Which Mattress Brand You Recommend? Help Buying One

Hey guys,

I am in desperate need of a new king single mattress. My budget is 700 - 1.3k.

I am so overwhelmed by the brands and models, all I know is that I want a medium firmness. Though it would be nice to go into a store and test.

I don't really trust the review articles cause I feel they are paid articles.

I am healthy, don't have any body issues but a cooler night sleep would be nice. I am 70kgs, 176cm so any mattress should be fine.

Do you guys have any recommendations of a brand and/or model? or maybe stores I can check out in Metro Sydney I can actually test different brands opposed to those bigger chains like sealy, ikea etc?

  • Picked Sealy without thinking, but actually the best I've had are Australian made King Koil.

    Update guys

I found the mattress, and I am happy that I didn't purchase online and got it in-store.

I went to Snooze, Beds n Dreams, Forty Winks, Ikea, AusBeds and others that I can't think of now. I am so so so tired.

But the crazy thing is that, I went to Snooze first, tried out a Sealy first and I was very impressed with it on my body and just what I was looking for in firmness (medium) and comfortness.

Then I went to other retailers all day and I hated most of the beds, I kept thinking about the first Sealy mattress I tried, no other mattresses matched it for me. Not even the lux $2k+ mattresses, most of the time it was an instant no, either me sitting on it or getting into my normal sleep position.

Then I went back to Snooze and 99.99% sure it was my mattress. Then I went to Beds n Dreams for a final look and there was a similar mattress (forgot which brand) similar to the Sealy one I wanted. Thank jebus Snooze and Beds n Dreams were on the same floor, I went back and forth trying both mattresses as they were similar. At the end, Sealy won.

I tried so many mattresses, feels like I left my DNA everywhere. And the crazy thing is, the mattress i bought was the very first mattress I tried. Funny that.

thanks for the update but be careful when you say

      I left my DNA everywhere.

      it could be misintepreted ;)

    • The Sealy is a nice mattress. I bought one in the medium as well. Very happy with it.

I read all this fuss about pocket springs and didnt like it at all. And the foam I wasnt a fan either.

  • Which mattress specifically did you go for?

    • 'Sealy Posturepedic Elite Pillowtop Mattress - King Single / Medium'

At the moment I am sleeping on a 'WHITEHAVEN Manly Low Profile, Medium'. This mattress is ok but it was a hand me down from my brother when he moved overseas 7+ years ago. Just never occured to me to buy a new mattress until a few weeks ago and seeing how I can better myself in sleep and getting comfort for me.

I moved here from the UK 22 years ago and brought my Ikea Euro King Bed (1.8x1.8m) assuming a mattress would be available in a metric country. Err, NO. My mistake!

That led on to a mattress quest which ended up with a new bed frame as no one would sell a Euro-sized mattress at a sane price.

I concluded so long ago that Aussies are being ripped for a mattress, so many sales, so many discounts etc. It's all marketing BS.

Unless you have a REAL need for something special just buy from Ikea.

Personally, we use a cheap King Aldi bed frame, albeit with 18mm ply replacing the (crap) supports and a matching Aldi King Mattress (the one in a box, circa 6/7 years ago?). It's fine, does the job, no back issues and I'm 60 now and weigh 120Kg but am 1.88M so not too bad.

The biggest issue to us sleeping is heat so we have a small inverter reverse cycle A/C unit in the bedroom set to 18C. Uses very little power, almost silent and just helps with sleep far more than any mattress…

Check out this Deep Dream mattress. I recently got a firm one from there and it's very good for the price you pay(400-500$). Been Sleeping well with these and has all the features of most "In the box" mattresses near 1000$ range.

  • Sealy FTW!

  • Hopefully your Sealy survives better than mine has, started to sag after 6 months. I'm not that heavy (~90kg).

    • Got mine in 2013, still good but looking to replace it.

    • Yep, same boat, got mine in 2018. About to bin it.

  • Koala is the best I've ever slept on. But I did buy about 4 years ago. I heard - but never researched to verify - they changed production methods or something related which has caused the more recent supply to be pretty average. Can't speak to that, but the one me and the partner have been using for the last few years has been fantastic.

I have 3 the Koala, Sealy and Sleeping duck. In order ranked.

    1. Sleeping duck feels the most robust and best quality, real springs, great edge support, but it is very HEAVY! to change bed sheets, sleeps the best, I like firm.
    2. Sealy, lots of options, light and proper springs, made in Australia, best to go medium-firm.
    3. Koala top of the line, saggy floppy mess, no real springs, no edge support, but is comfy towards the middle, easy to change bedsheets as it is lighter. Better for kids, is priceyā€¦

You also need a decent bed frame, as it is just important. Ecosa have good options.

Let me know if you want more detail on any three.

  • We have king Koil… been very good, hasnt lost its shape in years

  • I like my tempur a lot šŸ¤·

Koala not as good anymore, Ive got one from years ago and another one a year ago and no where near as good.

Bought a sleep republic king size recently and its the best mattress ive ever used. Very heavy though

Definitely Ausbeds, service and product is top notch. You can do some small tweaks to firmness as well for minor adjustments (slightly softer, or slightly firmer), or if you need to change it more they will come out within the first 100 days.

Thanks for recommending my business, much appreciated! :)

  • I got sleep republic king size close to a year ago. it gets a bit warm, great in cold weather, keeps you cozy, not so much in summer. It is also on the firmer side, If you like that soft/sunk feeling then it is not for you.

No complains about quality, still flat as the day we got it, no sink holes, probably thanks to the high springs counts compared to others.

The box is extra heavy, if you are planning to put it in ground floor, then no issues. If there are stairs involved, then prepare to push your physical limits along with someone else.

Good luck on your mattress journey

Has anyone heard of or tried 'Origin' mattresses?
    https://originmattress.com.au/
Their youtube ad now keeps showing up on my phone and apparently they are backed by former Olympian 'Ryan Gregson'?

Still using the great value Zzz Atelier King mattress from eBay a few years back

  • Was in the same boat and didn't want to spend shitloads on mattress. Went to Amazon and bought this in a double - was the best mattress I've had. Same as +$1000 mattress but only $300 at the time.

I bought 2 single zinus mattresses for spare beds and will continue buying them. Their frames are also dirt cheap and great quality.

I got a Noa one back about ~2 years ago, and no complaints, I think it's great.

I remember looking at a bunch of mattress in a box companies and a bunch didn't have real springs - absolute scam IMO, so I ended up going with Noa.

The worst are the koala mattress ones where their ads are jumping next to the wine glass - the hell does that have to do with comfort. I would never buy a mattress without springs

    • +1

'jumping next to the wine glass - the hell does that have to do with comfort'

pocket springs allow that - it's about partner disturbance - we had a Sleepmaker Miracoil mattress for about 20 years which was wonderfully comfortable but the Miracoil spring system was not pocket springs but some interlocking weave, so every time I moved, tossed, or turned in bed, as I do many times a night (I'm a side sleeper and turn regularly, milady tends to sleep flat on her hack and rarely move), this would elicit loud complaints from milady who would be woken and disturbed every time I moved even just a little - jiggle, jiggle !

with our replacement pocket spring QS mattress, I can walk across it and she will continue snoring (not shouting at me!) - that's peace of mind for BOTH of us !!!

  • When we bought our Sealy the bloke said to get one with a base as lasts longer.

Its been awesome for 10+ years, now in the market again but the missus wants to get one that we can flip…

Anyone know which is best ?

Choice magazine recommends Breeze brand out of the mattress-in-a-box options.
BreezeĀ® Premium Firm Pocket Spring Mattress
We just got some for the kids. The firm I've tried sleeping on, and it's good but is quite firm. I'd probably recommend the medium.

in Sydney we bought from Mr Yawns Mattress Factory in Alexandria - https://maps.app.goo.gl/sxEfKDqBcZBiMz3g7 - a one-person small shop dealing direct with the business owner - we got a double-sided pocket spring queen-size mattress for $1100 nine years ago in 2014 that we turn every two weeks for extended life (did you know pillow-top never-need-to-turn one-sided mattresses are a scam designed to sell more mattresses so what used to last 20 years is now expected to replace every 3-5 years?)

He told me he got mattresses made to order in small batches in Melbourne like ours, but last I looked he was starting to push Chinese-made rolled-up pocket-spring mattresses in a box (convenient, heavier than you might expect, but cheap thin coil wire for short life) so I'd beware of those.

Tip - he's a top salesman and will listen to offers, but beware of mentioning any price as he will then lock you into that price - so only if/when you're ready to buy, make the first price you offer a significantly lower one than you're willing to pay, so you can bargain up as he'll never come down !
