For those that are sick of the plastic office chair mat protectors and want to try something different.

Tempered glass chair mats are normally pretty expensive but this one seems quite reasonable. Not many reviews as it may be a new product offering.

Purchased one recently and had for a few days with no issues yet but early days…

the slightest tap on that corner and you'll find a million pieces of glass on your floor

Am I missing something, or does tempered glass seem like the worst possible material to be sitting a chair on top of?

    • +14

I dunno… I'd trade my asbestos chair mat for the tempered glass one any day.

      • +3

Tempered glass can melt when everything's on fire though (this-is-fine.jpg)

  • +7

I just imagine the crunching of grit and crumbs as I roll around in my office chair

  • +1

I see these recommended alot…….but my anxiety just wont allow it

  • +5

Or you could change the wheels to carpet wheels???

        • +5

Umm, my comment had nothing to do with glass. Try reading again?

          • -8

@PainToad: Your comment doesn't actually state what "iT" is your referring to.

            • +4

@natcoso9955: See how it's in a thread under another comment? That means it's in relation to the other comment, ie. "it" is 'carpet wheels'.

            • @natcoso9955: His response is in reply to a carpet wheel comment, he should possibly have used 'they/them' pronouns for the wheels, but his argument was clear champ.

              • -1

                @geekboy: That was my thought.

                it = the glass mat
                they = the carpet wheels

                • +2

@natcoso9955: I guess my brain was more thinking "it" being the "usage of the chair with carpet wheels" if we want to get technical ;)

      • No matter how flat you make that pancake, it still has another side.

    From the listing …

Safety Information: In the event of accidental shattering caused by external force, we strongly advise discontinuing its use immediately to prevent any potential injuries. Your safety is our utmost priority.

    • +3

      oh that's a good idea!

  • i bought a balance board for my standup desk… but it feels a bit slow / easy on the carpet, even with a plastic mat on top, still feels a bit sticky… ngl, am tempted to pull the trigger on something like this.

    Is it April 1 somewhere?

  • +2

    Good deal for baby elephants…

    • What about fully grown toads?

  • This cannot end well

  • +8

Says it can withstand 454KG? Very limited market here at OZB :(

    • +1

No way. I've been busy taking those free Gamer Supps.

  • Can't wait till they start making tempered glass cars, cause edgy.

    • Pfff tempered glass athletic cups is where it's at.

      • Can't wait to try them out, then there is the tempered glass slipper, cause everyone wants to be Cinderella.

        • How about tempered glass condoms? That will help prevent the world population increasing unnecessarily.

  • +11

Save on bulky packaging. Send your warranty claim back in a bag LOL

  • Yeah Laminated seems like a better solution. Or my chamfered edge MDF solution. I've been using it for 8 months now and no damage to it at all.

  • +2

I prefer some resistance when i sit on an office chair. I don't want a slightest weight shift to cause me to roll around. Can't even stand chairs on floorboards, a chair on super smooth surface would be pain.

    • +8

      Achoooo! <wheeeeeeee>

      • This made me so happy just reading this hahaha

I've been using pool fence glass panels from bunnings for the past 3 years, been good so far, only downside is, its a but heavy and does slowly slide over the course of several month and you would have to reposition.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/architects-choice-1200-x-1100-x-…

    • Do small movements have you moving too much as in with no friction, the chair just slides around too easily?

      • +1

It basically feels like you're rolling your chair on a tiled floor, i don't have an issue with that, it does obviously slides more but I usually have to apply force to move the chair, it wont move by itself when im sitting on it or anything.

Oh also, the glass is pretty thick, I have this irrational fear of hitting my toes one day, its never happened, might get some insulation tape to on the edges one day, of course if the glass was thinner my fear would be the glass shattering and cutting me.

        • Thanks mate, might go with it instead of the thinner one.

  • +1

Another similar product with more reviews. Seems reviews are high but they do shatter ever so often and when they do, its a hell of a lot of work to clean up.

    • +3

I love the "I dropped a hole saw on it and it broke" review. I mean, I can understand people objecting to it breaking in normal use, but you'd expect people to exercise at least a bit of caution.

  • Any recommendations for half-decent chair mats for carpets that aren't tempered glass that don't crack in under a year?

    • Plywood; MDF may work; thick carpet segment/mat should handle the rolling well enough to prevent stretching in the main carpet. This may suit a hardcore ozbargainer: https://www.bunnings.com.au/standard-carpets-500-x-500mm-alf…

    • +1

Yeah I have one made from something like 12mm MDF.
Edges have been chamfered to minimise the toe stubbing factor and the surface painted with Primer but nothing further than that, I was too lazy to do any more.

It's approx 8 months old and showing no signs of damage as yet.

I got one of these mats from "Dikilong" on sale for $118, has been good https://amzn.asia/d/4VIUcTS

      • Sorry my "dikisntlong" enough to qualify for this

    • The recent trend has been to get a pack of floating floorboards

      • Feels like they'd constantly break apart, I guess you could glue them though.

      • Has anyone ever tried this? If not glue, perhaps duct tape will do the trick?

        • +1

Yeah, glue or duct tape would definitely work! The posts I saw built a picture style frame around it to hold everything in place, but thats a lot more work.

      • I finally tried this. I bought the thickest one I can find with rubberised underlay. I put them on top of my carpeted floor and it's working well so far after a week or so.

Not entirely sure it's the exact same one, but I got one of these around 2015 and it's still holding up

  • +1

This must be the most stupid and non-practical thing I’ve seen in my life.

    • hits blunt *

"guys you know what we should do - make the most ridiculous parody of a product possible and pretend it's real, and see how many people still try to buy it"

"Haha… what about a dangerous exploding chair mat.. made out of glass that could possibly kill the user"

    "Dude you're too high"

  • +2

I just got some clear garage floor epoxy and gave the carpet a couple of coats. No more chair dents and I can mop it clean.

How do they ship these? AusPost usually deliver items via dropkick or shotput, after they've kicked it out of the van onto the road. Can't imagine these faring well in transit.

  • +1

Perfect for Magneto's Prison. Just need a clear chair too.

  • I can see myself picking up all the small pieces of the broken glass within the first few days. If I managed to shatter the tempered glass on my phone, without a doubt shattering tempered glass chair mat is challenge without losing.

  • I'm going to give it a go. Wish me luck
