Which Mattress Brand You Recommend? Help Buying One

Hey guys,

I am in desperate need of a new king single mattress. My budget is 700 - 1.3k.

I am so overwhelmed by the brands and models, all I know is that I want a medium firmness. Though it would be nice to go into a store and test.

I don't really trust the review articles cause I feel they are paid articles.

I am healthy, don't have any body issues but a cooler night sleep would be nice. I am 70kgs, 176cm so any mattress should be fine.

Do you guys have any recommendations of a brand and/or model? or maybe stores I can check out in Metro Sydney I can actually test different brands opposed to those bigger chains like sealy, ikea etc?

Have a Sealy, no complaints. But about to buy a new one (change over period) and am looking at Sleepeezee options (retail through Forty Winks and Amart).

Might also look at Yinahla and Comfort Sleep but in comes down to price and SA stockists.

  • +3

Just whatever the previous tenant abandoned whenever I move. Usually an Ikea pocket spring.

    • +5

How come Austrians don't sleep on Wenatex from Salzburg?

  • I found myself in the same position a few weeks ago and after much research, opted for the "Mattress Crafters" Boutique Mattress - Memory Foam and Pocket Spring.
I bought the double which was delivered for just over $500 (plus 8% cashback at Topcashback). It is advertised on their website as "Winner of Australia 2023 Best Budget Mattress in a Box Award" (although I am always sceptical about such claims).
Anyway, it arrived and I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of it. It is very deep and very comfortable, (medium to firm), so much so I now sleep on it instead of my own mattress (I had bought it for the spare room) and will buy another one for the spare room.

    • Is it hot in summers like memory foam ones do?

  • +10

Given that you're in Sydney, AusBeds are worth looking at.

    • +51

And the good thing about ausbeds is, you can change the firmness if it doesn't feel right, replace parts instead of buying a new mattress later, also the owner is an ozbargainer so they are easy to get into direct contact with (me)

      • +2

        Username checks out 100%

      • How much of the process is done by hand and how much is machine? I have an interview tomorrow at a mattress factory and they were telling me it's quite handcrafted

        • +2

It's a lot of hands on work.Of course we use sewing machines though. I have a double needle sewing machine as we make all the zippable covers on site. So I need that machine just to add the zipper. Then we use a tape edge machine to attach the top and bottom panel. We need to do this on site as it's extremely difficult to get it right. Every factory is different though depending on how they do things, and everyone seems to do things differently.

They all do varying amounts of work on site. Sealy probably do the most on site, while bed in a box companies are on the other end of the scale. They'll have them fully made in china / india, then compressed, boxed and sent in containers. These types of mattress would have the most amount of automation.

      • Can you tell me why your mattresses are recommended for people under 90kgs? What if you have a couple and one is over 100kg?

        • +4

I also have mattresses for over 90kg also.

You've touched on the most important aspect of my business, (and of mattresses in my opinion).

In my mattress business the responsibility is on me to get it right for you. So if it's not right, we drive out and change it until you are happy. And if you aren't happy, we refund.

It's for this reason we have become very accurate at predicting what the you will most likely find comfortable (and supportive) based on your bodyweight.

It's a very tricky thing, however we have developed a way.

Most of not all mattress companies use the foam on top to adjust the firmness.

We have found adjusting the foams works, kinda, but we have found that something else works much, much better.

I now have 4 different spring tensions. I have a whole page that explains it in detail, just google "ausbeds springs".

Basically, the lighter you are, the softer the spring and vice versa. So when someone wants to change the mattress feel, we go straight for the heart of the mattress, we drive out and completely change the springs. We are essentially reducing the wire in your mattress by 0.1mm in order to make the adjustment.

That 0.1mm of wire adjustment is the most meaningful change you can make to a mattress in my experience. To achieve the balance of comfort and support this is where the adjustment is best made.

The whole business is centred on this one principal. I make the mattress covers and mattresses on site, not because I wanted to be an Australian manufacturer. Its because I wanted to solve this mattress problem. And the only way I could see to solve it was to give people the ability to change the spring tension in their mattress.

          • +4

@Karl from ausbeds: And to answer the second part of your question, if say somebody is 60kg, and some is 120kg, then the person at 120kg will require a stronger spring to stop them sinking too much

The 60kg person will need a softer spring so they sink in enough.

We have 2 ways of dealing with this,

            1. Through layering (free).

            2. I literally cut whole springs in half and join them for people. It's a difficult process, and it's expensive, but I'm the only one in Australia that is able to do this.

Most of the time this isn't necessary, it's usually just for extreme cases.

Also, the weight guides on the website are not strict, just guidelines, some light people like firmer springs and some heavier people like softer springs. But there is a definite pattern of what we notice say 80% of people end up sticking with.

          • +1

@Karl from ausbeds: Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me. Are we better to go to Marrickville to pick our mattress?

  • Blessed Earth.

    • How long have you had your mattress for? We're looking into getting Blessed Earth but quite hesitant about spending a few k's on a bed we can't test.

      • +1

I have a Natural Bedding Company latex/wool mattress since about 2008. Still in as new condition, although I rotate or flip it every two weeks.

If I needed a new one, I would go with Blessed Earth because they don't have the latex core, just wool, plus they are a fair bit cheaper now than the NBC.

  • +10

I went through this recently. My tip - ignore all the online reviews. It comes down to your preference in what feels comfortable to you. So go out and lay on lots of beds and see what you like.

I checked out all these foam beds that people rave about and I actually didnt like it at all. Ended up going with the more traditional Sealey Mattress. The foam beds were too grabby for me.

    • +2

      too grabby for me.

Hmmm. Reminds me of my ex girlfriend.

      • heyyyoooooo!……

  • I have a sleeping duck queen and we had to change it to be 'less firm' which they just sent out the toppers for which was good.

I have found that the bed retains a lot of heat though. If it's a hot day then the bed will release the heat overnight and you'll be clammy. SOmething to bear in mind with these sorts of mattress in a box, it's a common complaint.

  • +4

I think that asking someone for their opinion of the comfort level of a mattress is next to useless. But if you want an objective measure of how hard/soft it really is and how it wears compared to other mattresses go to the library and look at CHOICE mattress reviews.

    • +1

IMO, Choice has dropped the ball with the mattress reviews.

A lot of complaints for their top recommendation. Yet interesting enough a lot of user love for Sleepy Duck.

      • As someone who has tried Emma, Sleeping Duck & Koala mattresses, I agree completely, Choice's reviews were rubbish. Emma mattresses are overpriced, cheap, and not worth it when compared to Sleeping Duck. The Sleeping Duck mattresses are much more comfortable, plush and high end. We tried the top two Emma mattresses, and both were cheap, small and lightweight in comparison.

I have no idea how Choice rated them, but they got it very, very wrong.

        • Cheers. Ended going up Eva myself. Was a coin flip between them and Sleepy Duck.
Eva slightly won me over because it already comes with different firm layers to rotate between.

Interesting enough my Koala from 7 years ago, which is a simple non-spring model, is holding up really quite well. No sag.

I've read Koala moved their manufacturing from Aus to China, with a drop in quality (or this could be some subtle racism with anything not made in a western country isn't good enough)

Either way curious to see if I notice this to be better or same same

        • And yeah, their vacuum cleaner recommendations has not lined up with users/community experience either.

I might eventually unsub from them which is disappointing as I generally appreciate their mission.

  • +1

I’ve found BedBuyer review site helpful for comparing mattresses. They claim to be sleep scientists, Physio’s and chiropractors and just do reviews with links and deals.

    • -1

Looks like a great website & appears the reviews are truely genuine & independent.
They seem very open in their disclaimer, but they do receive commission from links:
      https://bedbuyer.com.au/disclaimer-and-disclosure/
"Bedbuyer has affiliate relationships with many mattress companies where Bedbuyer receives a small percentage of a sale when our readers click through links on our site."
"These relationships are always arranged after the review process, so we can assure our readers that these relationships have no influence on the content of our reviews."

It looks like their 2023 awards will be announced tomorrow (retail category) & 3rd Feb (mattress in a box category)

      • +1

Do you think their commissions will affect the awards ?

        • Possibly, but unlike other sites at least they've got the same dude with the physical mattress, so less likely to be BS

So many sites just have quotes about the bed, some random rating, etc.

I hate how he calls himself a Dr and a chiropractor as well. They should never be in the same sentence.

      • Their reviews like everyone’s are really general. Looks like they’re just giving reviews to whoever can sell the most beds there for giving them the most revenue. Are chiropractors even considered real health professionals?

All these sites love to give awards to online companies as that is pretty much the only way they can use the pixels or cookies to capture the affiliate link commission.

The endless returns on these things is also ridiculous.

Stay clear from the garbage sold on eBay tbh.

Sleeping duck seems to be the most loved by far.

    • +2

Don't trust anything you read there, the site generates income via commission from the linked/reviewed mattress sales.

      • -2

Don't trust anything you read anywhere because someone is making money from something

  • +3

Most of the mattress in a box companies offer free trials

  • +3

I bought the most exxy Ikea mattress you can get, it was only like $1,000 and is awesome

  • +4

I am so overwhelmed by the brands and models

Just go into a store and try a few mattress and decide what you like. Most stores negotiate on price and you would get to know about the availability of stocks as well. Not all mattress would be on stock and could have a long wait time.

The poll list contains many stores like Fotry Winks, Snooze etc which stock multiple brands. They are not exactly mattress brands.

  • +5

I've been thinking of sleeping duck…..

  • I'd say you have to go and try out as many as you can…and even then it can still go wrong. Spent about $2K on an AH beard one about 5 years ago. Has gone a lot softer over time and not very impressed. Also need to note what bed base/frame you too.

    • +1

I have a AH Beard myself. Mine developed a slope leaning towards the middle after 6 months. Manufacturer has been helpful in not being helpful.

      • Actually mine got really soft on the edges - too soft and AH beard came around one day, picked up the mattress, supplied a temporary one while our one was being "re-sprung". Pretty good customer service!

Had the guy from the factory ring me and say they've had a few with 'defective springs' that sag prematurely. Anyways, got them replaced and was good for maybe 1 year and now we find it a bit too soft. Was excellent service, but you can change the firmness of the mattress afterwards :/

  • +1

tried a bunch, couldn't really tell the difference between the $3000 sealy and the $1000 art and science platinum. bought the art and science, took like a month to break in, but its good now.

do not buy a foam mattress in a box they suck

    • dont forget you can get spring mattresses in a box

  • +1

I personally sleep on Prince mattress(company based in Auburn NSW), if you prefer a mattress which is firm then you can consider it as well.

    • +1

Firm asian mattresses are the best. I got mine from a shop that doubled as a Chinese table tennis school. I think either hurstville or auburn.

  • +7

EVA, the most comfortable matress ive ever used.

  • my family always uses Kymdan Natural Latex Mattress, they now distribute in Australia https://www.kymdan.com.au/en/
the mattresses that my family has have lasted for over 20 years and still going strong. I love sleeping on latex mattress, it has great support and is still soft

    • Can vouch for latex in terms of support but it's bit too warm for summer.. just have to deal with it somehow

      • yeah for summer we need to use some special cover sheet

        • Which product do you use to cool the latex mattress during summer?

          • +1

@OzFrugie: I use polyester sheet for summer and lately i discover a product called “cooling latex cover sheet” to put on top

            • @anhtram222: Where do you buy them? Any particular brand/model you recommend?

              • @OzFrugie: I actually bought the covers when i was in vietnam for holiday. Not sure how to buy online. Sorry mate

    • Is that the one in Footscray lol

      • Yeah i think it is the address in Vic

  • +4

    Hey guys!

Thank you so much for your replies, it really helped me starting my mattress journey as I am overwhelmed and uneducated with choices.

I just want to buy one and hopefully its a match so I dont have to go and return or whatever return policy they have.

1 - I will go to Snooze and see sealy and other brands and test them out
2 - I will go to AusBeds test them out
3 - I will avoid any mattresses in a box, those weren't in my buying processs anyways
4 - Based on votes now, Sleeping Duck and Sleep Republic seems to look good if I do end up buying online
5 - I have ignored online reviews as mattresses are subjective
6 - I have thought of Ikea but TBH I am not an Ikea fan but I will look on last scenario.

    • +3

I've been sleeping on an IKEA mattress for last 6-7 years. Just as every other IKEA product, you get the value for money. I have no complaints.

      • Likewise, I am extremely happy with our Ikea mattress going on 7 years now.

        • We're on an IKEA spring one as well and it's fine. The only thing I'd say is you feel every movement your partner makes, even notice the cat jumping up on the mattress at night. It doesn't bother me but I know it's a deal-breaker for some people. It sleeps cooler than the garbage Koala it replaced though, I'll say that much. Never again with the foam bed-in-a-box

          • @danwylie: I wonder what one you have, ours is pocket sprung and we don't have any issues like that.. in fact it was better than the Sealy we had prior in terms of stability and isolation :)

            • +1

@REDRUM: Looks like it was the Hamarvik. It's been discontinued by the looks of it. Not a pocket spring, hence the partner disturbance. It was extremely cheap, I think originally we just wanted a cheap replacement for the Koala while we looked at a "proper" mattress. But we're basically happy with it, so it stayed. We'd be pretty likely to replace it with another nicer IKEA when the time comes

      • Stopped using Ikea Box Spring ones. They were sagging quickly.

    • Don't eschew the mattresses in a box, with their free trials, it's a great way of trying the mattress. We're on our second Sleeping Duck mattress now, due to a size upgrade, and they are on par with the $5,000+ mattresses I've had previously

It's too hard to choose a mattress by lying on them for a few minutes in a store

  • +4

We have king koil matresses - one is plush and one is medium - both are like sleeping on a cloud. They're also getting quite old too and still amazing

    • +1

King Koil medium here also. Still going strong after 13 years.

  • have had a bed in the box from aldi for 18months and no complaints.

  • -4

Koala's are the best I have ever bought, but I like a firm mattress.

    Anything with springs is trash.

  • +1

I just removed the bed and mattress from my room, was making me really lazy and giving back problems. Switched to sleeping on floor, bought a $74 rug from local rug shop, best decision of my life, helps with back problems and you stretch your legs everytime you get up lol good for body and also good if you are into meditation or yoga

    • Wow

    • Are you serious?

    • Hardcore minimalist 🫡

  • IKEA mattress, they actually honour the returns policy as well. I thought the cheapest one would be fine but after a few months it felt too firm so I took it back and got the next softest one with pocket springs and it's been great for 6 years so far.

    • +1

How did you put it back? Once unrolled, its damn difficult.

      • To return it fit into the back of my car with the seats down and squashed up against the front seats and roof.

      • We returned one ikea box spring matress with a goget van in Sydney, because it was sagging. They gave us funny looks, but did accept it. Unfortunately, the new one was sagging quickly as well.

    • Unless Ikea changed their return policy, it is only to exchange for another mattress (and store credit if cheaper). And if you need to send it back they charge for delivery.

You are much better trying sleep republic or similar first who have a proper money back promise before trying ikea.

We have a sleep republic and highly recommend it.

      • how's the price difference?

  • +9

What happened to that brand of mattress that was really popular on OzBargain for a while? They used to have sales maybe every month or so. I used them for a while and really enjoyed it.

Just checked my email, "Zzz Atelier Black Label" is the brand/model

    • +6

I have this one and it's the best!

    • +4

Did a Ctrl+F for this when I didn't see it in the poll. What in the hell? I still really like my Zzz Atelier king mattress. It's a few years old now and it hasn't disappointed.

    • +2

Very happy with our Atelier Black Label

      ebay has 99.9% positive feedback

    • Got one of these and figured at its price, even if it lasts a couple of years, could just easily get another. Been about 6 years now, and its still going strong. Its awesome!

    • I wonder if they will be part of the next Ebay 20% off sale (as they have done a while back)?

    • Haven't seen any deals with them for a while. Been waiting for one to pop up, considering buy a mattress from them.

  • I spent quite a lot on Sealy mattress. It was so worth it!

Don't go cheap on your sleep that's all I'm saying!

I got this for reference (King): https://www.snooze.com.au/products/sealy-posturepedic-exquis…

  • +1

They might be cheap but the Giselle mattress' are great quality. Can be bought from myDeal and Catch for between $150-$250 depending on what specific mattress you're after, I haven't noticed any difference between these one's or a mattress that costs $1000-$2000. I've gotten a single, double and king sized ones so far and none have had any problems over the past 5 years with them.

    • +1

      Can second this.

    • The Gisselle look very similar to the Zzz Atelier mentioned above - any idea if they are the same?
I wonder if there are any retailers stocking these types of mattresses.

  • +1

King Koil …. not sure why not in options….. excellent

  • +1

    Love my Ecosa mattress

  • I bought a Cloud 9 Visco Flex mattress back in 2021 from Chiropedic and it is still really comfortable (the mattress is really thick/tall so fitted sheets sometimes don't fully cover the sides). They're pretty pricey at the moment but if they do a Spend & Save sale like when I purchased mine, you could possibly get a mattress, base, protector and sheets for under $2500. *I believe the mattress has been renamed to Yinahla now
Edit- Just re-read your post and saw your budget, this is over however my price noted was to do with me getting a King mattress etc. not a single…

  • Any ebay pocket spring boxed mattress. Min thickness 30cm. The thicker the mattress the better - more materials you get. Cheap and good.

    • -1

The thicker, the more material is there for sagging…

  • Go to few mattress outlet stores around your place. I ended up finding a factory outlet near Ikea that was much better quality and cheaper.
