as a media player, but does reduce the issues of flat battery on mobile which is a pain vs flat battery on media player. which is just a nuisance.

    • +5

You can carry a smaller powerbank than this.

      • a smaller powerbank

True, I also only buy phones with a big 5-6000 mAH battery because I don't want to carry a charger.

    • +1

the market for super small portable ones is basically just for people that don't want to carry their phones but larger ones are usually for people who want high quality audio. I dont know this brand but my FIIO is noticeably better on good quality headphones. In saying that I rarely want good quality when i'm out and about and usually just want to sit and chill so…

All that quality is useless on Airpods so i dont get why they bother putting in BT

      • +1

Yea this, I imagine those that want these products are typically sitting in sound proof rooms or near silent places to actually tell the difference

  • +1

I thought mp3 media players were killed off in the first place due to the smart phones are capable of doing the same thing plus more. What's the main purpose for bringing back the old technology?

    • +2

People who buy into the whole "69 bit ess sabre dac with kaiber crystals for op amps"

    • +20

Sometimes it's nice to have a music player that cannot under any circumstances give you an alert from the internet.

    • +5

if you wasted money on good quality wired headphones like I did, you need a good quality DAC and AMP to be able to really benefit. What I dont really get these days is why people care what the quality is like when they're moving as the internal sounds you make would drown out the difference between this and your phone

    • +5

Because not everyone just wants to listen to Taylor Swift on Spotify on their Airpods. Plenty of people out there have uncompressed libraries of audio they want to throw on a device like this, plug in their wired headphones, and just listen to music. A device like this is easier than running a DAC into a phone.

I have no problem with your perspective but Tay Tay doesnt deserve your hate. Leave Tay Tay alone, Leave her Alone!

        • -3

I hope you managed to get some tickets to her concert.

FYI. Taylor Swift is coming to Sydney and performing on the 23/02/24 - 25/02/24.

          • +1

@huntingforbargainz: I'm actually not really into that brand of music or live act. I just think its high enough quality were it doesnt deserve hate.

      • +1

you say this like she hasn't worked with a couple of arguably the best producers in modern pop history

    • +3

Phones became shite for audio by losing 3.5mm and expandable storage.

For those of us that have pro headphones and not Bluetooth ones, and don't desire expensive mobile plans for extra data, new phones suck

      • Motorola has your back!

  • +1

Or just use your old phone for media duties.

  • +1

I'm trying not to buy this. As said, no one with a phone needs it, but the wheel, the simplicity, the look.

I think BT 4.0 will stay my hand,…

  • +2

I feel that this could be good for people who can't stay off their phones while at the gym

    • +2

Not sure it's water resistant though hey

  • +1

Is this a trend thing. Retro handheld consoles and now this.

    • +1

I'm a big fan of dedicated devices that do things well. I have a Gameboy style ROMs player, and good camera. And an iPad for media and doing stuff from the sofa. And a laptop for text entry.

A phone, even a $2k one, is a dinky little screen with a dinky little keyboard, average audio, ok camera and limited storage and limited power .

It is unbeatable on the move, but rarely the best tool, and it costs a lot.

      • +2

Apple sing the praises of the one device that does it all. Its how they justify charging so much.

But having multiple device more suited to a task is better in the event said device dies.

If you rely on your phone for you gaming, movie playing, productivity and photo taking. If this one phone dies for whatever reason. You just lost all in one go.

        • Yeah, by the time you sum up all the money spend with phone upgrades you could have bought a very good camera with replaceable batteries that don’t need upgrade every couple of year, plus a gaming console, a music player and a cheap mobile just to make and receive calls/text

  • Bugger. I pulled the trigger on this when it was $173.99 (with the $20 voucher taken off that amount) last week.

It's an ok unit. Feels strong, but the buttons feel a bit weak. Also, you cant create playlists on the unit, you have to click/drag on a PC, using their playlist app, then save the play list to the unit. Using the 2nd output in my car sound system, its loud and does very well!

256GB seems a little small storage to expand. This needs to support 1TB or 2TB microsd cards.

    • Yep, deal-breaker

    • -1

This device looks like it is a some old stock, so probably can read bigger cards.
The other potential deal breaker is micro-usb charge/sync port.

    • I have one and I can fit a lot just on one 256G card. I have one of those flat cardholders that will store 10 cards safely - more than enough to create playlists based on swapping a card over.

The sound is excellent and the response is fairly fast. I'm using wired headphones, a set of Sony MDR-7506. It helps if you've correctly named your music.

One slight problem is how long it takes to rotate through a decent sized music library, which is the main reason I use cards for playlists. It would also be nice to have a touchscreen for navigation, but that's something I'm willing to trade off for better sound reproduction.

      • You might find swapping cards a joy but not me. Also if it's all hi-res music in flac files, 256GB couldn't cut it in storage. Each to his own.

This is back as a lightning deal right now.
