Cooks the rice consistently, only issue with these is no water drain, so when you open the lid it pours down the back of the cooker.

    • +1

Where does the water go? Does it pool at the back of the cooker? Is there no drain water compartment to empty out?

      • +1

        Onto the benchtop.
        No drain in my one.

        • Damn, I'd prefer a Tiger or Zojirushi (Elephant) in that case!

          • +1

@Sleepycat3: How much is that water drain costing then?

            • +6

              @Flyerone: About 350

              • +3

                @BargainBogan99: …..wait…..

I has already told that damn lock ness monster! He says $350 i say son you must think i was born yesterday. $350?! I says $350? I give you $3.50 dang loch ness monster lookin for a fool well he ain't gonna be finding one today!

    • +11

I solved this problem. Before I open the lid I lift the rice cooker and tip it side to side with a little shake. It's just the water condensed under lid and falls back onto rice when you shake it before opening lid.

      • +1

I usually open the lid a crack and shake it, but sometimes I forget.

          • +4

@linkindan: How did you post that comment so quickly? I mean you must have written a letter and sent it auspost right?

          • +1

@linkindan: I'll let my entire family in China, Malaysia and Singapore know to throw away their rice cookers and go back to using a saucepan instead.

I don't expect it will be well received.

        • Good idea, I'll see I that improves my method.

      • +2

how dare you bring logic into ozbargainer angry arguments.

    • +7

      @Uncle Roger

    • +5

and people like you should just keep eating microwaved rice

    • -1

And I am sure your microwave cooks a great steak too….

  • Got one of these on clearance $30 12months ago does a real good job only thing is forget the instruction book it's totally useless with Chinese to English translation.

    • +6

Use water wash rice. Take rice put at bowl inside. Take cover close completely. Press cooking button. Rice is starting cook.

      • +1

Thanks we did figure it out after googling and has made perfect rice every time .

      • I see what you did there ;-)

  • +3

I have this aldi rice cooker. Bought about 2 years ago and still going strong. Makes perfect long grain and sushi rice everytime.

  • +1

Question, and sorry if it's been answered. But how is this better than say a kmart $14 rice cooker? https://www.kmart.com.au/product/7-cup-rice-cooker-42685456/

    • Hold 3 cups more.

    • The functions on this one cater for different types of rice or different meals you want to make with it.

    • +5

Kmart do sell the same aldi rice cooker. $65

I can confirm this kmart rice cooker is exactly same. I inspected it at kmart and I have the aldi rice cooker.

      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/rice-multi-cooker-43264940

      • They also sell a $14 model, it used to be $13. We worn one down and had to upgrade.

      • I bought this and my unit won't heat up at all. SO annoying, I threw out the packaging before trying it. Hoping Kmart will give a refund.

    • Secure closing lid or go home…

    • There's a $15 mini rice cooker at Kmart now if space is an issue. It cooks just 1.5 cups.
      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/15-cup-mini-rice-cooker-gre…

      • +1

That mini rice cooker looks like it would suit me. Would I be right in assuming this would make better rice than the packets of 90 second microwavable rice (like the black rice)?

    • Those work based on a temperature regulated switch. Extremely simple and effective mechanism. Technology connections did a video about it.
I don't know exactly how these electric ones work, though I'd assume they are partially based on pre programmed times, and not just water absorption.

  • +19

Does a digital rice cooker cook the rice a bit at a time?

    • +15

Nah, it cooks it in ones and zeros. The rice can also be encrypted if you want to eat in secrecy.

Also, it is either raw or cooked, never partially.

      • What is better? Fuzzy logic or AI?

      • If my rice is not cooked in hexadecimal. Im worried.

  • Since I started cooking rice like pasta I never went back. No need for more appliances.

    • +1

      No colander! Haiyaa

    • Cooking rice in a pot over a stove is perfectly respectable. Some folks swear by their cast iron cauldron over an open flame, some swear by elaborately steaming it with a pot inside another pot.

We don't talk about the ones that use a rubber sleeve in a microwave.

      • +1

Cooking rice should be a set and forget task. Wash rinse wash rinse add water press button.

Shouldn't need to stand by a stovetop just in case it boils over etc. Rice cookers are a godsend

  • +5

Got this. Normal mode cooks in about 1hr. Fast cook is 45-50mins. Regardless of how much rice is in the pot. The rice is better than stovetop cooking. Noticeably better. And yes you will notice it if you switch. Trust me, username checks out

    • +3

      15 minutes stovetop

  • How big is this device?
I have a pressure cooker i currently use, and would consider this so i can do rice and something in the pressure cooker…but 10 cups feels like a huge amount

  • My only issue with this is the steamer basket shrinks after one use lol

    • Also the rice grains fall trough the holes in the steamer basket.

  • I'm looking at a rice cooker but also thought I may get use out of a pressure cooker as well. Will this do a better job at cooking rice compared to one of the multi mode pressure cookers (such as Instant Pot or Panasonic) that also has a rice function?

  • Never had a rice cooker and got this 2 years ago because of the price. Can recommend, this is immensely good value for money and my rice turns out great. It will take an hour to cook. So much less stressful cooking in this when trying to cook multiple things at once

  • +6

I have this from Aldi, and a Cuckoo pressure rice cooker that speaks Korean.

The Aldi one costed $35 during clearance, and then the Cuckoo was at least 10x more (…easily actually, don't know the conversion but you can look up the premium Cuckoo rice cooker prices).

Hands down, the Cuckoo makes rice that I look forward to eating - probably something to do with pressure cooking. The rice comes out much 'better' - dont know how else to describe it - it makes rice cooking into some artform, I don't know. The inner pot thing feels very cheap and tinny in the Aldi one compared to the Cuckoo, which feels heavy and quality (and designed for induction) and the warm function - the Cuckoo's rice tastes fresh after many hours. Also takes 30 mins to cook rice, vs like an hour with the Aldi.

However the Aldi one is absolutely fine as well - it's just cooked rice in the end - and will be better on the wallet. I've become spoiled by the Cuckoo and much prefer that, but if I had to move back to the Aldi one for some reason, it'll be like switching from a Maybach to a MG? Thanks for reading - ram4ram.

    • Thanks I'll hold out for a good cuckoo deal and keep using the stove top til then 😆

      • Got a cuckoo from Costco, it changed my life!

    • probably something to do with pressure cooking.

More likely you have an Induction Heat model, that makes a huge difference. Pressure Cooking mode is Turbo on Cuckoo, it cooks quicker at the cost of quality.

  • Makes rice, be it basmati / sushi / jasmin rice, consistently.

Only downside is probably the time taken?

Definitely takes longer than more expensive rice cookers.

  • +10

Don't you guys think 1hr to cook rice is bit too long?
Especially when kmart cheaper can do it in 20 mins.

    • Exactly what I was about to ask? Lol.

  • +2

Bought 1 last time it was on sale. DoA. Quality control is not good. IMHO it's better spending your hard-earned money on a good brand rather than this. Just like hit and miss. The good thing is ALDI refunded my payment promptly no question asked. However I will not try my luck with another one. YMMV.

  • +1

Only problem with these rice cookers are, they dont drain the starch.

  • +4

I'm struggling with the "45min to 1hr" cooking time.

I'm used to washing my rice very well, then cooking 1 to 3 cups in a basic Kmart style cooker. If it's 1 or 2 cups, it'll take 20 to 30 mins, but not much longer than that.

If I buy this, will I really be waiting 1 hour to cook rice?!

    • Yes.

Apparently the slower you cook rice the better it is..

      • Apparently the slower you cook rice the better it is..

Yes and no. Induction Heat ones can cook quicker and have better quality because they heat all the rice more evenly rather than just having heat form the base.

  • +2

Curious , how these compar3 to tiger or ZOJIRUSHI

    • They both have multiple models, so this would be closer to whatever they have as entry level.

  • -2

Haha the price. Aldi you make me laugh.

  • I prefer analogue rice.

  • Do Aldi sell any good rice? Or better getting elsewhere?
Just asking in general, already have an awesome Cuckoo

    • +1

Preferred Aldi variety is the Basmati. Fluffs and seperates nicely in my (Panasonic) rice cooker.

One issue with Aldi cooker is default 5 minute steam function and a pain to change. Should be 10 minute default like others.

  • -1

we just use our pressure cooker.

  • Does anyone know where to buy replacement inner bowls for this? The non-stick coating on mine is starting to wear out.

  • -2

I dont eat enough rice for a appliance dedicated to it.
